Working out the real price per gram of a balm and where the money goes
A stick holds about 4.25 g, so a mid price balm can cost more per gram than one that looks dearer. The raw materials are rarely the expensive part.
A lip balm is one of the few products people buy repeatedly without ever knowing how much of it they are getting. The pack rarely leads with a weight, the containers come in incompatible units, and the difference between a cheap stick and an expensive tin is far smaller in grams than it looks on the shelf. This page does the arithmetic, then follows the money from the till back to the wax.
Divide the price by the filled weight in grams, not by the container's stated capacity. A standard twist-up stick holds about 4.25 g, so a stick at 1.60 pounds costs about 38p a gram, while a 15 ml tin holds only 12 to 13.5 g of balm rather than 15. The fats inside a 4.25 g stick cost a maker roughly 3p at trade prices in 2026.
The only conversion that matters
Price per gram is price divided by the mass of balm in the pack. Two things routinely go wrong with that.
The first is dividing by the container's capacity instead of its contents. A tin sold as 15 ml is describing the volume of the empty tin to the brim, which is a manufacturing specification for the tin, not a statement about what is in it. The second is comparing across formats without noticing that a stick is sold by weight and a pot is often sold by volume, so the two numbers are not the same kind of number at all.
Get the weight and the arithmetic is trivial. A stick at 1.60 pounds holding 4.25 g works out at 37.6p a gram. A tin at 11.00 pounds holding 13 g works out at 84.6p a gram, so it is roughly two and a quarter times dearer per gram despite feeling like the more generous purchase. Neither figure tells you whether either product is any good, which is a separate question tackled at do expensive balms work better. It tells you what a gram costs, which is the first thing worth knowing.
Standard fill weights, and why millilitres flatter a pot
Balm is less dense than water. Refined vegetable oils sit at about 0.91 to 0.92 g per millilitre at 20 C under the Codex specification for named vegetable oils, and solid beeswax at about 0.96, so a normal wax and oil blend lands a little under 0.92 g per millilitre once set. Multiply a container's millilitres by 0.92, then take off the headspace nobody fills, and the delivered weight is consistently below the number on the tin.

The practical effect is that buying by millilitres overstates the value of every pot by roughly eight to fifteen percent against every stick. It is not a trick, it is two labelling conventions colliding, but it is systematic and it always runs the same way. Finding the declared weight, and when there is not one
Under the EU Cosmetic Products Regulation, and the retained UK version of it, the nominal content at the time of packaging must appear on the pack by weight or by volume. There is an exemption, and it is exactly the size of a lip balm: packs containing less than five grams or five millilitres do not have to declare content at all. A 4.25 g stick is legally allowed to tell you nothing about how much balm is in it, which is why so many of them do not.
In the United States the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act and 21 CFR 701.13 require a net quantity of contents statement on the principal display panel, expressed in both US customary and metric units, which is why American sticks carry "net wt 0.15 oz (4.25 g)" and European ones frequently carry nothing. If you are comparing an imported product with a domestic one, the American pack is usually the one that gives you the number.
When there is no declared weight, weigh it. A kitchen scale reading to 0.1 g will do: weigh the sealed pack, use the balm up, weigh the empty container and cap, and subtract. Do it once for a product you buy regularly and you have a figure you can reuse for years. It also settles arguments about whether a "value" multipack really is one.
Two labelling details are worth knowing while you are looking. The "e" mark beside a weight is the European average quantity system, meaning the batch averages the stated fill rather than every unit meeting it exactly, so a specific pack may be a fraction light. And a weight given for a filled unit is the balm plus nothing else: it never includes the tube. Everything else on the pack is covered at reading a balm label.
What the fats in a lip balm actually cost
Raw material prices for balm ingredients are public, and the arithmetic to get from a price per kilogram to pence per stick is one multiplication per line. The formula below is a conventional lip stick: 15 percent beeswax, 20 percent refined shea, 8 percent castor, 56.9 percent high oleic sunflower and 0.1 percent mixed tocopherols, totalling 100.

About three pence. At hobby quantities the same stick costs roughly 5p in materials, and at 25 kg drum prices roughly 2p. That entire span, from the most expensive way to buy the ingredients to the cheapest, is three pence on a product that retails for one to twelve pounds.
The consequence is that ingredient upgrades barely move the cost. Replacing beeswax with candelilla for a vegan stick costs a fraction of a penny, because candelilla is dearer per gram but is used at about two thirds the inclusion rate. Switching refined shea butter to unrefined adds around 0.17p. Even jojoba, the most expensive oil most people put in a lip balm, would add under 2p if it replaced the sunflower entirely. Any brand telling you that its price reflects the cost of its botanicals is describing pennies. Where the rest of a four pound shelf price goes
If the balm is three pence, the other 397 are doing something else. The reconstruction below is built from published packaging trade prices and conventional retail and distribution margins. It is arithmetic, not anybody's accounts, and any individual brand will differ, but the shape is reliable: the two largest lines are almost always tax and the retailer.

