Vegan body balm: converting an 8 percent beeswax body formula to plant wax
A vegan body balm on candelilla and rice bran wax, the conversion arithmetic from beeswax, a 120 ml jar, a 68 to 74 C pour and the cushion loss fixed.
The substitution factors published for beeswax were mostly worked out on lip products, and a body balm is a different problem: ten times the dose, a tenth of the film thickness, spread over an arm instead of pressed onto a lip. Convert an 8% beeswax body formula with a lip balm factor and you get something that is technically the right hardness and still feels wrong. This page gives the arithmetic, a formula that totals 100, and the compensations that make a plant wax body balm feel like a balm rather than like a coating.
Replace 8% beeswax with about 5% candelilla, or about 6% rice bran wax. The formula below splits the difference at 4% candelilla plus 2% rice bran, with castor at 8% to put back the cushion plant waxes do not have. Melt at 82 to 85 C so the rice bran clears, pour 120 mL jars at 68 to 74 C, cool fast and cure 24 hours.
Why a body balm converts differently from a lip balm
Three things change when the same wax swap moves from a tube to a jar.
The dose is larger. A lip application is perhaps 10 mg; a hand and forearm takes 0.5 to 1 g. Anything that reads as a slight peculiarity in a lip film is presented to the skin fifty to a hundred times over on a body, and the material stops being a detail.
The film is thinner and much wider. A lip balm lays down tens of microns onto a small, warm, occluded surface. A body balm is spread until it disappears, which means a film of a few microns over a large area of cooler skin that never reaches the temperature at which a high melting wax softens. Wax that stayed pleasantly plastic on a lip stays solid on a shin.
And the balm is judged on spread rather than hardness. A lip stick has to hold itself up in a tube, so hardness is the constraint and you convert to match it. A body balm has to yield under a fingertip and then thin out under a palm, so excess wax does not read as "firm", it reads as drag. That single difference is why the factor you should start from is not the one a lip formula uses.
The conversion arithmetic
Workshop substitution factors for candelilla span 0.6 to 1.0 times the beeswax weight, which is a wide band because the number depends on what you are holding constant. Match the hardness of a lip stick and you land near the top of it. Match the spread of a body balm and you land near the bottom, because past about 5% a body balm starts to skid instead of spreading and you are pushing product around with a warm palm rather than laying it down.

Run the same arithmetic for a different starting percentage or a different wax pair with the wax substitution calculator rather than by hand, and treat whatever comes out as a first test batch. Candelilla varies between suppliers more than beeswax does, and rice bran varies by grade, so the factor is a place to start measuring from. The formula
Weight percent of the finished batch, totalling exactly 100. A 500 g batch fills four 120 mL jars at 110 g each, using the working density of a set balm at about 0.92 g/mL, and leaves roughly 60 g for jug losses, top-ups and a small test tin. Multiply any percentage by 5 for grams.

