Definitions and basics
- What actually makes something a balm?
- No water. A balm is a blend of waxes, hard fats and liquid oils where the wax network sets everything solid. Because there is no water, it needs no emulsifier and no preservative. Full answer: what is a balm.
- Balm, salve, ointment, cream: what is the difference?
- Water content is the only firm line. Balms, salves and ointments are anhydrous; creams and lotions are emulsions. Everything else is convention, and the words are used loosely even in the trade. See the full comparison.
- Does a balm actually moisturise?
- Not in the sense of adding water. It slows water leaving the skin and supplies lipids the surface can use. That is genuinely useful, and it is a different mechanism from what the word implies. See moisturisers and the skin barrier.
- What do occlusive, emollient and humectant mean?
- An occlusive slows water loss, an emollient smooths the surface, a humectant attracts water. Balms are overwhelmingly the first two, and humectants are the hard part in an anhydrous system. See the three classes explained.
Making a balm
- How much wax do I need?
- Ten to eighteen percent for a lip tube, seven to twelve for a lip tin, five to twelve for a body balm, eight to fifteen for a poured salve. The wax ratio calculator adjusts for your wax, butters and climate.
- Is the 1:1:1 wax to butter to oil rule any good?
- Not really. By weight it is 33% wax, and measured in spoons about 24.5%. Both are far above what published lip balm formulas use. See lip balm ratios.
- What temperature should I pour at?
- Lip tubes at 65 to 72 C, tins at 60 to 68 C. Too hot gives sunken centres and cracked tops, too cool gives lumps and poor fill. See pour temperatures.
- How many lip balms does 100 g make?
- About twenty standard 4.25 g tubes before losses, or eighteen after. The batch calculator handles any container.
- Can I substitute candelilla for beeswax one for one?
- Start at 0.6 to 1.0 times the beeswax weight, then test. Published measurements disagree by a factor of two depending on the carrier oil, so no single multiplier is right. See the substitution calculator.
- Should I use less carnauba because it is harder?
- No, and this is the most common mistake in wax substitution. Carnauba is the hardest wax as a solid and the weakest oil structurant, needing 4 to 5% where candelilla needs 1 to 2%. Use it at 1 to 3% for heat resistance alongside another wax. See carnauba wax.
- What equipment do I actually need?
- A scale reading to 0.01 g, a beaker in a pan of water, a thermometer, a spatula and your containers. Everything else is convenience. See equipment.
- Do I need to add vitamin E?
- It is worth adding at roughly 0.02 to 0.1% to slow oxidation, and it is not a preservative. Above about 100 parts per million the alpha form can turn pro-oxidant. See vitamin E and antioxidants.
When it goes wrong
- Why is my balm grainy?
- Shea or another stearin-rich butter crystallised slowly and coarsened. Remelt fully, then cool fast with stirring. See grainy shea butter.
- Why is there oil on top of my balm?
- The structure cannot hold all the liquid oil, usually made worse by warm and cool cycling. Raise the wax a point or two, or use an oil-binding structurant. See balm sweating.
- My lip balm has a hole down the middle.
- Shrinkage on solidification, which happens from the outside in. Pour cooler and do a second top-up pour. See tunnelling and dips.
- White spots on my balm: is it mould?
- Almost certainly not. Flat, powdery, static patches are fat bloom or grain. Fuzzy, raised, coloured and spreading is mould, and that batch goes in the bin. See mould in balm.
- My balm smells like crayons.
- Rancid oil. It cannot be reversed, and antioxidants will not rescue it. See rancid balm.
- Can I remelt a failed batch?
- Yes for texture problems, as long as you stay below 85 C and top up any volatiles. No for rancidity or mould.
- My balm melted in the car. Is it ruined?
- Usually still safe to use, but the texture will have changed and separated products may not remix. For a hot climate, reformulate with a high-melting wax. See balm melting in the heat.
- My lip balm stings. Why?
- Most often essential oils above safe lip levels, cooling agents such as menthol and camphor, flavour, or an allergy to an ingredient. Beeswax itself is a documented lip balm allergen. See balm stings or burns.
Ingredients
- Which oil lasts longest in a balm?
- Jojoba, squalane, meadowfoam and fractionated coconut, because they have essentially no bis-allylic positions for oxidation to attack. See the blend stability calculator.
- Is coconut oil good for lips?
- As a supporting 10 to 20% it is fine. As the base of a tube balm it is poor, because it is liquid at 24 to 26 C. See coconut oil in balms.
- Is petroleum jelly bad for you?
- Cosmetic grade petrolatum is highly refined and is the benchmark occlusive. The contamination concern applies to unrefined grades. The strongest honest argument against it is sourcing rather than safety. See natural versus petroleum.
- Is tallow good for skin?
- It is an effective occlusive and emollient that melts at a useful temperature. The popular claim that it matches human sebum outruns its evidence. See the evidence review.
- Is beeswax comedogenic?
- Nobody knows. There is no published comedogenicity study on beeswax in either direction, and the safety review that covers it does not mention the topic at all. The honest word is untested, not low. See comedogenic ratings.
- Is lanolin a common allergen?
- Less than its reputation suggests. General-population patch test positivity is around 0.4%, rising to 2.5 to 4.6% in dermatology referrals and much higher on damaged skin. See lanolin.
- How much essential oil is safe?
- Up to about 0.5 to 1% total in a lip product and 1 to 2% in an adult body balm, with individual materials restricted separately and often far lower. See the dilution calculator.
Buying, storing and selling
- How long does a balm last, and how should I store it?
- Typically nine to eighteen months. Keep it cool, dark and full, because packaging and temperature matter more than which oil you chose. See shelf life testing.
- How do I read a balm's ingredient list?
- Ingredients run in descending order by weight down to 1%, so the first three to five tell you nearly everything. See reading a balm label.
- Can I add SPF to a homemade balm?
- No. SPF is a tested performance claim rather than an ingredient, and an untested figure is worse than no claim at all. See SPF in lip balm.
- What do I need before I can sell balms?
- It depends where you are, and the requirements are real. Start with US labelling or selling in the UK and EU, and read cosmetic versus drug claims before you write a word of marketing.
- Is essential oil safe for my dog's paws?
- Be very careful. Dogs lick their paws, tea tree is dangerous for them, and essential oils are not safe for cats at all. See paw balm.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a balm and a salve?
Both are anhydrous, and the distinction is convention rather than definition. In common use a salve has a lower wax content, often around 8 to 15%, and usually carries an infused herb, while a balm is firmer and more likely to be a lip or body product. The only hard line in this whole vocabulary is water content.
How much beeswax do I need for a lip balm?
Ten to eighteen percent by weight for a twist-up tube and seven to twelve for a tin. Published industrial formulas run lower than craft recipes do, with beeswax at 5 to 10% alongside a high-melting wax at 3 to 8%.
Does a balm need a preservative?
A genuinely anhydrous balm does not, because its water activity is far below what microbes need. It does need one the moment water is present or routinely introduced, through aloe, a hydrosol, honey, wet fingers or shower use.
Why did my shea butter go grainy?
The stearin-rich triglycerides crystallised into the stable beta form and then coarsened over several days. Slow cooling causes it. Full melt above 45 C, then rapid cooling with stirring, prevents it.
Is lip balm addictive?
There is no published evidence of physical dependence on lip balm. What is documented is allergic and irritant contact cheilitis from balm ingredients, which produces a genuine cycle where using more makes the lips worse.
How long does homemade balm last?
Usually nine to eighteen months, limited by oxidation of the oils rather than by microbes. Packaging and storage temperature matter more than the choice of oil.
