Lip balm ratios: 1:1:1, 3:2:1 and the rest, converted to weight percent
The popular part-based lip balm ratios converted to weight percent, a firmness scale from 5% to 25% wax, and why measuring wax by volume gives inconsistent results.
Part-based ratios are how balm making is taught and they are the reason so many first batches fail. A ratio tells you a proportion, not a unit, and the unit people reach for is a spoon. This page converts every ratio in common circulation into weight percent, shows what each one actually produces, and gives a firmness scale you can aim at instead of guessing.
Written as oil to butter to wax, 3:2:1 is 50% oil, 33.3% butter and 16.7% wax by weight, which is a standard tube balm. 1:1:1 is 33.3% each and gives a very hard stick. 2:2:1 is 20% wax. The classic salve rule is 1 part wax to 8 parts oil, or 11.1% wax.
Why volume parts are unreliable
Weigh a level tablespoon of beeswax pastilles, then weigh a level tablespoon of the same wax chopped fine from a block. The pastille spoon will typically come in around half the weight of the packed one, because pastilles are hollow-packed spheres with a lot of air between them. Nothing in the ratio changed; the amount of structurant did, by a factor close to two.
The same problem runs through the rest of the ingredient list. Shea butter scooped at 18 C occupies more volume than the same mass melted and poured. Coconut oil is solid below 24 to 26 C and liquid above it, so a "cup" is two different masses depending on the room. Grated versus pastilled versus block, packed versus loose, warm kitchen versus cold: all of it moves. A formula in weight percent removes every one of those variables, scales to any batch size by simple multiplication, and can be compared directly against someone else's formula. That is why it is the only unit used on this site.
Every common ratio, converted
Ratios are written in different orders by different sources, which is its own source of ruined batches. Below, each ratio is stated with the order it is normally given in, and converted to weight percent of the total. Each row totals 100.

Two things fall out of that table. First, 1:1:1 and 1:8 differ by a factor of three in wax, and both are given online as "the" lip balm ratio. Second, once you are in percentages you can see instantly whether a ratio lands in the usable window for the container you have: 10 to 20% wax for a twist-up tube, 7 to 12% for a tin. A reference formula built from 3:2:1
Ratios describe categories, not ingredients, so here is 3:2:1 written out as a real formula. Weight percent of the total, totalling 100, with grams for a 60 g batch. With 10% overage that fills two 1 oz tins at 27 g, or twelve twist-up tubes at 4.5 g.

Notice that "2 parts butter" became two different butters and "3 parts oil" became two different oils. The ratio constrains the class totals only. Everything interesting about how a balm feels happens inside those totals, which is the subject of butters compared.
The firmness scale: 5% to 25% wax
This is the number worth memorising. Holding butters at roughly 20% and using beeswax as the structurant, wax percentage maps onto texture as follows. Every step is a genuinely different product.

Move in steps of 2 percentage points when you are adjusting. One point is at the edge of perceptible, five points is a different product. Whatever you change, take it out of the liquid oil so the total stays at 100. If the balm is at the wrong end of this scale, too hard or too soft covers the diagnosis in more detail.
How butter content shifts the wax you need
Hard butters are partly structural, so the more butter in the formula the less wax it takes to reach the same firmness. The trade is real but not one for one.

As a rule of thumb, every 10 percentage points of hard butter replaces roughly 1.5 to 2 points of wax. Weight the rule by which butter: cocoa (33 to 38% stearic) and kokum (50 to 60% stearic) set hard and count at the top of that range, while shea and mango, both oleic-led, count at the bottom. If you switch structurant entirely, remember that candelilla is harder per gram than beeswax and substitutes at roughly 0.6 to 0.7 times the weight, a point developed in waxes compared.
Climate and container change the target
A ratio that works in a British spring fails in a Texas July. Two variables move the target: the ambient temperature the product will live in, and whether the user picks it up with a fingertip or twists it up as a stick.

