Convert a beeswax quantity into candelilla, carnauba, rice bran, sunflower or berry wax, with honest ranges and the reasons a single multiplier cannot be right.
Swapping beeswax for a plant wax is the most common reformulation in this craft, and it is also where the internet's advice is least reliable. This calculator gives you a starting range rather than a false single number, and explains where that range comes from.
As a starting point, use 0.6 to 1.0 times the beeswax weight for candelilla, 0.6 to 0.9 for rice bran, 0.4 to 0.7 for sunflower, and 1.0 to 1.4 for carnauba as a sole wax, because carnauba is the hardest wax but the weakest oil gelator. Then make a test batch, because the carrier oil changes the answer.
Why a single multiplier cannot be right
The rule most often repeated is that candelilla is twice as hard as beeswax, so you use half as much. It traces to craft forum posts from around 2011 and 2012 rather than to any measurement, and the published data pulls in three directions at once.
- It supports the rule once. In rice bran oil, candelilla's minimum gelling concentration is 1% and beeswax's is 2%. Exactly two to one.
- It says the gap is far bigger. On neat needle penetration, candelilla sits at 2 to 3 tenths of a millimetre against beeswax at about 22, which is a sevenfold to tenfold difference in the hardness of the raw material.
- It says the gap is far smaller, or reversed. At a fixed 10% loading in canola oil, candelilla, beeswax, rice bran and carnauba came out statistically equal. In medium chain triglycerides at the same loading, candelilla came last, below beeswax. In another study at 15% loading, beeswax beat candelilla.
All three can be true because they are measuring different things in different solvents. That is the finding, and it is more useful than a tidy number would be.

Read the first two columns together and the standard advice falls apart. Carnauba is the hardest solid and the weakest gelator. Bayberry is nearly as hard as candelilla at half the melting point, which shows that melting point and hardness are independent properties. Sunflower wax is the strongest structurant per gram in every comparison we could find, and it wins by a wide margin.
Most cosmetic "berry wax" is Rhus verniciflua peel wax, which is largely triglyceride rather than wax ester, and a significant part of it melts below 30 C. True bayberry wax from Myrica is a different material with different behaviour. Check the INCI name, not the marketing name.
What else changes when you swap
Firmness is the easy part. The harder part is feel. Beeswax has a cushioned, faintly tacky character that plant waxes do not reproduce; converted formulas tend to feel glassier, drier and less forgiving on the lips. Two usual compensations: raise the softer butter by two or three points, or add five to ten percent castor oil for cling and gloss. A blend of two plant waxes almost always beats a single substitute, because you can borrow melting point from one and cushion from the other.
There is also the practical matter of melting. Carnauba at 80 to 86 C needs a hotter melt than beeswax, and if you do not take it fully into solution you get gritty flecks in the finished balm that no amount of stirring will remove.
Then test it
Make 25 g. Pour a tube and a tin from the same batch. Leave them 24 hours, then try them in the morning, in the cold and in a warm pocket. That single test tells you more than any table on this site. Frequently asked questions
Why does the tool give a range instead of a number?
Because the published measurements disagree, and they disagree for a reason. One study found candelilla gels an oil at 1% where beeswax needs 2%, exactly the familiar two to one. Others found them statistically equal at 10%, and one found beeswax stronger. The carrier oil changes the answer, so a single multiplier cannot be right.
Should I really use more carnauba, not less?
As a sole structuring wax, yes. Carnauba is the hardest wax on the bench and the weakest oil gelator of the common group, needing 4 to 5% where candelilla needs 1 to 2%. Swapping it in at a third of the beeswax weight gives a softer balm, not a harder one.
So why does everyone use carnauba in heat-resistant balms?
For its melting point, not its firmness. At 80 to 86 C it holds a structure together in conditions that would collapse a beeswax balm. One to three percent alongside a main wax is the sensible way to use it.
Is candelilla vegan?
Yes, it is a plant wax from a desert shrub. Note that it is wild harvested and the species is listed under CITES Appendix II, so responsible sourcing matters. Beeswax is not vegan.
What changes besides firmness when I swap waxes?
Feel, mostly. Beeswax has a cushioned, slightly tacky character that plant waxes do not reproduce. A converted formula often feels glassier and drier, so add a little more butter or castor to bring the cushion back.
