Candelilla wax: what the substitution evidence actually says

Candelilla is the wax most makers reach for when beeswax is off the table, and it comes with the most repeated rule in balm making: it is twice as hard, so use half. That rule is directionally right, numerically a coincidence, and has no technical origin. It traces to craft forum threads and supplier blog posts from around 2011 and 2012, not to any measurement. Here is what the evidence actually supports.
Candelilla wax (INCI Euphorbia cerifera cera) melts at 68.5 to 72.5 C by the NF monograph. Replace beeswax at 0.6 to 1.0 times its weight, starting at 0.8 and confirming with a test batch, and return the difference to the liquid oils. Typical use is 7 to 13 percent in a lip tube.
Where candelilla wax comes from
Candelilla is scraped from the surface of Euphorbia antisyphilitica, a leafless, pencil-stemmed shrub of the Chihuahuan desert in Coahuila, Chihuahua and Durango, and across the border in west Texas. The plant coats itself in wax to survive the heat, which is exactly the property makers exploit.
It is wild harvested, not farmed. Harvesters (candelilleros) pull whole plants, boil the stems in water acidified with sulfuric acid, and skim the crude wax cake that floats off. The crude material, cerote, is then filtered, bleached to varying degrees and sold as flakes or pellets. The refining step matters: darker grades carry more resin and more odour, while heavily refined pale grades are cleaner but cost more. Older INCI documentation and much supplier literature still uses the synonym Euphorbia cerifera, which is why the label name and the botanical name do not match.
What is in it, and what that buys
Candelilla is unusual among cosmetic waxes because most of it is not ester at all. It is dominated by long chain hydrocarbons, principally the C31 alkane hentriacontane, with a small ester fraction, free acids, alcohols and resin making up the rest. Beeswax is almost the mirror image, at 58 percent wax esters and 27 percent hydrocarbons.

The alkane fraction crystallises into a finer, more regular network than beeswax manages, and it lacks the plastic, slightly tacky character beeswax gets from its own mixed fractions. That is candelilla in one sentence: more structure, less give. It also melts in stages like every natural wax, with a secondary dissolution event resolved at about 36 C in a 10 percent oleogel. The three answers to "how much candelilla replaces beeswax"
Three different measurements give three different substitution factors, and publishing only one of them is how the craft internet got here.
- Critical gelling concentration says 0.5. In rice bran oil, candelilla forms a gel at 1 percent where beeswax needs 2. Exactly two to one, which looks like vindication for the folk rule until you notice the rule came first, and that this regime is not the one a balm sits in.
- Neat penetration says 0.1 to 0.15. As solid blocks, candelilla measures 2 to 3 tenths of a millimetre and beeswax about 22, a seven to tenfold gap. Nobody uses a factor of 0.15, and nobody should, because block hardness is not what a balm is asking of the wax.
- Equal-loading gel firmness says about 1.0. At 10 percent in canola oil, one study found candelilla, beeswax, rice bran and carnauba statistically equal. In medium chain triglycerides candelilla came last, below beeswax. Another study at 15 percent found beeswax the stronger of the two.
The third measurement is the one balms live in, at 8 to 20 percent wax rather than 1 to 2. So the honest published factor is 0.6 to 1.0, starting at 0.8, confirmed by a test batch. A single multiplier cannot be right, because the answer depends on the loading, the carrier oil and the grade. Doan and colleagues found two grades of carnauba flip from strongest to weakest gelator inside one study, which is a warning against trusting any table, including this one, more than your own two tubes.
The factor, worked in grams
Take a standard beeswax tube balm, by weight: beeswax 15%, shea butter 20%, castor oil 10%, jojoba 25%, sweet almond oil 30%. That totals 100.
- Multiply at 0.8. 15 x 0.8 = 12 percent candelilla. Start at the top of the range and come down, because the equal-loading evidence sits there.
- Return the difference. Three percentage points are free. Give 2 to castor (12%) and 1 to sweet almond (31%), because castor is what buys back the glide you lost.
- Confirm the total. 12 + 20 + 12 + 25 + 31 = 100, by weight.
- Weigh a 40 g trial. Candelilla 4.8 g, shea 8.0 g, castor 4.8 g, jojoba 10.0 g, sweet almond 12.4 g. That is roughly eight 4.25 g tubes with overage.
- Repeat at 0.65 and compare. Two tubes on a bench settle the question for your oil blend in a way no factor can. Judge both at 24 hours, because candelilla keeps firming for a day.

