Coconut oil in balms: virgin, refined and fractionated compared
A fair look at coconut oil in balms: the 24-26 C melt point, lauric acid, graininess, comedogenicity claims, and where fractionated coconut earns its place.
Coconut oil attracts more tribal argument than any other balm ingredient. One camp treats it as a complete skincare routine; the other insists it clogs pores and dries lips. Both positions are stated with more confidence than the evidence supports. What follows is what the material actually is, what it does in a balm, and where the complaints probably come from.
The INCI name for the whole oil is Cocos nucifera oil. The fractionated version is a different ingredient with a different INCI name, caprylic/capric triglyceride, and confusing the two causes most of the failed substitutions people report.
Coconut oil melts at 24 to 26 C, so it softens in a pocket and cannot hold a stick on its own. It works best as a supporting 10 to 20% of a formula, adding fast-melting slip and a clean feel. Fractionated coconut is a separate material: thin, odourless, liquid at any temperature, and stable for two to three years.
The three grades, and why they are not interchangeable

The single most useful line in that table is the last-but-one. Virgin and refined coconut oil are hard fats at normal room temperature and count towards the butter and hard fat fraction of a formula. Fractionated coconut is a liquid oil and counts towards the liquid fraction. Swapping one for the other without adjusting the wax is why a recipe that worked for someone else comes out soft in your kitchen.
What the melt point means in a pocket
Coconut oil's melt range of 24 to 26 C is the awkward fact around which everything else has to be arranged. Skin surface temperature is around 32 to 34 C. A trouser pocket in summer is well above 26 C. A car dashboard is far above it.
Practically, that means coconut oil is fully liquid on contact with skin, which is why it feels so slippery and vanishes so quickly, and it means a balm carrying a lot of it will slump on a warm day. It also means the oil provides no structural help at all when it matters, on the day the shop window gets sun. Compare that with cocoa butter at 34 to 38 C or kokum at 38 to 42 C, which stay solid at skin temperature and hold a stick together. Those trade-offs are laid out in butters compared.

If your balm is already collapsing in warm weather, coconut is usually part of the reason, and the fixes are in balm melting in the heat.
The lauric acid profile, good and bad
Coconut oil is 45 to 52% lauric acid (C12:0) and 16 to 20% myristic acid (C14:0), with total saturates of 85 to 92%. That composition explains three things at once.
It is stable. With almost no polyunsaturates, there is very little to oxidise. Two years is realistic, and the failure mode when it does age is usually a soapy or slightly cheesy note from hydrolysis to free fatty acids rather than the crayon smell of an oxidised seed oil. The general mechanism is in rancidity and oxidation.
It feels clean. Medium-chain saturates are small molecules, so they spread thin and stop being perceptible quickly. This is a genuine advantage in a balm that should not feel heavy.
Free lauric and capric acid can sting. Any triglyceride slowly hydrolyses, and coconut's free fatty acids are shorter-chain and more surface-active than, say, olive's. On intact skin this is nothing. On a cracked lip margin or a damaged patch it can produce a mild sting, which is a plausible contributor to some of the complaints below and to some of the reports of balms that sting.
Graininess, and how to avoid it
Coconut oil is a mixture of triglycerides whose fatty acids melt at very different temperatures, from caprylic at 16 C to stearic at 70 C. Cooled slowly from a partly melted state, the higher-melting fractions crystallise first, form coarse crystals, and leave the rest liquid around them. You feel this as grit. Cooled fast from a full melt, everything sets together into fine crystals and the texture is smooth.
This is the same mechanism that produces grainy shea butter, and the fix is the same: melt fully, hold hot enough for long enough to destroy every seed crystal, then cool quickly.
- Melt fully. Take the whole oil phase to 75-80 C in a water bath and hold for a few minutes. Not 45 C, which leaves crystal nuclei intact.
- Do not exceed 85 C for long. Above that you darken beeswax and degrade tocopherol for no benefit.
- Add heat-sensitive materials below 50-60 C. Flavour, essential oils and vitamin E go in on the way down.
- Pour at the right temperature. Tubes at 65-72 C, tins at 60-68 C.
- Cool fast. A cold water bath, or twenty minutes in the fridge, not the freezer. Slow cooling on the bench is what produces grain.

