Castor oil in lip balm: gloss, cling and the sticky ceiling
Why ricinoleic acid makes castor oil the best source of shine and cling in lip products, what percentage to use, and where the sticky ceiling sits.
Castor oil is the one liquid in a lip balm that you cannot swap for something else without losing a property. Everything else in the oil phase has a substitute with a similar feel and a similar job. Castor does something no other common plant oil does, and the reason sits on a single carbon atom.
The plant is Ricinus communis, INCI Ricinus communis seed oil, grown mainly in India, Brazil and China. The oil is cold pressed or expeller pressed from the seed and then refined.
Castor oil is 85 to 90% ricinoleic acid, which carries a hydroxyl group in the middle of its chain. That group makes the oil unusually viscous, polar and adhesive, which is why it produces gloss, cling and clean pigment dispersion in lip products. Use 5 to 15% of the formula; above about 25% it turns tacky.
The hydroxyl group, and everything it explains
Ricinoleic acid is 12-hydroxy-9-cis-octadecenoic acid: an ordinary C18:1 chain, the same backbone as oleic acid, with an -OH group attached at carbon 12. That single addition explains, without any hand-waving, every distinctive property castor has.

That last row is the one that catches people out. Castor is so polar for an oil that it is not perfectly compatible with everything else in an oil phase. In a wax-structured balm this does not show, because the wax network holds everything in place, but in a soft or liquid gloss it can appear as slow separation.
Why it is the best lip ingredient for shine
Shine is a physical result, not a claim. A surface looks glossy when it reflects light specularly, in one direction, rather than scattering it diffusely. That needs a film that is optically smooth, continuous over the whole surface, thick enough not to break up, and of a refractive index different enough from the substrate to reflect at all.
Thin, low-viscosity oils fail on continuity: they spread until the film is patchy over lip texture, and the lip's own ridges scatter light. Butters and waxes fail on smoothness: they set as microcrystalline solids that scatter. Castor holds a thick, unbroken layer that flows into the texture of the lip and stays there. Nothing else in the plant oil world does this as well, which is why castor has been the backbone of lipstick and lip gloss for a century.
Two supporting materials help. Small amounts of a fine-crystal wax such as rice bran wax improve gloss on setting rather than dulling it, which is discussed in waxes compared. The sticky ceiling: how much is too much
The relationship between castor percentage and lip feel is not linear. Gloss climbs quickly and then plateaus. Tack climbs slowly and then accelerates. The two curves cross somewhere between 15 and 25% of the total formula, and that crossing point is the practical limit.

Worked example at the 10% target, for a 100 g batch of tube balm: 15 g beeswax, 20 g shea butter, 10 g castor oil, 30 g jojoba, 25 g high-oleic sunflower. Weight percent of the total, totalling 100. Judge tack on the lip, not on the back of the hand. Skin and lip vermilion feel castor very differently, and a formula that seems fine on your wrist can be unpleasantly sticky in use. Press your lips together twice: if they resist separating, you are over the ceiling.
What castor does to flavour
Castor has a mild but distinct taste of its own, faintly bitter with a soapy edge, and it does two things to a flavoured balm. It contributes that background note directly, which becomes noticeable somewhere above 15%. And because it clings, whatever flavour you added stays in contact with the taste receptors for longer, so both the flavour and the base note are amplified in duration.
In practice that means a high-castor balm needs either a slightly higher flavour load or a flavour chosen to sit over the base, and it means sweeteners behave differently: a sweetener that reads as pleasant at 5% castor can read as cloying at 20% because it lingers. Pigment wetting, and why tinted balms need castor
To colour a balm you have to displace the air trapped on the surface of every pigment particle and keep the particles separated. If the oil does not wet the pigment, the particles stay clumped, and the colour looks weak, streaky and grainy no matter how much you add. Iron oxides and micas have polar surfaces, so a polar oil wets them and a non-polar one does not.
The standard method is to make a pigment paste: grind the pigment into a small amount of castor oil until it is uniform, then add that paste to the melted base. Ten to twenty percent castor on the oil phase, used this way, will get more colour out of less pigment than double the pigment dispersed carelessly into a non-polar oil. The ricin question, answered plainly
Castor seeds contain ricin, a toxic protein, and this is not disputed. Ricin is water soluble and protein based. It partitions into the aqueous fraction and the solid mash during pressing, not into the oil, and the heat applied during commercial processing denatures any residue that carries over. Cosmetic and pharmaceutical grade castor oil does not contain functional ricin. It has been used orally as a stimulant laxative for a very long time and appears in national pharmacopoeias on that basis.
The other seed constituent, ricinoleic acid itself, is the laxative agent and is not a toxin. Applied topically at balm levels it does nothing systemic. The two words look alike and are constantly confused: ricin is the protein toxin, ricinoleic acid is the fatty acid, and they are unrelated chemically.
Buy cosmetic or pharmaceutical grade castor oil from a supplier who will provide a specification. Do not press your own from seed, and keep castor beans, which are sometimes sold as ornamental plant seed, away from children and pets. The intact seed is genuinely dangerous; the refined oil is not.
Hydrogenated castor oil and castor wax
Hydrogenating castor oil saturates the double bond of ricinoleic acid, converting it to 12-hydroxystearic acid. The kink disappears, the molecules pack, and the liquid becomes a hard, brittle white wax melting around 82 to 88 C. Two things follow. First, castor wax is a structurant, useful at 1 to 5% to firm a balm and to reduce sweating, because the retained hydroxyl groups help hold liquid oil in the crystal network. Second, it has no gloss function at all: the property you wanted from castor is destroyed by the hydrogenation.