The sensory caveat: glassy, not cushioned
A correctly converted candelilla balm is the right hardness and still feels different. The set is glassier and the break is cleaner. Where a beeswax stick gives slightly under pressure and lays down a soft film, candelilla resists then releases, and the film sits thinner and drier. Some people prefer it. Most describe it as less comforting on a chapped lip.
The compensations are cheap and reliable. Increase castor oil to 10 to 15 percent for cling, gloss and a wetter first impression. Raise the butter fraction by 3 to 5 percentage points, preferring a low-grain butter such as kokum or a well tempered shea. Add 2 to 3 percent cetyl alcohol, which contributes body and slip without adding meaningful hardness. Any one of these usually closes most of the gap; all three together will overshoot into softness.
Temperature changes the verdict as well. Candelilla melts six to ten degrees higher than beeswax, so a candelilla balm needs more skin warmth before it releases product. In a cold room, or straight out of a coat pocket, the first pass can feel like it is doing nothing. Beeswax has a fraction that is already soft below 30 C and starts giving immediately. Much of what gets reported as "too hard" is this, not over-structuring: warm the stick in your hand for ten seconds and try again before you cut the wax.
Convert the wax and the oils in separate test batches. Change the wax first, live with the result for two days, then adjust the oil phase. Doing both at once means you cannot tell which change caused what.
Grades, form and storage
Candelilla is sold as flakes, pellets or a hard cake, in colours from pale cream to yellow-brown. The colour tracks refining: crude cerote is dark and resinous, single-filtered grades are amber, and multiply refined cosmetic grades are near white. For a clear lip balm or a pale tinted product, buy the palest grade you can and expect to pay for it. For a herbal salve or a dark tinted stick, a mid grade is fine and often smells pleasantly of dry hay.
Flakes are the easiest form to weigh and melt. A hard cake needs breaking up, and candelilla is brittle enough to shatter rather than shave, so expect fragments across the bench. It is stable in storage in the same way beeswax is: it has almost nothing in it to oxidise, so a sealed bag in a cool dark cupboard will still be good years later. Keep it away from strong odours, since the resin fraction picks up scent.
One practical difference from beeswax is pigment behaviour. The tighter crystal network and the high alkane content make candelilla formulas hold pigment in suspension well but wet it poorly, so tinted candelilla balms benefit from grinding the colour into castor oil first rather than dumping powder into the melt. The same applies to any powdered active you are dispersing.

My candelilla balm is rock hard and drags
This is the most common complaint about the material, and it has four causes in descending order of likelihood.
- A one to one swap in a formula that was already firm. At balm loadings the two waxes are closer than the folklore says, so this overshoots by less than you have read, but it does overshoot. Recalculate at 0.8 and rebuild the formula to 100 percent.
- No glide oil. A blend of only dry, fast oils under a hard wax reads as drag. Castor at 8 to 12 percent is the standard correction; there is more diagnosis in drag and poor glide.
- Stacked hard waxes. Candelilla plus 3 percent carnauba is two hard waxes fighting each other. Keep total hard wax within one budget rather than adding the second on top.
- Judging it too early or too cold. Candelilla balms firm for 24 hours and are noticeably stiffer straight from a cold room. Test at room temperature after a full day. If it is still wrong, the ladder of corrections is in balm too hard or too soft.
Handling is otherwise undemanding. Candelilla dissolves cleanly in a 70 to 80 C water bath, well within the normal working window, and pours in the same 65 to 72 C range as beeswax for tubes. It sets faster, so work briskly when filling and see pour temperatures if you are getting rough tops.
Vegan status, supply and sustainability
Candelilla is plant derived with no animal input, so it is vegan, and it is the backbone of most commercial vegan lip products. The honest complications are ecological and social rather than dietary. The plant is wild harvested from a fragile desert ecosystem, and Euphorbia antisyphilitica is listed in CITES Appendix II, meaning international trade requires export permits. Harvest is largely done by rural communities in Mexico under ejido land arrangements, and both yield and price swing with rainfall and with how tightly the regulated supply chain is running in a given year.
Two practical consequences. First, expect price volatility and buy a little ahead of a production run. Second, if you make sustainability claims, get documentation from the supplier rather than repeating marketing copy: ask about permits, harvest region and whether the material comes through a recognised community sourcing programme. A wild harvested desert plant is not automatically the greener choice against a beekeeping byproduct, and saying so plainly is better than pretending otherwise.
Where it fits
Candelilla is the right default for any vegan formula and a reasonable choice for anything that needs slightly more heat tolerance than beeswax gives. It is the wrong choice if the product's whole appeal is a soft, cushioned film, and it is not a substitute for carnauba wax where genuine heat resistance is the goal. Can I use candelilla in a salve?
Yes, at 5 to 10 percent by weight instead of the usual 8 to 15 percent beeswax. A salve carries so much liquid oil that the glassier set is barely noticeable, which makes salves the easiest product to convert to candelilla.
