Balm making equipment: what you actually need, what is merely useful, and what is sold to you

Scales, water baths, jugs, thermometers and filling trays, with a scale resolution rule, an essential-useful-skippable table and how to get wax off properly.

Supplier equipment lists are written by people who sell equipment. They are not dishonest, but they are optimised for a full basket rather than for the two or three purchases that change your failure rate. This page separates the kit that decides whether a batch works from the kit that only makes a working batch faster, and it ends with the part nobody explains: getting wax off afterwards.

Short answer

Three purchases decide your results: a scale reading to 0.01 g, a way to melt gently in a water bath, and an immersed probe thermometer. Everything else, including filling trays, spouted beakers and dedicated pouring pitchers, is convenience. Buy the resolution, not the capacity, and not the accessories.

The scale: resolution matters far more than capacity

Scales are advertised on capacity, and capacity is the number that matters least. A home batch is 25 to 250 g. What decides whether the formula on paper is the formula in the jug is the smallest division the scale can read.

The problem is the minor phase. Structurants and oils are weighed in grams and forgive a little slop. Antioxidants, flavour and actives are weighed in tenths of a gram and do not. A 25 g lip balm batch with 0.5% mixed tocopherols needs 0.125 g. On a 1 g scale that quantity does not exist. On a 0.1 g scale it reads 0.1 or 0.2 g, so you are somewhere between 0.4% and 0.8%. On a 0.01 g scale you land on 0.12 or 0.13 g and nothing in the finished balm can detect the difference.

The working rule that falls out of that table: your scale division should be no larger than one twentieth of the smallest quantity you weigh, which holds quantisation error under about 2.5%. If the smallest thing you weigh is 0.13 g, you need 0.01 g. If you have scaled up and your smallest ingredient is 5 g, a 0.1 g scale is fine and a big one is more useful. This is also the reason most makers end up with two scales rather than one: a 200 g pocket scale at 0.01 g for the minor phase, and a 2 to 3 kg kitchen scale at 1 g for weighing out bulk wax and oil. Trying to buy a single instrument that does both is the expensive way to do it, and the arithmetic behind larger runs is set out in batch scaling.

Workshop tip

Buy a calibration weight and use it. Cheap 0.01 g scales drift, and the failure is silent. A 100 g or 200 g check weight takes ten seconds to confirm before a batch. Also weigh on a solid surface, away from a draught, and never put a hot jug straight onto the pan: rising warm air and convection currents can shift a 0.01 g reading by several divisions.

Heat: the water bath versus direct heat

Balm materials melt between about 24 C and 86 C: beeswax 61 to 65 C, candelilla 68 to 73 C, carnauba 82 to 86 C. Natural fats and waxes have melting ranges rather than points, which is why a melt looks half done for a while before it clears. Nothing in a balm needs a heat source hotter than boiling water.

A water bath (bain-marie) is a saucepan of simmering water with your melting vessel standing in it. Its virtue is that the heat source is capped near 100 C, so however inattentive you are, the contents cannot reach a temperature that damages them. Direct heat on a domestic hob is different: the pan base can sit at 150 C or more while the bulk of the melt reads 70 C, and the film of wax touching that base is what darkens, what degrades your tocopherol and what drives off the volatile top notes you paid for. The FACTS ceiling of 85 C is a bulk temperature, and direct heat blows past it locally long before the thermometer notices.

Two honest exceptions. Carnauba at 82 to 86 C needs the bath water genuinely boiling rather than steaming. And at any volume, a controlled hotplate or an immersion circulator set to 78 C turns the bath into a hold rather than a chase. Which temperature to use when is on pour temperatures.

Safety

Molten fat at 75 C causes deep scalds and clings to skin instead of running off. Use a vessel with a handle you can hold with a dry cloth, never with a wet one. Never let bath water splash into the melt: it spatters, and it puts water into an anhydrous product that has no preservative. Keep children and pets out of the room while you are carrying a hot jug, and put the jug down before you reach for anything.

Melting vessels: stainless, borosilicate or silicone

All three work. They fail differently, and the choice is really about whether you need to see the melt.

If you buy one vessel, make it a stainless jug with a handle and a drip-free lip, sized so a 100 g batch fills it a third full. Too large and thin films cool fast up the walls; too small and it slops when you stir. Make the second one borosilicate, because judging when the last beeswax flake or shea crystal has gone is far easier through glass than by fishing with a spatula.

Thermometers: why an infrared reading of a stirred melt lies

A probe measures the liquid it sits in. An infrared gun measures radiation leaving a surface and infers a temperature from an assumed emissivity. Those are not the same measurement, and on a balm melt the gap is large enough to ruin a pour.

The surface of an uncovered, stirred melt is the coolest part of it. It is radiating to the room, losing heat to convection, and being renewed by the stir. Point an infrared gun at it and you get the temperature of a thin skin, commonly several degrees below the bulk that is about to go into your tubes. Worse, if the jug is polished stainless, the low emissivity of bright metal makes the reading badly wrong whenever the spot catches the wall, and the spot is bigger than people assume: at a distance-to-spot ratio of 12 to 1, holding the gun 30 cm away averages a 25 mm circle.

Infrared is good for what a probe cannot do: whether a tin has set, whether a mould is still warm, whether the room is too cold to pour into. Use a probe for every decision involving the word "pour", and calibrate it in ice water (0 C) and boiling water (100 C at sea level, a little under at altitude).

Pouring vessels, spouts and filling trays

Pouring is where good equipment shows. A rolled lip dribbles down the jug's own side; a cut, thin-walled spout breaks the stream cleanly. If your vessel dribbles, decanting into a small spouted beaker before filling costs about two degrees and saves the mess.