The last one is worth understanding even if you never use it. Because the hydroxyl group provides a site for ethoxylation, castor is the starting material for a whole family of water-soluble derivatives. That is why a cleansing balm designed to rinse off often contains a castor derivative: it is the same molecule, given a water-loving tail. It is not a natural ingredient and should not be presented as one.
Where castor does not belong
Leave it out, or keep it under 3%, when the product is a matt or barrier-style balm, when it goes on a large area of body skin where tack is unwelcome, when it is a paw or nappy balm that will be licked or rubbed against fabric, and when the formula is already draggy. Castor cannot fix drag: a balm that pulls on application usually has too much carnauba, stearic acid or hard butter, and the diagnosis is in drag and poor glide.
It also has a two-year shelf life, which is respectable but well short of jojoba. In a formula built for maximum longevity, castor is the component that sets the limit, so keep it at the low end of its window if the product has to survive a long retail cycle.
What to do next
Make three identical balms at 5, 10 and 15% castor, wait a day, and try them on the lip rather than the hand. How much castor oil should be in a lip balm?
Five to fifteen percent of the total formula is the comfortable window. Five percent gives noticeable shine, ten percent gives shine plus cling, and fifteen percent is about as far as you can go before some users call it tacky. Above roughly 25% it feels sticky on the lip and starts to affect the taste.
Does castor oil contain ricin?
No. Ricin is a water-soluble protein that stays in the pressed seed mash, and the heat treatment used in commercial processing denatures whatever traces carry over. Pharmaceutical and cosmetic grade castor oil is a well-characterised material with a long history of oral use as a laxative. The oil itself is not toxic in this way.
Why does castor oil make lips shiny?
Shine is a smooth, continuous, high-refractive-index film that reflects light rather than scattering it. Castor is viscous enough to stay thick instead of breaking into patches, and polar enough (because of the hydroxyl group on ricinoleic acid) to wet the lip surface and cling to it. Most other plant oils are too thin, too non-polar, or both.
What makes castor oil different from other oils?
Ricinoleic acid, 85 to 90% of its fatty acids, carries a hydroxyl group at carbon 12. No other common oil has this. The hydroxyl allows hydrogen bonding between molecules, which raises viscosity roughly fifteenfold over a comparable oil, raises polarity, and makes castor miscible with alcohol. Can I use castor oil as the whole oil phase?
You can, and some lip glosses are close to that, but for a stick balm it is a mistake. At 40% or more of a formula it is tacky, it collects on the lip rather than spreading, it makes flavours read as slightly bitter, and its two-year shelf life is shorter than a jojoba-based blend. Use it as a functional 5 to 15%.
What is castor wax?
Castor wax is hydrogenated castor oil, a hard white wax melting around 82 to 88 C. Hydrogenating the double bond of ricinoleic acid to give 12-hydroxystearic acid removes the kink, so the molecules pack into a crystal. It is a structurant and an anti-sweating agent, used at 1 to 5%, and it has none of the liquid oil's gloss.
Is castor oil good for chapped lips?
It is a good occlusive and it clings well, so it stays where you put it, which is most of what a lip product can do. It does not heal anything. Its value on damaged lips is that a film with cling survives talking, eating and lip-licking better than a film without it, so the barrier stays covered for longer.