Tocopherol sits at 0.1% because the measured optimum for alpha-tocopherol in an oil is around 100 parts per million, above which it starts to behave as a pro-oxidant. The working range for a mixed concentrate is 0.05 to 0.2%, and the evidence is in vitamin E and antioxidants. Scent is left out; if you add essential oil, take the points off the sunflower and stay inside 1 to 2% for an adult body product.
Why the wax is split, and why it comes to 6 rather than 5
A straight conversion of 8% beeswax gives 5% candelilla. This formula runs 6% total wax, and the extra point is not a rounding error.
Two percent rice bran wax is worth roughly 1.7% of candelilla in structuring terms, so 4 plus 2 is about 5.7 candelilla-equivalent, a little over half a point above the straight swap. That surplus is there because the rest of the formula got softer. A conventional 8% beeswax body balm typically carries around 34% butters plus a few percent of starch as an absorbent; this one carries 30% butters and no starch, because starch and plant wax together give a finish most people describe as powdery. Firmness in a balm comes from total solid content, not from wax alone, so removing four points of solid fat has to be paid for somewhere.
The split itself is about what the two waxes are good at. Candelilla softens at 68.5 to 72.5 C by the NF melting range and gives a network with some give in it. Rice bran wax melts at 75 to 84 C depending on grade, crystallises as a dense mat of fine needles, and holds liquid oil in place better than beeswax does, which is exactly what a 64% oil phase needs if it is not to bead out in a warm room. Using either one alone works: candelilla alone at 5% sweats slightly in summer, and rice bran alone at 6% sets glassy and drags. The mechanism behind both is the crystal habit rather than the melting point, and it is worked through in oleogels and wax networks.
Do not carry the wax total up further to compensate for a converted formula feeling thin. Thin and draggy are opposite faults with the same instinctive fix, and adding wax to a balm that actually lacks cushion makes it worse in both directions: more drag on application and a heavier film afterwards. Fix cushion with castor and butter, hardness with wax, and change one of them per batch.
Restoring the cushion plant waxes take away
Beeswax has a hydrocarbon fraction of roughly a quarter alongside its esters, and part of it is still soft at skin temperature. That is what the hand reads as cushion and slight cling. Candelilla and rice bran are far purer materials with nothing in them to plasticise the set, so a like-for-like conversion feels drier and squeakier even when a penetrometer says the two are the same hardness. Three levers put it back, in order of effect:
- Castor at 8%. Roughly two and a half times what a beeswax body balm needs. Castor oil is 85 to 90% ricinoleic acid and its viscosity and slight tack are the closest thing available to what beeswax contributed. Past about 10% in a body product it starts to feel sticky on a large area rather than cushioned.
- A softer butter mix. Twenty percent shea against 10% mango rather than the reverse. Shea has the widest melting range of the common butters, so part of it is liquid at skin temperature and it carries the melt-on-contact quality that a dry wax removes. Mango is there to keep the crystal population uniform and hold the grain risk down.
- A dry ester at 14%. Counter-intuitive, since caprylic/capric triglyceride is the least cushioned thing in the formula. It works because cushion is judged during application and greasiness is judged for twenty minutes afterwards. The ester lets you keep the castor high without the balm ever feeling heavy, which is the trade discussed in greasy heavy afterfeel.
What you cannot do is replace beeswax with a single vegan material that has its exact sensory profile. Nothing on the plant side does, and the honest position is that a converted balm is a different product tuned to feel equally good, not the same product with one ingredient swapped. Method, and the narrower pour window
- Weigh phase A into one jug. Both waxes, both butters and all four liquid oils, tared between additions on a scale reading to 0.1 g. Keep the tocopherol back.
- Melt at 82 to 85 C. In a water bath, held until the melt is completely clear. Rice bran wax will not clear in the 75 to 80 C bath a beeswax formula uses, and undissolved wax at this stage becomes specks and grit in the jar. Do not run above 90 C.
- Hold five minutes after the last fleck goes. Shea is polymorphic, and every crystal has to be destroyed or the balm will grain. This is the commonest cause of a sandy finish, covered in grainy shea butter.
- Set test. A teaspoon on a cold saucer for two minutes, then press it. Too hard, add 10 to 15 g of sunflower oil. Too soft, add 3 to 5 g of candelilla and remelt.
- Cool to below 60 C for the tocopherol. Off the heat, stirring continuously so the higher melting wax does not start setting against the jug wall.
- Pour at 68 to 74 C. Into dry jars on a level tray, in one movement per jar. The window is narrower than for beeswax and it closes from the top.
- Cool fast, cure 24 hours. Twenty minutes in the fridge, not the freezer, then room temperature. Cap only once the jars are cold, or condensation forms under the lid.
The pour band deserves the emphasis. A beeswax body balm is poured at 60 to 68 C, comfortably above beeswax's 62 to 65 C setting range at the top and forgiving at the bottom. Here the rice bran wax begins to crystallise as soon as the melt drops through the mid seventies, so by 68 C the batch is already carrying crystal nuclei and by 65 C it is visibly thickening in the jug. Pour under 68 C and the jar surfaces go lumpy and matte; pour over about 76 C and shrinkage is deep enough to dish the centre and craze the surface as it sets. Between those, work quickly and do not let the jug stand. The general physics is in pour temperatures.
An 85 C melt is hotter than most balm work and it clings to skin. Use a jug with a real handle, keep the water bath shallow, and never carry an open jug across a room. Check the jars too: a hot pour into thin PET can distort the rim enough to stop the lid sealing, which is the sort of failure covered in packaging compatibility. Glass and polypropylene take 74 C without complaint.
The film that stays: the real problem at body dose
The distinguishing complaint about vegan body balms is not hardness, greasiness or scent. It is that the product seems to sit on the skin for longer than it should, and people describe it as waxy.
The mechanism is straightforward. Candelilla softens above 68 C and rice bran above 75 C, while skin sits at 32 to 34 C, so neither wax ever comes close to melting on the body. A beeswax film does not melt either, but a good part of beeswax stays plastic at skin temperature, so the film deforms with the skin and stops being noticeable within a few minutes. A high melting plant wax film is a rigid solid at 33 C. It thins as you rub it and then it stays, mechanically intact, until it is worn or washed off. On a lip that is barely detectable across a 10 mg dose. Over a forearm at 0.5 g it is what the wearer notices.
Two consequences follow that are worth stating plainly. The film scatters light slightly, so it can leave a faint matte cast that shows most on deeper skin tones and least on pale ones, and it is a genuine formulation fault rather than a matter of taste. And it makes application technique matter: this balm rewards a small quantity warmed between the palms, and punishes the amount you would use of a lotion.
The fixes, in order: drop the rice bran wax from 2% to 1% and give the point to the candelilla, which lowers the softening point of the film; raise the caprylic/capric triglyceride, which thins the film and speeds its disappearance; and if it still shows, take the total wax to 5% and accept a softer jar. What does not work is more butter, which makes the film thicker.
Auditing the rest of the formula
Taking the beeswax out is the visible step and it is rarely the last one. Body balms in particular carry animal materials that a lip balm would not, because the category grew out of tallow and lanolin salves.

