Buying and using balms

Using a balm on an animal without poisoning it, and the oils that cause real harm

Assume every gram gets licked off. Tea tree, pennyroyal and wintergreen poisonings are documented, and cats are far less able to clear these compounds.

A balm applied to an animal is a balm the animal eats. That single fact rearranges the whole question: dermal tolerance stops being the test, the safety margin shrinks with body weight, and several materials that are unremarkable on a human forearm have killed pets. This page covers what the veterinary toxicology literature actually documents, which bases are defensible, and the situations where reaching for a balm delays a diagnosis.

Short answer

Assume complete ingestion. Use plain refined butters, food oils, beeswax or petrolatum, and nothing else. No essential oils at all, and never tea tree, pennyroyal, wintergreen, eucalyptus or citrus oils, which have published poisoning case series in dogs and cats. Cats are the extreme case because they glucuronidate phenols poorly. A 1 percent essential oil dose is around 18 times higher per kilogram on a 4 kg cat than on an adult.

The relevant test is oral, not dermal

Dogs and cats groom. A cat spends a substantial fraction of its waking hours doing it, and a dog presented with something greasy on its feet will work at it until it is gone. Some of an applied balm rubs off on flooring and bedding, but the working assumption for choosing ingredients has to be that the entire dose is swallowed within a few hours. In a multi animal household it may be swallowed by a different animal than the one it was applied to, which is how cats end up exposed to products bought for dogs.

Once you accept that, the arithmetic does the arguing. A generous paw application is 1 to 2 g of balm across eight pads. At 1 percent essential oil, a level that is conservative in a human product, 2 g of balm carries 20 mg of essential oil.

Ingested dose per kilogram of body weight from 2 g of a balm containing 1 percent essential oil, assuming the animal grooms all of it off. Body weights are typical rather than measured, and the point is the ratio, not any single figure.

The last column is the reason pet balms are formulated differently rather than simply diluted. A cat receives an oral dose per kilogram roughly seven times what the same balm delivers to a large dog, from a species whose liver is least equipped to deal with it. And unlike the dermal route, oral exposure delivers everything to the portal circulation and the liver.

Why cats are a different animal, chemically

Cats have a well characterised gap in phase II drug metabolism. They express very little functional UDP-glucuronosyltransferase of the UGT1A6 family, the enzyme group that conjugates phenolic compounds with glucuronic acid so they can be excreted. In the domestic cat the relevant gene is a pseudogene, carrying mutations that prevent a working enzyme being made. This is not a quirk of sensitivity; it is a missing pathway, and it is the reason paracetamol is lethal to cats at doses a dog tolerates.

Essential oils are largely phenols, phenolic ethers, monoterpenes and monoterpene alcohols. Those are exactly the substrates that pathway handles. Blocked, the compounds are cleared far more slowly by other routes, so repeated or sustained exposure accumulates rather than washing out between doses. Cats also have limited capacity to protect haemoglobin from oxidative damage, which is why they form Heinz bodies readily, and their haemoglobin is unusually susceptible to begin with.

Three consequences follow for anyone with a cat in the house. Exposure does not require application to the cat: the cat grooms the dog, walks across treated flooring and lies where a balm was rubbed in. Small repeated doses are more dangerous than they look, because the assumption that yesterday's dose has gone does not hold. And a cat that appears fine for several hours may still be developing signs, since the published series report onset over hours rather than minutes.

The oils with documented poisonings

These are not theoretical concerns extrapolated from rodent data. They are case series and case reports in dogs and cats.

Careful

A striking feature of the tea tree series is that most exposures were deliberate: owners applying the neat oil as a flea remedy or a skin treatment. The dose that causes harm is not an accident with a bottle, it is a normal sized application of a product marketed as gentle and natural. If an animal has been exposed and shows drooling, wobbliness, tremors, vomiting or unusual sleepiness, contact a vet or an animal poison service immediately and take the product with you.

The human side dilution arithmetic, and the reason those percentages do not scale down to animals, is at essential oils in balms. For anything an animal will wear, the correct percentage is zero, and that includes peppermint oil in a paw product and the cooling actives covered in menthol, camphor and other actives. There is no pad or nose benefit on offer to trade against it.

Zinc oxide creams eaten off the skin

Human nappy creams are the commonest thing people reach for when a dog's nose or belly looks sore, and they are one of the more frequent calls to animal poison services. Dogs eat the tub as well as the residue.

The reliable outcome is gastrointestinal: vomiting, sometimes persistent, and diarrhoea, from ingested zinc oxide paste. That is unpleasant rather than catastrophic in most cases. The more serious presentation, zinc toxicosis with haemolytic anaemia, jaundice and haemoglobinuria, is well documented in dogs but overwhelmingly from swallowed metallic zinc: galvanised hardware, nuts and washers, and pre-1983 United States one cent coins, which are around 97.5 percent zinc and dissolve in stomach acid over days. Large or repeated ingestion of zinc oxide preparations has been implicated in zinc toxicosis, but the dose relationship is not the same, and it would be overstating the evidence to say a lick of nappy cream causes haemolysis.

