Blended butters: what is really inside aloe, coffee and avocado butter
Most named butters are hydrogenated vegetable oil plus a trace extract. How to read the INCI, melt points of 35 to 42 C, and when a blend is worth buying.
Aloe does not make a butter. Neither does coffee, hemp, olive or avocado: every one of those plants yields either a liquid oil or a water-soluble extract, and neither is solid at 20 C. What a supplier sells you under those names is a hardened vegetable fat carrying a small amount of the named material. That is not a scandal, and some of these blends are genuinely useful, but you are paying butter money for a base fat and you should know which one.
A blended or faux butter is a hydrogenated vegetable fat, usually coconut, palm kernel or a soybean hardstock, plus 2 to 10 percent of the named botanical oil or extract. Typical slip melt is 35 to 42 C, iodine value under 5, and shelf life two years or more. Read the first INCI name: that is what you actually bought.
What "butter" means, and what it does not
"Butter" is not a defined term in cosmetic ingredient law. It is trade shorthand for a fat that is solid and spreadable at room temperature, and nothing stops a supplier applying it to any material that behaves that way. So the word covers three quite different things.
- Native seed fats. Shea, cocoa, mango, kokum, illipe, sal, murumuru, tucuma, cupuacu. The plant made the solid fat itself and pressing is the whole process. These are ranked against each other in butters compared.
- Fractions and processed fats. Palm stearin, cocoa butter substitutes, hydrogenated castor oil. Real single-source materials, but modified after pressing.
- Blends sold under a botanical name. Aloe, coffee, hemp, avocado, olive, monoi, cucumber, mowrah-style blends. A base fat that never came from the named plant, plus a minority component that did.
The third group is what this page is about. The test is simple: if the named plant's oil is liquid at room temperature, or if the named plant gives an aqueous extract rather than a fat at all, then anything solid sold under that name is a blend. Avocado oil, hemp seed oil, coffee seed oil, olive oil and rosehip oil are all liquid at 20 C. Aloe gives a gel, not a fat.
The base that is actually holding the shape
Hydrogenation adds hydrogen across the carbon double bonds in an unsaturated fat, converting oleic, linoleic and linolenic acid to stearic acid. A fully hydrogenated oil is therefore mostly stearic and palmitic acid regardless of what it started as, which is why fully hardened soybean, rapeseed and cottonseed oil all behave alike. The starting oil decides the chain length distribution, and that decides the melting behaviour.

Two routes produce a 35 to 42 C butter. The direct route hardens a fat that was already close, coconut or palm kernel, and gives a material with a narrow melt and a clean, almost waxy break. The blended route takes a 65 to 70 C hardstock at maybe 15 to 30 percent and dissolves it into liquid oil, which gives a softer, more spreadable solid that behaves like a suspension of high-melting crystals in oil. The two feel quite different on the skin even at the same nominal melt point, and the specification sheet will not tell you which you have.
Partial hydrogenation, the process that generates trans fatty acids, is a dietary issue and is being phased out of food oils worldwide. Cosmetic bases are now overwhelmingly fully hydrogenated, which produces very little trans isomer. Topically it is not a safety question either way, but a supplier who cannot say whether the base is fully or partially hydrogenated probably cannot tell you much else about it.
Reading the INCI to find the real percentage
Cosmetic ingredients are declared in descending order of weight down to 1 percent, and in any order below that. A blended butter arrives as a trade material with its components already listed in that order, usually joined by "(and)". The base is almost always first. The botanical is almost always second, and that tells you it is somewhere between just under half the material and just over 1 percent, which is a uselessly wide window on its own. Three things narrow it.
- Bound it with the melt point. If the named component is a liquid oil, every point of it you add drops the melting point of the blend. A butter that still slips at 38 C cannot hold 30 percent avocado oil against a 40 C base. In practice a liquid botanical oil in a firm blended butter sits between 3 and 15 percent, and closer to the bottom of that than the top.
- Look for the 1 percent tell. Anything after a preservative, an antioxidant such as tocopherol, or a colourant is below 1 percent. A named botanical extract listed after tocopherol is a trace.
- Ask, in writing. A supplier who blends the material knows the percentage. Reputable ones state it on the technical data sheet: commonly 3 to 10 percent for a named oil, 0.1 to 5 percent for an extract. The request also belongs in your sourcing routine alongside the certificate of analysis.
The general rules for turning any ingredient list into a rough formula are set out in reading a balm label. They apply to a raw material exactly as they apply to a finished product.
You cannot write "Aloe Butter" on your own ingredient list. It is not an INCI name and no regulator recognises it. You must declare the components the supplier gives you, in their order, which means a supplier who calls the composition proprietary has sold you a material you cannot legally label with. Get the component names before you buy, not after you have poured 200 tins. The pre-market file requirements are in selling balms in the UK and EU.
