Herbal salve: infusing the oil, the 1:8 wax rule and a working formula
How to make a herbal salve properly: drying and infusing the herbs, straining, the one part wax to eight parts oil rule, and a full percentage formula.
A herbal salve is the oldest form in this family: oil sat with plant material until it carries some of that material's soluble content, then stiffened with just enough wax to hold a shape in a tin. Almost everything that goes wrong with one goes wrong before the wax is weighed, in the infusion. That is where the water gets in and where the mould starts.
Infuse fully dried herb in a stable oil for two to six weeks in a jar, or four to eight hours at 50 to 70 C for a fast infusion. Strain hard, then melt one part beeswax to eight parts oil by weight, about 11% wax, at 70 to 80 C and pour into tins at 60 to 68 C.
What separates a salve from the rest of the family
A salve is the oil-dominant end of the anhydrous range: typically 70 to 90% liquid oil, 8 to 15% wax and little or no butter. That composition is why it feels soft and greasy rather than waxy, why it spreads over a large area of rough skin easily, and why it slumps in a hot car. It is the same structure as every other product on this site, just with the wax lever set low. The herbal part is a claim about the oil, not the structure. A salve made with plain olive oil and one made with six weeks of calendula infusion are physically identical. All the difference sits in what the oil picked up.
Step one: dry the plant material
This is the step people skip and the reason salves grow fur. Fresh plant material is 70 to 90% water by weight. Oil and water do not mix, so that water does not dissolve into the infusion, it separates out and collects as droplets on the jar wall and at the bottom, under a layer of oil that keeps the oxygen out. That is close to an ideal environment for mould and for anaerobic bacteria, and no amount of vitamin E will help, because antioxidants slow oxidation and do nothing at all to microbes.
Two acceptable routes. Use herb that is fully dried and crisp, dried in a single layer out of direct sun until it snaps rather than bends. Or wilt fresh material one layer deep on a rack for 12 to 48 hours in a warm airy room until it is leathery. Aromatic leaves like yarrow wilt in a day; fleshy chickweed and plantain take longer and are the usual culprits.
Any visible water, cloudiness at the bottom of the jar, fizzing, a yeasty or sour smell, or a film on the surface means the infusion is contaminated. Throw it away. You cannot rescue it by straining, heating or adding vitamin E, and a mouldy infusion turns into a mouldy salve. See mould in balm for what growth actually looks like in a fat product.
The three infusion methods, with times and temperatures
All three do the same job at different speeds and with different losses. Use roughly 1 part dried herb to 5 parts oil by weight for a standard strength infusion, or 1:8 for a lighter one, and make sure the herb stays fully submerged throughout. For the jar method, fill a clean dry jar two thirds with herb, cover with oil to 2 cm above the material, cap and shake daily, topping up if the herb swells above the surface. For the heated methods use a water bath rather than direct heat, and never let the oil smoke.
Choose the base oil for shelf life, not romance. Olive at 55 to 80% oleic and high-oleic sunflower at 75 to 85% oleic both keep for one to two years. Standard sunflower and grapeseed are 55 to 75% linoleic and are half rancid before you finish the tin. Jojoba lasts five years plus but extracts differently, being wax esters rather than a triglyceride oil.
Straining, and the check that catches a bad batch
Strain through muslin over a jug, then squeeze the cloth hard. The squeezed fraction carries most of the colour and also most of the residual moisture and cell debris, so let the strained oil stand for 24 to 48 hours and decant off the top, leaving sediment behind. A distinct heavier layer at the bottom is water, and that batch is not safe to jar.
Expect to lose 15 to 25% of the oil to the spent herb: 300 g of oil on 60 g of dried herb returns 230 to 255 g. That is why infused batches come up short, and why the overage below matters.
The 1:8 rule and how to move off it
One part beeswax to eight parts oil by weight is the traditional salve ratio, and it is a good one. Expressed as a percentage of the finished product it is 1 divided by 9, or 11.1% wax. Everything else is that dial turned up or down.

Two corrections to the old rule. It assumes a plain liquid oil, so any butter you add counts partly as structure and the wax should come down to compensate. And it assumes beeswax: candelilla is harder at equal weight, so substitute at roughly 0.6 to 0.7 times the beeswax weight, and the wax comparison explains why carnauba is the wrong tool here. All-purpose herbal salve, 300 g batch
All percentages are weight percent of the finished batch and total exactly 100. This batch of 300 g fills ten 1 oz (30 mL) tins at 27 g each, which is 270 g, leaving 30 g of overage (10%) for what clings to the jug and the spatula.