For anything shipping through a summer postal network, add 1 to 3% carnauba on top rather than pushing beeswax past 20%. Carnauba melts at 82 to 86 C and lifts the softening point sharply for very little textural cost, though more than 3% adds drag. Balm melting in the heat covers the shipping case, and the traditional 1 to 8 rule sits behind the herbal salve formula.
Method
- Convert before you weigh. Add the parts, divide each by the total, multiply by 100. Confirm the three figures sum to exactly 100 before you touch a scale.
- Scale to the batch. Multiply each percentage by the batch weight, divide by 100. Add 10% overage on top of the container total, not inside it.
- Melt at 75 to 80 C. Wax, butters and oils together in a water bath until fully clear. Shea in particular must lose every crystal or the balm will feel gritty.
- Add heat-sensitive materials below 60 C. Tocopherol, flavour and any essential oil go in after the melt has cooled to 60 C (140 F) or lower.
- Pour at the right window. 65 to 72 C for tubes, 60 to 68 C for tins. Top up tubes once the shrinkage dip appears.
- Cure 24 to 48 hours, then test. Press with a thumbnail, twist a stick up 3 mm, and draw it once across the back of your hand. Judge from that, not from the warm batch.
Scaling from a test batch to a production run brings its own arithmetic, particularly around overage and minimum weighable quantities, which is covered at batch scaling.
How to adjust it
- Harder: beeswax up 2 points, high-oleic sunflower down 2.
- Softer: beeswax down 2 points, liquid oil up 2. Below 7% you no longer have a stick.
- Glossier: castor from 10% to 15%, taken from the sunflower.
- Less greasy: swap 10 points of sunflower for squalane or fractionated coconut, and drop shea by 4 points into cocoa.
- Vegan: 16.7% beeswax becomes 11% candelilla; put the recovered 5.7 points into castor and mango butter.
- Cheaper: hold wax, replace cocoa butter with refined shea, and use standard rather than high-oleic sunflower, accepting a shelf life of six to twelve months.

What to do with this
Pick a wax percentage from the firmness scale rather than a ratio from a recipe, then build the rest of the formula around it. That inverts the usual process and it is a better one, because firmness is the property you can actually feel and judge, while a ratio is only a description of how someone else arrived at theirs. What is the 1:1:1 lip balm ratio?
Equal parts wax, butter and liquid oil, which works out at 33.3% each by weight. It is the most repeated ratio online and it produces a very hard stick with poor payoff, closer to a wax crayon than a lip balm. It is a useful base for a solid perfume or a heavy-duty barrier stick, not for everyday lips.
What ratio of beeswax to oil should I use?
For a salve with no butters, 1 part wax to 8 parts oil by weight is the traditional rule, which is 11.1% wax. For a lip balm in a tube, 1 part wax to 5 parts of everything else, about 16.7% wax, is closer. Both are weight ratios. The same numbers measured by volume will not repeat.
Is 3:2:1 better than 2:2:1 for lip balm?
For most people, yes. 3:2:1 (oil, butter, wax) is 50% oil, 33.3% butter and 16.7% wax, which lands in the middle of the useful window for a twist-up tube. 2:2:1 is 20% wax, at the hard end, and gives a stick that feels stiff and releases little product unless your climate is hot.
Can I measure lip balm ingredients in tablespoons?
You can, but the result will not repeat. Beeswax pastilles pack at roughly half the density of a solid block chopped fine, so a tablespoon of wax can vary by a factor of two in weight. Butters change volume with temperature. Weight is the only unit that gives the same balm twice.
How does adding butter change the wax I need?
Hard butters do part of the wax's job. As a working rule, every 10 percentage points of hard butter lets you drop roughly 1.5 to 2 points of wax at the same firmness. Cocoa and kokum count more than shea and mango, because their stearic content is higher and they set harder.
Do the percentages have to add up to 100?
Yes. A formula in weight percent is only meaningful if the column totals 100, because that is what makes it scalable to any batch size and comparable to any other formula. If your ratio conversion lands on 99.9 or 100.1 through rounding, adjust the largest liquid oil to close the gap.