Comedogenicity claims, handled sceptically
Coconut oil is widely quoted as "comedogenic rating 4 out of 5". That number, and the whole scale, comes from a rabbit ear assay developed decades ago, in which materials were applied to the inside of a rabbit's ear and follicular changes were scored. The assay is sensitive, it uses a species whose follicles respond quite differently from human ones, it applies materials neat at high dose rather than at formula levels, and its results correlate only loosely with what actually happens on human faces.
So the number is not evidence. That is not the same as saying coconut oil never causes breakouts. Plenty of people report exactly that, consistently, and there is no reason to disbelieve them. The reasonable position is: comedogenicity is individual, the published scale is unreliable for prediction, the formula matters as much as the ingredient, and a two-week patch test on your own jawline tells you more than any table. Lips have no sebaceous follicles of the type involved in acne, so comedogenicity is not a relevant objection to coconut oil in a lip balm specifically. It is a live question for a facial cleansing balm or a body balm used on the back and chest.
The "coconut oil dries my lips" complaint
This is common enough to take seriously, and it is worth separating the plausible mechanisms from the folk explanations.

If coconut oil straight from the jar is your lip product, the fix is not to abandon coconut but to put it into a formula that has wax and butter behind it, at 10 to 20% rather than 100%.
How to use it well: a supporting role
Coconut earns its place in a balm as a fast-melting, clean-feeling, cheap and stable component that improves the initial glide without adding weight. It fails as a base because it contributes nothing above 26 C and because a high-coconut balm is soft, slumps in the heat and has a short-lived film.

Add 0.2 g mixed tocopherol on top of the 100 g if you want the extra margin, and expect about twenty 4.7 g tubes after a 10% overage. The wax and butter windows come from lip balm ratios, and the gloss component from castor oil.
Where fractionated coconut genuinely earns its place
Caprylic/capric triglyceride is an underrated workhorse and deserves separating from the argument about the whole oil. It is colourless, odourless, thin, dry-feeling, liquid at any temperature you will meet, and stable for two to three years because it is fully saturated. In practice it is the cheapest way to make a balm feel lighter without making it less stable, which is a combination almost nothing else offers: the light oils (grapeseed, standard sunflower) are all short-lived, and the stable oils are mostly rich.
Use it at 10 to 30% where you want to cut greasiness, in a cleansing balm where you want a thin, mobile oil phase (see cleansing balm), and anywhere odour would interfere with a flavour or fragrance. Its one weakness is that it can make a balm feel insubstantial if overdone, because the film disappears so completely. Pair it with something that leaves a trace: meadowfoam at 3 to 5%, or a little castor.
What it is not is natural coconut oil with the good bits kept. It is a processed fraction, and it has none of the lauric acid, none of the smell and none of the hardness. Whether that matters is a marketing question, not a performance one. What to do next
If you have coconut oil in the cupboard, make the 15% formula above and a version with the coconut replaced by more high-oleic sunflower, and see whether you can tell them apart on the lip. Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between coconut oil and fractionated coconut oil?
Fractionated coconut oil is not really coconut oil. The whole oil is split and the long-chain saturates, including the lauric acid that makes up half of it, are removed. What is left is caprylic and capric triglyceride: a thin, colourless, odourless liquid that stays liquid in the fridge and keeps for two to three years. It behaves nothing like the solid oil.
Is coconut oil good for lips?
It is a decent emollient and a reasonable occlusive, and it is cheap and pleasant to use, so as 10 to 20% of a formula it earns its place. As a lip product on its own it is poor: it melts at 24 to 26 C, so it will not hold a stick shape, and the film it leaves is thin and short-lived compared with a waxed balm.
Why does coconut oil go grainy?
Coconut oil contains several saturated fatty acids with different melting points, and cooled slowly they crystallise separately: the higher-melting fractions set first into coarse crystals while the rest is still liquid. The result is a gritty texture. Melting fully to 75 C and then cooling fast, in a cold water bath or twenty minutes in the fridge, prevents it.
Does coconut oil clog pores?
The comedogenic rating of 4 that circulates online comes from a rabbit ear assay from the 1970s and 1980s that is a poor predictor of human acne. Some people do break out from coconut oil on the face and their experience is real. The honest answer is that it may be comedogenic for some skin, that the numbered scale is not evidence, and that patch testing on yourself beats any table.
Why do people say coconut oil dries their lips?
Several plausible mechanisms, none proven. It is a weaker occlusive than a waxed balm, so water loss resumes sooner and the contrast reads as drying. It melts at body temperature and is easily licked or wiped away, which encourages reapplication and lip-licking. And it contains free lauric and capric acid, which can be mildly irritating on an already damaged lip margin.
Can I substitute fractionated coconut for coconut oil in a recipe?
Not directly. Coconut oil is solid below about 24 C and contributes hardness; fractionated coconut is a thin liquid and contributes none. Substituting one for the other one to one will give you a much softer balm. Replace the coconut with fractionated coconut plus roughly one to two percent extra wax to compensate.
Does virgin coconut oil work better than refined?
It smells of coconut and refined does not, and that is most of the difference. Virgin retains a little more of the minor polyphenol and tocopherol content, but at balm use levels the effect on performance is negligible. Choose virgin when you want the smell as part of the product and refined when it would fight your flavour or fragrance.