Read the last two rows together. The empty tube, cap, label and band cost roughly six times what goes inside them, and the printed carton on its own costs twice the balm. That is not a scandal, it is what happens when you package four grams of anything, and the same ratio shows up in the trade prices at every order quantity in the packaging guide.
VAT makes cross-border price comparison unreliable. A UK shelf price includes 20 percent tax, EU rates vary by country, and a US shelf price usually excludes sales tax entirely, which is added at the till at a rate that depends on the state. Compare ex-tax prices, or accept that a US sticker price is not measuring the same thing.
What extra money can genuinely buy
Some of the price difference between a cheap and an expensive balm corresponds to something you could in principle measure. Not much of it, but some.
- More balm. The largest single lever and the one nobody advertises. A round 15 mm tube holds 5.5 to 6 g against an oval stick's 4.25 g, which is 30 percent more product for a container that costs the maker about the same.
- Fresh, low peroxide oils. Peroxide value is a real measurement in milliequivalents of oxygen per kilogram, and Codex sets a limit of 10 for refined oils. Oil bought fresh, stored cold and protected with tocopherol makes a balm that still tastes clean at nine months. Oil bought as a bargain lot does not. You cannot see this on a label, but it is the difference the mechanism at rancidity and oxidation describes.
- Unrefined butter, if the point is the unsaponifiables. Unrefined shea costs about 25 to 35 percent more per gram than refined and carries more of the minor fraction, at the cost of a distinct smell and a greater tendency to grain. It is a real difference. It is worth pennies.
- A tube that works. Mechanism quality, wall thickness and cap fit are where cheap packaging shows: a barrel that cracks in a pocket, a screw that strips, a disc that lets molten balm past. The commonest failure, and what it costs you in balm, is documented at lip balm tubes leaking.
- Sealed or airless packaging on jars. For a large pot used with fingers over months, reduced headspace and no finger contact genuinely slow oxidation and contamination. On a 4 g stick, which is used up in weeks, it buys nothing.
- Sun protection that was actually tested. An SPF claim requires testing to a recognised method, and that testing is a real cost the product has to carry. What the number means on lips specifically is at lip balm with SPF.
What extra money reliably does not buy
The rest of the premium is the marketing line in the table above, wearing different clothes.
- Botanicals below the one percent line. Ingredients present at one percent or less may be listed in any order after those above one percent, which is why exotic extracts cluster at the end of a list. A 0.1 percent extract in a 4.25 g stick is four milligrams of material, applied twenty milligrams at a time. It costs the maker a fraction of a penny and does nothing detectable, whatever the plant is.
- Hydration claims in a water-free product. A balm contains no water, so it cannot deliver any. It reduces water loss, which is a different mechanism, explained at occlusive, emollient, humectant. Humectants such as glycerin need water to work with and can behave awkwardly in an anhydrous stick, as covered at glycerin and humectants.
- The outer carton. Foiling, embossing and a rigid box add real cost, all of it discarded before first use. Every penny of the six in that row is spent on a shelf presence, not on your lips.
- Clean and chemical free positioning. Neither phrase has a regulated meaning, and the reasoning is unpicked at chemical free and clean beauty claims.
- Vitamin infusions at trace levels. Tocopherol at 0.1 percent is an antioxidant protecting the oils, which is worth having and costs 0.03p. It is not a vitamin dose for your skin, and neither is anything else at that inclusion rate.
Three products, priced properly

Three things fall out of that table. The pharmacy tube is dearer per gram than the supermarket stick despite holding more than twice as much, so size alone is not value. The boutique tin is punished twice, once on price per gram and again on dose, because finger application from an open pot puts down more balm than a stick pass does. And petrolatum from a 100 g tub is an order of magnitude cheaper per use than anything else on the shelf, which is worth knowing even if you would rather have something that smells nicer.
A multipack is only cheaper if you finish it. Balms built on unstable seed oils have a working life of six to twelve months once opened, and an unopened stick left in a drawer for two years is not a saving. Buy the quantity you will use inside the period after opening, which is the point of how long does a balm last.
Cost per application, and where this arithmetic stops
The decision rule is that cost per application beats cost per unit and beats cost per gram, because how much you use varies more than what you pay. Within any one format, price per gram across the market spans maybe two to threefold. Consumption spans far more than that: dose per application runs from about 10 mg for a single light pass to 35 mg for a heavy overnight layer, and frequency runs from twice a day to a dozen times, which is a twentyfold range in grams consumed per week. The figures behind that are at how much balm to apply. If you are getting through a stick a fortnight, the format and the habit are costing you more than the brand is.
Three honest limits on everything above. The prices are 2026 UK bands and they will drift, particularly the material costs, which move with harvest, currency and the honey year. The dose figures are estimates bracketed by known fill weights and reported tube lifetimes rather than published measurements, so treat them as good enough for comparison and not as data. And price per gram measures quantity, not performance: a balm that holds for four hours at 40p a gram is better value than one that needs reapplying hourly at 20p, and none of this arithmetic can tell you which is which. How do I work out the price per gram of a lip balm?

Are expensive lip balms worth the money?

Extra money can buy more balm, fresher oils, better packaging and tested sun protection. It cannot buy a meaningful dose of a botanical present at a fraction of one percent.
What is the cheapest lip balm per gram?
Plain petrolatum from a 100 g tub, by a wide margin: around 2.5p a gram against 38p or more for a stick, because you are not paying for a tube, a carton or a brand. It is not a like-for-like swap, since a tub is less portable and less hygienic in a pocket, but as a nightly occlusive at home it is very hard to beat on cost.
Does a 15 ml tin contain 15 g of balm?
No. Millilitres describe the empty tin's capacity to the brim. A wax and oil balm has a density of about 0.92 g per millilitre, and tins are filled short of the rim so the lid seats cleanly, so a 15 ml tin typically delivers 12 to 13.5 g. Comparing pots by volume against sticks by weight overstates the pot by roughly eight to fifteen percent.
Is a bigger pack always better value?
Not always, and not if you cannot finish it. A pharmacy tube holding 10 g can cost more per gram than a supermarket stick holding 4.25 g. Larger packs also have to survive longer, and balms built on unstable oils have a working life of six to twelve months once opened, so an unused half of a multipack is not a saving.
