Beeswax in balms: melting range, usage rates and how it behaves

Beeswax for makers: INCI Cera alba, verified composition, the 62 to 65 C USP melting range, why white and yellow melt the same, and usage rates per container.

Beeswax is the material every other balm wax is measured against. It is not the hardest, not the cheapest per unit of structure, and not vegan, but it sets with a cushion that no plant wax quite reproduces and it forgives bad weighing. This page covers what it is made of, how it behaves in a pot, how to spot a poor grade, and exactly how much of it you need.

What beeswax actually is

Worker bees secrete wax from abdominal glands to build comb. Rendered and filtered, it is a mixture of several hundred identified compounds, which is why it has no sharp single melting point. The proportions are consistent enough to serve as an identity check.

Practically, the hydrocarbon fraction is what you feel. It is the reason beeswax gives a slightly tacky, pliant film rather than the glassy snap of candelilla wax, and why it tolerates being over-dosed by a couple of points without turning brittle. It is also why no single melting figure describes it: in a 10 percent oleogel, one beeswax sample resolved three separate thermal events, at roughly 29, 43 and 50 C. Part of this wax is liquid below body temperature, which is why the pharmacopoeia publishes a range and why the softest fraction migrates first when a balm sweats.

Melting range and behaviour in the pot

Quote the method with the number. The USP melting range, 62 to 65 C, comes from general chapter 741 Class II, a capillary sample taken from first collapse to a clear melt. The European Pharmacopoeia publishes 61 to 66 C as a drop point, the temperature at which the first drop falls from a heated cup. Same wax, two methods. A single figure quoted to a tenth of a degree was never measured.

Beeswax dissolves fully in a 70 to 80 C water bath and stays clear. It does not need to be melted first and it does not scorch easily, but it does darken and lose aroma if held above 85 C for any length of time. Because its crystallisation window is broad, a beeswax balm thickens gradually as it cools rather than setting all at once, which is what makes it forgiving to pour. Target 65 to 72 C for lip tubes and 60 to 68 C for tins, and see pour temperatures for what goes wrong at each end of that window.

Note

Beeswax reaches full hardness over about 24 hours as the crystal network completes. Judging a batch ten minutes after pouring will tell you it is too soft, and you will over-correct.

Yellow, white and absolute

Bleaching changes what you smell and see, not how the wax behaves. The USP gives white and yellow the same 62 to 65 C melting range, and the only specification that separates them is acid value. If a supplier or a blog tells you white beeswax melts higher, lower or faster, that claim has no monograph behind it.

Yellow beeswax is filtered but otherwise unbleached. It carries carotenoid colour, a honey and propolis aroma, and traces of pollen. White beeswax is the same material bleached, most commonly by filtration through activated carbon, sometimes by controlled exposure to sunlight, ozone or peroxide. Ask the supplier which route was used if it matters to your claims, because "naturally bleached" and "chemically bleached" are both sold as white.

Choose yellow when the honey note suits the product (a lip balm, a hand salve) or when you want the colour. Choose white when you are building a precise fragrance, using pale pigments, or making anything where a yellow cast reads as discolouration. Beeswax absolute is a third thing entirely: a solvent extract used as an aromatic material, not a structurant, and it will not harden anything.

Pastilles, block and filtering

Pastilles (small lentil-shaped beads) weigh and melt faster and are worth the premium under a kilogram. Blocks are cheaper per kilogram but need chopping or grating, which is tedious and wastes wax on the grater. Raw or "unfiltered" cappings wax will contain propolis, pollen and hive debris. It can be strained through a fine metal sieve or muslin while molten, but plan for a loss of a few percent and expect the colour and scent to be much stronger. How much beeswax do I need

Work from fill weight, not container volume. Use 0.92 g/mL as the working density of a finished balm, and add 8 to 15 percent overage for what stays in the jug and on the spatula. All percentages below are weight percent of the finished formula.

Worked example. Twelve oval tubes at 4.25 g is 51 g of finished balm. Add 12 percent overage and weigh a 57 g batch. At 14 percent beeswax by weight that is 8.0 g of wax, with the remaining 49 g split between butters and oils. A tidy version, by weight: beeswax 14%, shea butter 18%, castor oil 10%, jojoba 25%, sweet almond oil 33%, which totals 100. On a 57 g batch: 8.0 g, 10.3 g, 5.7 g, 14.2 g, 18.8 g. Usage rates by product

Beeswax percentages sit at the top of the general wax windows because it is a middling-hardness wax. A twist tube needs 12 to 16 percent to survive being pressed sideways against a lip. A tin needs 8 to 11 percent so a fingertip can lift product without gouging. A classic salve follows the old rule of 1 part wax to 8 parts oil by weight, which is 11 percent, and a body balm sits lower again because it should melt on contact. How beeswax feels on the lips

At 10 to 14 percent a beeswax lip balm goes on with a short initial resistance, then releases into a soft, slightly waxy film that sits on the surface rather than sinking in. That film is the point: it slows water loss from the lip, which is what makes the product work. The sensory signature is cushion, a faint honey note in the yellow grade, and a mild cling that keeps the balm in place through talking and eating.

Push past 18 to 20 percent and the same properties turn into complaints. Payoff drops because the stick is too hard to shed material, so people press harder, and the film goes from cushioned to thick and draggy. The fix is rarely less wax alone. Adding 8 to 12 percent castor oil restores glide and gloss without softening the stick much, and swapping 2 percentage points of beeswax for a fine-crystal plant wax raises hardness while lowering the total wax load. If a balm feels grabby rather than hard, look at the oil blend before you touch the wax.