Five named blends compared
Compositions below are the common commercial patterns, not specifications. Individual suppliers vary, and two materials sold under the same name can differ enough to change a formula.

Hemp butter is the one that misleads most often. Hemp seed oil contains no meaningful cannabidiol, and the blend contains a fraction of hemp seed oil, so the distance between the jar and a cannabinoid product is enormous. If that is what you are after, the material and the law are covered in CBD and hemp extract. Avocado butter is the most defensible of the five, because avocado oil at 10 percent of the blend does contribute something measurable in unsaponifiables and fatty acid profile; the plain oil is assessed in avocado oil.
Why these butters keep so well
Iodine value measures unsaturation: grams of iodine absorbed per 100 g of fat, determined by titration or calculated from the fatty acid profile. Native soybean oil sits at 120 to 143. Fully hydrogenated, it falls below 5, and typical trade material runs 1 to 3. There are almost no double bonds left, and with them go the bis-allylic hydrogens that oxidation attacks first.
The practical consequence is a shelf life of two to three years in a sealed pail at room temperature, against roughly one year for shea and considerably less for a polyunsaturated liquid oil. It does not go rancid in the way described in rancidity and oxidation, because the mechanism needs unsaturation to work on. The stability is not free of a catch: the minority botanical component is usually the unsaturated part, so a blend containing 10 percent hemp seed oil ages at roughly the rate of that 10 percent, not at the rate of the base. Date the pail and store it cool anyway.
The same saturation explains the absence of grain. Shea goes gritty because its stearic fraction recrystallises slowly into a coarser polymorph over weeks, the fault described in grainy shea butter. A fully hydrogenated base has a narrow, simple triglyceride distribution and reaches a stable crystal form quickly, so it sets once and stays there. For anyone who has thrown away a batch of gritty body balm, that alone is worth something.
Costing a blend against buying the parts
The honest way to price a blend is to cost the same composition bought as separates. Absolute prices move and differ by market, so the table uses an index with refined shea butter at 100, from small-quantity trade pricing in the United Kingdom and European Union as at September 2026. Treat the numbers as ratios, not quotations.

The gap is the convenience premium, and on these materials it typically runs 50 to 120 percent. Some of it is real manufacturing work: blending to a target melt point, filtering and holding a specification. But a maker running a 5 kg batch can usually buy hydrogenated palm kernel oil and a botanical oil, blend them at 40 C with a stick blender, and land the same composition at close to half the cost with the percentage under their own control. Run it through the cost calculator before deciding, because the answer flips at small volumes.
If you want the botanical for feel rather than for the label, skip the blend entirely. Ten percent avocado oil in a shea and beeswax balm delivers more avocado oil to the skin than 30 percent avocado butter does, at lower cost, and you keep control of the melt point.
Claim and label risk
Two separate problems arise when a blend is presented as a single botanical.
The first is the ingredient list, and it is mechanical. Your finished balm's list must carry the components in weight order. If aloe butter is 20 percent of your formula and is itself 97 percent coconut oil, then coconut oil is roughly 19.4 percent of your product and the aloe extract is roughly 0.6 percent, and they belong in different places on the list. Suppliers sometimes supply a ready-made "declaration" that helpfully groups them; that grouping is not how a regulator reads it. The EU labelling rules require the components declared individually in descending order.
The second is the marketing claim, and it is the one that costs money. Under the common criteria for cosmetic claims in Commission Regulation (EU) No 655/2013, a claim must be honest, fair and supported by adequate evidence, and the Commission's technical document on claims is explicit that a claim about an ingredient's properties has to relate to the ingredient at the concentration actually used in the finished product. A front label reading "with soothing aloe" on a product containing 0.6 percent aloe extract, when the evidence cited is for aloe gel at far higher levels, is exactly the case that provision addresses. In the United States the analogous exposure is misbranding, and where the wording drifts towards an effect on the body it becomes the drug question set out in cosmetic versus drug claims.
A third, smaller point: "Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil" hides the botanical source, so a blend can quietly break a palm-free promise. If you sell on that basis, get the source oil named in writing, and see palm free balm for the substitution options.
Where blends genuinely earn their place
Strip away the botanical marketing and these are still useful materials, for four reasons that have nothing to do with the name on the tub.
- Predictable melt. Shea's stearic acid content swings from roughly 30 to 45 percent by origin and season, which is why one sack makes a firm balm and the next makes a soft one. A hydrogenated base is specified to a slip melting point and holds it batch to batch. If batch to batch inconsistency is your recurring complaint, this is a real fix.
- No grain, ever. No tempering, no rapid chill, no anxious wait to see what the balm looks like in three weeks.