The practical conclusion is unchanged. Zinc oxide brings vomiting, a regulated drug active and a white paste that shows every lick, in exchange for a barrier that plain fats provide without any of it. Leave it out of anything an animal will groom, with the single exception discussed below, where a vet has recommended it for sun exposed pink skin and the animal can be prevented from licking.

The human product problem: xylitol, flavour and everything else on the label

Using a human lip balm on a dog's nose is common and is a poor substitute for a reason that has nothing to do with the fats. It is the rest of the list.

Xylitol. Dogs absorb xylitol rapidly and it triggers a substantial insulin release that a human pancreas does not produce. Hypoglycaemia follows within roughly 30 to 60 minutes at doses around 0.1 g per kilogram, and acute hepatic necrosis has been reported above roughly 0.5 g per kilogram. Xylitol appears in some lip balms, toothpastes and sugar free products as a sweetener. A smear is unlikely to reach those doses; a chewed tube is a different matter, and the realistic exposure with a dog is the whole container.

Flavour and sweeteners generally. Anything that makes a product palatable makes an animal eat more of it, faster, and encourages licking of an area you were trying to protect. The category is covered at lip balm flavour and sweeteners, and none of it has a place here.

Actives borrowed from human products. Salicylic acid, urea keratolytics, menthol, camphor, capsaicin and sunscreen filters all appear in human foot and lip products. Each is a drug active, an irritant, or both, and each was assessed on the assumption that it stays outside a human body. The bases that cause the fewest problems

What is left after all that is a very short list, and it is sufficient.

  • Beeswax. Indigestible, inert in the quantities involved, and the structurant of choice for a film that has to survive a walk. Composition and grades are at beeswax. Filtered cosmetic grade carries less propolis, which is the fraction associated with contact reactions.
  • Refined plant butters and food oils. Shea, cocoa, coconut, olive, sunflower. These are foods. The failure mode of eating too much is loose stools, and in a dog with a history of pancreatitis a fatty ingestion is worth avoiding, which argues for thin application rather than a different fat. Shea butter refined rather than unrefined keeps the odour down, which reduces interest in licking.
  • Petrolatum. Not absorbed, not metabolised, and used in veterinary practice for exactly this reason. Its properties are covered at petrolatum and mineral oil. Large ingested volumes act as a laxative and can produce oily leakage, so thin films only.
  • A tocopherol antioxidant at 0.05 to 0.2 percent, which is there to stop the oils going rancid rather than to do anything for the animal.

Two ingredients need a number rather than a yes or no. Castor oil adds useful cling and is a stimulant laxative through ricinoleic acid, so keep it low, in the region of 5 to 6 percent, rather than using it as a main emollient. And coconut oil is liquid above about 25 C, so a coconut heavy balm becomes a puddle in a warm room and transfers to everything the animal touches.

Note

Do not push petrolatum or oils into an animal's nostrils. Mineral oils and other liquid fats aspirated into the lung cause exogenous lipoid pneumonia, which is documented in humans and reported in animals, and the risk is highest in brachycephalic breeds and in any animal that struggles during handling. Balm goes on the outer surface of the nose leather, not inside it, and never as a treatment for a blocked nose.

What a balm is genuinely for

Four applications hold up, and all of them are conditioning rather than treating.

Paw pads in winter. De-icing salts are sodium, calcium or magnesium chloride. They abrade mechanically as crystals, they are hygroscopic so they draw water out of the pad and out of any split, and calcium chloride releases heat as it dissolves. A wax film fills the fissures and interdigital spaces and repels brine for the length of a walk. It is a modest effect and it does not replace the step that matters most, which is rinsing and drying the feet afterwards, especially between the toes. A formula built around lickable ingredients is at paw balm, and the human parallel with heel skin is at foot and heel balm.

Nasal hyperkeratosis. Some dogs, particularly certain breeds and older animals, accumulate thick keratin on the nose leather that cracks. Occlusion softens the keratin and reduces splitting, which is a real if temporary benefit. Idiopathic nasal hyperkeratosis is a diagnosis of exclusion, so this is only reasonable once a vet has said that is what it is. A softer formulation for thin skin, rather than a walking wax, is at dog nose and elbow balm.

Elbow calluses. Pressure points on large dogs thicken and can fissure. A balm softens the surface. What changes the outcome is the bedding: a callus is a response to lying on a hard floor and it returns as long as the floor does.

Pink noses in the sun. White faced horses, and dogs and cats with unpigmented noses, sunburn and are at raised risk of squamous cell carcinoma at those sites. Physical zinc oxide pastes and fly masks are both used by horse owners for this, generally on veterinary advice. A homemade balm cannot carry a sun protection factor: an SPF is a measured result from a specified human test protocol, not a property you can infer from an ingredient list, as explained at SPF in lip balm. Shade, timing and physical covers are what actually reduce the exposure.