Allergy, propolis and skin safety

Beeswax itself is a poor sensitiser and safety reviews have long treated it as safe for cosmetic use at the levels balms need. The reported reactions almost always involve propolis, the resinous hive material that travels with wax and survives ordinary filtering. Propolis is a recognised contact allergen, and people sensitised to it can react to beeswax products, to raw honey and to some wound dressings. Bleached white grades carry less of it than raw cappings wax, though neither is guaranteed free of it.

In practice: declare beeswax plainly, do not market a beeswax balm as suitable for everyone, and if a customer reports irritation, propolis is the first suspect, ahead of the essential oils. Residues can also concentrate in wax, which is another reason to buy from a supplier who tests.

Adulteration and the tests makers actually use

Beeswax is expensive enough to be worth diluting, and paraffin and stearic acid are the traditional additions. Neither is visible. The definitive checks are laboratory ones: acid value, ester value, the ester to acid ratio (3.3 to 4.3 for genuine wax) and gas chromatography of the hydrocarbon profile. Nothing you can do on a kitchen bench replaces those.

The bench checks are still worth knowing as screens. Pure beeswax breaks with a dull, granular fracture when cold; paraffin-heavy wax breaks shinier and more crystalline. Chewed, pure beeswax becomes plastic and does not smear greasily on the teeth. A sharp melt well outside the 62 to 65 C range is a flag, as is a batch that stays cloudy in hot oil or one that smells of candle rather than honey. Treat all of these as reasons to ask the supplier a question, not as proof.

Safety

Buy from a supplier who will send a certificate of analysis. Cheap wax of unknown origin is the one input in a balm you genuinely cannot assess by eye, and it sets the structure of everything you make. See reading a balm label for how the finished list is read.

Sustainability, cost and storage

Beeswax is a byproduct of honey production, and the honey-to-wax figure commonly quoted is roughly 6 to 8 kg of honey consumed per kg of wax produced. It is an animal product, so it is excluded from vegan formulas and from some retailer standards. Sourcing matters: small apiary wax varies in colour and scent batch to batch, which is charming in a small line and a problem in a repeatable one.

On cost, compare cost per unit of structure rather than cost per kilogram. Candelilla usually prices higher per kilogram but you use somewhere between 60 and 100 percent as much, so the finished cost per tube can land close, or not, depending on where your test batch lands in that range. Storage is easy: cool, dark, wrapped against dust, away from strong odours. It does not go rancid in the way a liquid oil does, which is a useful contrast with the material covered in rancidity and oxidation.

The honest limits

Beeswax is not a hard wax as a solid. Needle penetration puts it at about 22 tenths of a millimetre against 0 to 1 for carnauba and 2 to 3 for candelilla, one of the softest materials on the bench. As an oil structurant it does better than that ranking implies: it gels oil at about 2 percent, twice as efficient as carnauba, and at the 10 to 20 percent loadings a balm uses, published work has found it statistically level with candelilla, rice bran and carnauba in canola oil, ahead of candelilla in medium chain triglycerides, and behind sunflower wax in everything. Those two rankings are set out in waxes compared. Its melting range of 62 to 65 C is still low enough that a beeswax-only stick softens in a hot car. Above roughly 20 percent in a lip formula it drags noticeably, laying down a thick film that resists rather than glides. It carries a scent that fights delicate fragrance. And it is not vegan, which for many makers ends the discussion before any of the rest matters: the alternatives are worked through in vegan beeswax substitutes.

None of that displaces it as the default. If you want one wax on the shelf that will make a passable lip balm, salve, body balm and solid perfume without you learning anything new, buy white pastilles and a decent thermometer. Add a second wax only when you have a specific complaint to fix, and pair beeswax with a genuinely tacky occlusive such as lanolin only when the product is meant to cling rather than glide.

What is the INCI name for beeswax?

Cera Alba on an EU ingredient list, Beeswax on a US one. Both cover yellow and white grades. The European Pharmacopoeia separately names the yellow grade Cera flava and the bleached grade Cera alba, which is why the two names appear together in supplier documents.

How much beeswax do I need for a lip balm?

Between 10 and 20 percent by weight for a twist tube and 7 to 12 percent for a tin. Fourteen percent is a good starting point for a tube. On a standard 4.25 g tube that is about 0.6 g of beeswax per tube, or 6 g for a batch of ten before overage.

Does white beeswax melt differently from yellow?

No. The USP gives both grades the same 62 to 65 C melting range, and the only specification that differs between them is acid value. White beeswax is bleached yellow beeswax, usually by carbon filtration or by exposure to sunlight, ozone or peroxide, and it loses aroma and colour bodies rather than melting behaviour. Anyone claiming bleaching changes the melt is wrong.

Does beeswax go off?

Not in any practical sense. It contains almost no polyunsaturates to oxidise, so stored cool, dark and wrapped it keeps for years. The white film that appears on aged blocks is bloom, a harmless migration of softer components to the surface. It disappears on melting or under a warm airflow.

Is beeswax a hard wax?

Not as a solid. Needle penetration puts beeswax at about 22 tenths of a millimetre, one of the softest waxes on the bench, against 0 to 1 for carnauba and 2 to 3 for candelilla. As an oil structurant it does better than that ranking suggests, gelling oil at about 2 percent where carnauba needs 4 to 5.

Can beeswax be adulterated?

Yes. Paraffin and stearic acid are the classic additions, and both are hard to spot by eye. Home checks such as fracture, chew and melt point behaviour are indicative only. A supplier certificate of analysis showing acid value, ester value and the ester to acid ratio is the practical defence.