Two of these catch people out repeatedly. Lanolin is one of the most effective occlusives available and there is no plant material with its behaviour, so a vegan reformulation has to accept a different feel rather than a substitution. And tocopherol is the ingredient nobody checks, because the label says a plant name: the tocopherol itself is plant-derived, but the carrier oil, the diluent and, in dry forms, the encapsulating material are separate questions to put to the supplier. If the product is going to be sold as vegan, the claim has to be evidenced down to that level, which is the point of vegan and cruelty free labels.

What to change first
Make it at 250 g before you make it at 500, use it daily for a fortnight, and change one number at a time afterwards. The order that saves the most batches is: get the spread right with the wax total, then the cushion with castor and the shea to mango ratio, then the afterfeel with the ester, then scent. Doing it in the other direction means every change alters the thing you judged the last one on.
Be clear about the limits too. This formula is tuned for a temperate room: at 30 C ambient a 6% wax jar softens noticeably, and the honest answer there is a point more candelilla rather than carnauba, which buys heat tolerance at the cost of the drag you have just spent three batches removing. It is anhydrous, so it slows water loss from skin that is already damp and does nothing for skin that is not. And the conversion factors are starting points from bench practice rather than constants: two candelilla samples from different suppliers can differ by enough to move the finished hardness a full step, which is why the beeswax version at body balm is the reference to compare against rather than a target to hit exactly.
Frequently asked questions
How much candelilla wax replaces beeswax in a body balm?
About 0.6 to 0.7 times the beeswax weight, so 8% beeswax becomes roughly 5% candelilla. That is lower than the factor used for lip balms, where 0.8 is a common starting point, because a lip stick is converted to match hardness in a tube while a body balm is judged on how it spreads. Excess wax in a jar reads as drag rather than firmness.
Why does my vegan body balm feel waxy?
Candelilla softens above 68 C and rice bran wax above 75 C, so neither comes near melting at a skin temperature of 32 to 34 C. Beeswax stays partly plastic there, so its film deforms and disappears; a plant wax film stays rigid until it is worn off. Cut the highest melting wax, raise a light ester, and apply less.
Can I use rice bran wax on its own?
Yes, at around 6% in place of 8% beeswax, but expect a glassy set and more drag, and expect to melt at 82 to 85 C because rice bran wax will not clear in the 75 to 80 C bath most balm formulas use. Blending it with candelilla at roughly two parts candelilla to one part rice bran gives a better balance of plasticity and oil binding.
Is shea butter vegan?
Yes. Shea, mango, cocoa, kokum and murumuru are all seed or kernel fats with nothing animal-derived in them. The materials that quietly break a vegan claim in a body balm are beeswax, lanolin, tallow-derived stearic acid or glycerin, silk protein, honey and propolis, shark-derived squalene, and the carrier or capsule material used for some vitamin E.

Why is my converted balm sweating oil?
The wax network is not holding a 64% oil phase, which usually happens when candelilla is the only structurant or when the conversion cut the wax too far. Rice bran wax binds oil better than beeswax does, so keeping it at 2% generally solves it. Slow cooling makes it worse, so chill the filled jars for twenty minutes rather than leaving them out.
Does a vegan body balm keep as long as a beeswax one?
Shelf life is set by the oils, not the wax. Both candelilla and rice bran wax have iodine values low enough that they have little to oxidise, so they keep for years. A high-oleic sunflower, jojoba and caprylic/capric base gives roughly 12 to 18 months. Anhydrous balms need no preservative but they do go rancid.