- Stable, pale colour and no odour. Unrefined shea is beige and smells nutty, cocoa butter is assertively chocolate. A hydrogenated base is white and silent, which is what you want under a delicate fragrance or a precise pigment load.
- Allergen distance. No tree nut source, no latex-adjacent debate, no animal origin. That matters where a customer avoids tree-nut-derived materials, although fully refined and hydrogenated fats carry negligible protein in any case.
What you give up is the unsaponifiable fraction. Shea's 3 to 10 percent unsaponifiables, cupuacu's water-binding behaviour, cocoa's polyphenols: hydrogenation and refining strip most of that character out, and a 5 percent botanical addition does not put it back. If the reason you use butter is the feel of the unsaponifiables, a blend will disappoint you no matter what is on the label. Cupuacu butter and mango and kokum butter are the better answers there.
Swapping a blend for shea or mango
A one-for-one swap by weight almost always stiffens the balm, because the blends melt higher than shea and their crystals form a more efficient network. Shea slips at roughly 32 to 38 C, mango at 32 to 37, and a palm kernel based blend at 35 to 42. The result is a firmer set and a slower melt on the skin.

Judge the result properly rather than by thumb pressure ten minutes after pouring. Give it 24 hours at 20 C and use a repeatable test, as in measuring balm hardness. The underlying quantity you are matching is solid fat at 20 and 30 C, explained in solid fat content, and a butter with more solid fat at 30 C will always feel draggier however you juggle the wax.
The decision rule
Buy a blended butter when you want a white, odourless, grain-free solid with a specified melting point and a long shelf life, and you are prepared to describe it accurately. That is a legitimate reason and there is no substitute for it among native butters.
Buy the base and the botanical separately when cost matters, when you want the botanical above the 5 to 10 percent a blend delivers, or when you need to know exactly what is in your own product. Buy a real seed butter when you want the feel that unsaponifiables give, and accept the variability that comes with it. Never buy a blend in order to get the named plant's activity into a formula: at 5 percent of the butter and 15 percent of the balm, the botanical is at 0.75 percent of the finished product, which is below the level any evidence you might cite was generated at.
The limit on all of this is that none of it is standardised. There is no monograph for aloe butter, no required minimum aloe content, and no obligation on a supplier to keep the composition the same from one lot to the next. Everything above describes what the market usually does, not what it must do. The only authoritative document is the specification for the lot in front of you, which is why the certificate of analysis, the component INCI names and the stated botanical percentage are worth more than any general rule on this page.
Frequently asked questions
What is aloe butter made of?
Almost always coconut oil or hydrogenated coconut oil carrying a small amount of Aloe barbadensis leaf extract, typically between 0.5 and 5 percent. Aloe itself yields a watery gel, not a fat, so a solid aloe butter cannot be a single-ingredient material. Check the supplier's INCI: the first name listed is the base fat that makes up nearly all of it.
Is coffee butter real butter from coffee beans?
No. Green coffee seed oil is liquid at room temperature, so coffee butter is that oil blended into a hydrogenated vegetable fat, usually at 3 to 10 percent. Some versions also carry added coffee fragrance or caffeine. It is a perfectly usable firm butter with a 36 to 42 C melt, but the coffee content is a minor component.
How can I tell if a butter is a blend?
Look at the ingredient list. A single INCI name, such as Butyrospermum Parkii Butter or Mangifera Indica Seed Butter, means a native fat. Two or more names joined by "(and)", or any name beginning with "Hydrogenated", means a blend. As a shortcut, if the named plant's oil is liquid at room temperature, anything solid sold under that name is a blend.
Do blended butters go rancid?
Very slowly. A fully hydrogenated base has an iodine value under 5, meaning almost no double bonds for oxygen to attack, and sealed material commonly keeps two to three years at room temperature. The unsaturated botanical component ages at its own rate, so a blend holding 10 percent hemp seed oil will develop an off note sooner than the base alone would.
Can I put "aloe butter" on my ingredient list?
No. It is not an INCI name and no regulator recognises it. You must declare the components your supplier gives you, in descending order of weight in your finished product, which means the coconut oil and the aloe extract appear in different positions on the list. If a supplier will not disclose the component names, you cannot label the finished product correctly.
Can I substitute a blended butter for shea butter directly?
Swap one for one by weight as a starting point, then expect the balm to come out firmer. Blends melt at 35 to 42 C against shea's 32 to 38, so drop the wax by one or two percentage points or move about three points of butter into liquid oil. Judge the result after 24 hours at room temperature, not immediately after pouring.
Are blended butters worse than real butters?
Not worse, different. They are more consistent, they never go grainy, they are odourless and pale, and they keep for years. What they lack is the unsaponifiable fraction that gives shea, cocoa and cupuacu their characteristic feel, because refining and hydrogenation remove most of it. Choose by which of those properties your formula actually needs.