What a balm cannot do, stated plainly

A wax and oil film is a few micrometres thick. It has no thermal mass, so it provides no protection against hot tarmac in summer, and any product implying otherwise is selling a dangerous idea. Test the surface with the back of your hand for seven seconds instead; if you cannot hold it there, neither can the dog. It is not an antiseptic, it does not close a wound, and applied over an infected or foreign body affected paw it hides the problem while the problem progresses. It does not stop a dog licking; a dog that licks one foot persistently is telling you something, and covering the foot in something palatable makes it worse. Winter skin reasoning that does transfer between species is at cold weather skin.

If you sell one: grooming aid, or veterinary medicine

The regulatory position surprises people because a pet balm is not a cosmetic anywhere. The definition of a cosmetic in the US Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act at 21 U.S.C. 321(i) applies to products for the human body, and Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 in the EU and its retained UK equivalent are written the same way. So the cosmetic rules that govern a human balm simply do not reach an animal product.

What fills the gap depends on the claim. In the United States, the FDA compliance policy guide on animal grooming aids treats products intended only to clean or improve appearance as grooming aids outside its normal drug controls, and treats the same product as an unapproved new animal drug once it is offered for a therapeutic purpose or to affect structure or function. In the United Kingdom the Veterinary Medicines Regulations 2013 do the equivalent work, with the Veterinary Medicines Directorate assessing borderline products on their presentation and claims. General product safety and consumer protection law applies regardless.

In practice the wording decides it. Conditions, moisturises, protects against grit and salt, softens rough pads: those describe appearance and physical protection. Heals cracked pads, treats hyperkeratosis, antibacterial, antifungal, repels fleas, relieves pain: those are medicinal claims, and a flea repellency claim in particular puts a product straight into veterinary medicine territory. Where a vet replaces a balm, and the decision rule

Stop applying anything and get the animal seen for swelling between the toes or a discharging lump there, which suggests interdigital furunculosis and usually needs prescription treatment; for persistent licking or chewing of one site, which points at pain, allergy, a foreign body or a behavioural cause; for crusting, ulceration, depigmentation or loss of the normal cobblestone texture of the nose, which raise immune mediated diseases such as discoid lupus erythematosus and pemphigus foliaceus; for lameness, bleeding, heat or odour; and for pad thickening in an animal that is unwell in any other way, since footpad changes appear in several systemic diseases.

The rule that covers the rest is short. If the problem is dryness, roughness or abrasion on healthy skin, a plain balm made of food fats and wax is a reasonable and low risk thing to use, applied thinly and no more than once or twice a day. If the problem has a shape, a smell, a discharge, a limp or a behaviour attached to it, a balm is the wrong tool and applying one costs you time. Is tea tree oil safe for dogs?

No. A poison control database series covering 2002 to 2012 reported 443 dog and cat exposures to 100 percent tea tree oil, with ataxia, tremors, paresis, hypersalivation and central nervous system depression beginning within hours and lasting up to three days. Most exposures were deliberate applications by owners. Diluted or not, it does not belong in a product an animal will groom off.

Why are cats more sensitive to essential oils than dogs?

Cats express very little functional UGT1A6, the enzyme family that conjugates phenolic compounds with glucuronic acid for excretion, because the gene is a pseudogene in the domestic cat. Essential oils are largely phenols and monoterpenes, exactly those substrates, so clearance is slow and repeated exposure accumulates. The same gap explains why paracetamol is lethal to cats at doses dogs tolerate.

Can I use my own lip balm or hand balm on my dog's nose?

It is a poor substitute. The fats are usually harmless, but human products carry flavours, sweeteners including xylitol, menthol, camphor, salicylates, sunscreen filters and essential oils, all assessed on the assumption they stay outside a body. Xylitol causes hypoglycaemia in dogs at around 0.1 g per kilogram and liver injury at higher doses, and a dog is likely to eat the whole tube.

Is zinc oxide nappy cream dangerous if my dog licks it?

Usually it causes vomiting and diarrhoea rather than anything worse, and that is common enough to be a frequent call to animal poison services. Severe zinc toxicosis with haemolytic anaemia is documented in dogs but mostly from swallowed metallic zinc such as galvanised hardware or older coins. Zinc oxide brings no benefit a plain fat does not, so leave it out.

What ingredients make a paw balm safe to lick?

Food fats and food grade wax, and nothing else. Refined shea, cocoa butter, coconut, olive or sunflower oil, beeswax as the structurant, a low percentage of castor oil for cling, and a tocopherol antioxidant at 0.05 to 0.2 percent. Petrolatum is also inert and acceptable. No essential oils, no zinc oxide, no menthol or camphor, no flavour.

Does paw balm protect a dog from hot pavement?

No. A balm film is a few micrometres of wax and oil with no thermal mass and no insulating value, and any claim otherwise is unsafe. Walk early or late, stay on grass and shade, and place the back of your hand flat on the surface for seven seconds. If you cannot hold it there, the dog should not walk on it. Boots are the only physical protection.