For lip tubes, a filling tray holds a block of tubes level, at a fixed height, with a flat plate across their tops so you can deliberately overfill, let it set and scrape the excess back. Freehand filling is entirely possible and produces identical balm, but it is slower and the top surface is less consistent. A folded card jig with holes punched to hold five tubes upright does most of the job for a first batch. Technique, overfill and top-up timing are covered on filling lip balm tubes.

Polyethylene transfer pipettes are excellent for top-up pours, but they soften in a 70 C melt, so draw and dispense promptly rather than leaving one standing in the jug. For tins and jars, nothing beats a steady jug and a level tray.

A realistic starting kit

  1. Weighing. One 200 g pocket scale at 0.01 g, plus a calibration weight. Add a 1 g kitchen scale only when a batch exceeds the pocket scale's capacity.
  2. Heat. A saucepan you already own, plus a 250 to 500 mL stainless jug with a handle. A trivet or folded cloth to stand the hot jug on.
  3. Measurement. One probe thermometer with a stem long enough to sit 2 cm into the melt without touching the base.
  4. Handling. One small silicone spatula, one offset palette knife or scraper for levelling tin tops, a pack of transfer pipettes.
  5. Containers. Buy twice as many as your batch fills. Your first pour will be wrong somewhere, and remelting into fresh containers is easier than cleaning used ones. Choices are compared on the packaging guide.
  6. Cleaning. Kitchen paper, a bottle of isopropyl alcohol, a kettle, and a bucket you are willing to pour wax washings into.

That is the whole kit for a first batch of lip balm. Work through two or three batches before buying anything else, because the second purchase you want is almost never the one you predicted. Cleaning wax off equipment, properly

This is the part every equipment list skips, and it is why people quietly stop making balm. Wax is not food residue: it is a hard, hydrophobic solid at room temperature, cold detergent does nothing to it, and it sets in a drain trap.

The governing fact is temperature. Water from a domestic hot tap runs at roughly 50 to 55 C, which is below the melting range of every structurant you use. Washing beeswax in hot tap water simply moves solid wax around. To remove it with water you need water hotter than the wax melts: above 65 C for beeswax, above 73 C for candelilla, above 86 C for carnauba. Kettle water does this easily. So does an oven at 100 C.

Note

Do not pour molten or wax-laden washings down the sink. Wax sets in the trap and in the pipe run beyond it, and it accumulates. Tip washings into a bucket, let them cool, lift the solid disc off the top and bin it. Keep tubes and tins dry rather than washing them: an unused container that has been rinsed never fully dries inside, and residual water in an anhydrous product is exactly the condition that requires a preservative. Safety

Cloths and paper soaked in oils high in linolenic acid, such as hemp or rosehip, can self-heat as they oxidise. It is a small risk at balm quantities, but do not leave a bundle of oily rags balled up in a bin. Spread them flat to dry or seal them in a metal tin with a lid.

What to buy after the first three batches

What earns its place next is dictated by what keeps going wrong. Persistent grain in shea balms points at temperature control, so a circulator or controlled hotplate is the next buy, for the reasons set out in grainy shea butter. Shrinkage dips point at the pour, which is a thermometer and technique problem before it is an equipment one, covered in tunnelling and dips. Mess and slow filling point at the jug and the tray.

Buy one thing ahead of need: spare containers. The point of all of this equipment is that it makes a batch repeatable, and a repeatable batch needs somewhere to go. When you buy the materials to fill it, the questions worth asking a supplier are on sourcing ingredients.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need a 0.01 g scale to make lip balm?

For anything under about 200 g of batch, yes. A 25 g batch with 0.5% tocopherol needs 0.125 g weighed. A 0.1 g scale quantises that to 0.1 or 0.2 g, an error of up to 40%. A 0.01 g scale brings it to about 4%. Capacity matters far less: 200 g of capacity is plenty for a home batch.

Can I melt balm ingredients directly in a saucepan?

You can, and small commercial makers do it with controlled hotplates, but on a domestic hob the pan base can pass 150 C while the bulk reads 70 C. That darkens beeswax, destroys tocopherol and flashes off aromatics. A water bath caps the heat source near 100 C and makes overheating almost impossible.

Is an infrared thermometer good enough for pour temperature?

No, not on a stirred melt. Infrared reads a surface, and the surface of a stirred, uncovered melt sits several degrees below the bulk because it is losing heat by radiation and convection. On a shiny stainless jug the reading is worse still, because polished metal has low emissivity. Use an immersed probe for pour decisions.

How do I get wax off my jug and spatula?

Wipe it out with paper while it is still warm, before anything sets. That removes most of it. Then wash with water hotter than the wax melt range: beeswax needs above 65 C, carnauba above 86 C, so a normal hot tap will not do it. Finish with isopropyl alcohol to take off the oily film.

What is the minimum kit to make a first batch?

A 0.01 g scale, a stainless or borosilicate jug, a saucepan for the water bath, a probe thermometer, a small silicone spatula and your containers. Everything else on a supplier's list is convenience. You can pour tubes freehand into a folded card jig for a first batch and decide later whether a tray earns its space.

Should balm equipment be kept separate from kitchen equipment?

Keep a dedicated set. It is partly hygiene and partly practicality: wax residue is hard to remove completely, and essential oils, pigments and non-food materials should not cycle through cooking utensils. If you ever sell what you make, a separate, labelled set is also the easiest thing to demonstrate to an inspector.