The wax to liquid oil ratio here is 33:240, about 1:7.3, slightly firmer than 1:8 on paper because the shea is doing some of the structural work.
Method
- Weigh everything cold. Infused oils, castor, shea and beeswax into a heatproof jug on a scale reading to 0.1 g. Keep the tocopherol and essential oil aside.
- Melt at 70 to 80 C. Stand the jug in a pan of simmering water. Because there is shea in this formula, hold at 75 to 80 C (167 to 176 F) for five minutes after the last wax fleck disappears, so every fat crystal is melted. Do not push past 85 C: it darkens beeswax and degrades tocopherol.
- Run a set test. Drop a teaspoon onto a saucer from the fridge and wait two minutes. Press it. Too hard, stir in 5 to 10 g more infused oil. Too soft, add 3 to 5 g more wax and remelt. This costs three minutes and saves a whole batch.
- Cool to 55 to 60 C. Off the heat, stirring. Now add the tocopherol and any essential oil and stir for thirty seconds. Adding aromatics above 60 C flashes off the top notes.
- Pour at 60 to 68 C. Into dry tins on a level tray. Pouring too hot gives centre dips and cracked tops, pouring too cool gives lumps and a rough surface.
- Cool fast, then cure. With shea present, cool quickly: a cold water bath or twenty minutes in the fridge, not the freezer. Then leave uncovered at room temperature until fully opaque, cap, and label with the herbs and the date.
How to adjust it
Change one thing at a time and write down what you changed. Each of these is a specific move on the formula above.
- Too firm in a cold room: drop beeswax from 11% to 9% and put the 2% into the infused oil. That takes it to roughly a 1:9 ratio.
- Slumps in summer: raise beeswax to 13 or 14% and take it out of the liquid oil, or swap 3% of the beeswax for 2% candelilla, which is harder at equal weight.
- Too greasy and slow to sink in: replace 15% of the olive with a fast oil such as fractionated coconut or apricot kernel. Do not solve greasiness with more wax, which only adds drag.
- Not enough cling on hands and heels: take castor from 4% to 8%, out of the base oil. Above about 15% it goes noticeably sticky.
- Grainy after a week: cut shea from 8% to 4% and add 4% kokum or mango butter, which crystallise more uniformly, or drop the butter entirely and run the salve at 84% oil.
- Vegan version: replace 11% beeswax with 7% candelilla wax and add the spare 4% back to the infused oil.

Hot fat burns badly and sticks to skin: use a water bath, dry hands and dry equipment, and keep the melt below 85 C. Patch test any new salve on the inner forearm for 24 hours. Do not use a salve on deep wounds, burns, broken skin or infected skin, or on animal bites. Keep total essential oil at 1 to 2% for adults, 0.5 to 1% for over 65s and sensitive skin, and lower again for young children. Never claim a salve treats, cures or prevents anything.

Storage, labelling and what to make next
Shelf life is set by the base oil, not the herbs: one to two years on olive or high-oleic sunflower, six to twelve months on standard sunflower. Store capped, cool and dark. Label every tin with the herbs, the base oil and the make date. If you are selling, that label needs a full ingredient declaration in INCI order, and the scent has to sit inside the essential oil limits for a leave-on product.
Once the base works reliably the variations are small. Push the wax to 14% and add castor for a gardener's hand salve that survives washing up, or drop to 9% wax and more butter for a softer body version. Keep the infusion discipline constant and the rest is arithmetic.
Frequently asked questions
What is the beeswax to oil ratio for a salve?
The traditional rule is one part beeswax to eight parts oil by weight, which works out at about 11% wax in the finished product. Use 1:10 (roughly 9% wax) for a soft, spreadable salve, and 1:6 (roughly 14% wax) for a firm one that survives a warm pocket. Always test a spoonful on a cold saucer before pouring the whole batch.
Can I use fresh herbs in an infused oil?
Only if you wilt them first. Fresh plant material is 70 to 90% water, and that water separates under the oil, feeds mould and spoils the batch within weeks. Wilt fresh herbs in a single layer for 12 to 48 hours until they are leathery and have lost most of their weight, or use fully dried herb. St John's wort is the traditional exception and is still safer wilted.
How long does a homemade herbal salve last?
Between six months and two years, set by the shelf life of the base oil rather than by the herbs. Olive or high-oleic sunflower gives one to two years, standard sunflower six to twelve months. Store cool, dark and capped, scoop with clean dry fingers, and discard at the first crayon or old-nut smell.
Do I need a preservative in a herbal salve?
No, provided it is genuinely water free. Microbes need free water, and a dry salve sits far below the water activity even moulds require. The risk is not the formula, it is the process: undried herb, a damp jar, a wet spoon or condensation in the tin all introduce water and can grow mould in an otherwise sound salve.
Is comfrey safe to put in a salve?
Comfrey contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which are liver toxins. Regulators in several countries restrict or prohibit internal comfrey products and limit topical use to unbroken skin, short courses and adults. It is traditionally applied to intact skin only, never to open wounds or broken skin, and not during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If in doubt, leave it out of a general-purpose salve.
Why did my salve turn out grainy?
Almost always shea butter. Shea is 30 to 45% stearic acid and it recrystallises into large gritty crystals if it cools slowly from a partly melted state. Hold the melt at 75 to 80 C long enough to melt every crystal, then cool fast in a cold water bath or twenty minutes in the fridge. Kokum and mango butter grain far less.
