Body balm: the 5 to 12% wax window, a whipped variant and how to scale it
A poured body balm formula and a whipped body butter, with the correct wax window, greasiness control, scent loading and a 500 g scale-up.
A body balm is the easiest product on this site to make and the easiest to make badly, because the failure mode is not dramatic. It sets, it looks fine, and then it is greasy for twenty minutes, grainy after a week and soup in August. All three are fixable, and none of them are fixed by the lever most people reach for first, which is wax.
Use 5 to 12% wax, 20 to 40% butters and 50 to 70% liquid oils by weight, melting at 75 to 80 C and pouring tins at 60 to 68 C. Around 8% beeswax gives a firm scoopable tin balm. A whipped body butter uses the same fats with little or no wax, and is aerated rather than set.
Body balm against body butter, honestly
These are different objects, and the word "butter" on a jar usually means the wax was left out. A balm is a set solid: wax crystallises into a continuous network that traps the liquid oil, so the product holds shape well above room temperature and gives way under pressure. A whipped butter has no such network. It is solid only because shea and mango are solid at room temperature, and the whipping stage beats air into that soft crystal mass. The wax window, and why 8% is the useful default
A body balm covers a large area of skin, so spread matters more than hardness. That is why its wax window sits at 5 to 12%, lower than a lip tube at 10 to 20%. Below 5% the product slumps and separates. Above 12% you get drag: the balm skids rather than spreads and you end up pushing it around with a warm palm. Eight percent beeswax in a tin is firm enough to hold a clean surface and soft enough to lift with a fingertip in a cool room.
Wax choice changes the number. Candelilla is harder at equal weight, so substitute at roughly 0.6 to 0.7 times the beeswax weight, meaning 8% beeswax becomes about 5.5% candelilla. Carnauba is harder still and adds noticeable drag, so keep it to 1 to 3% as a hardness top-up rather than a main structurant. The full hierarchy is in waxes compared.
Formula 1: poured tin body balm, 300 g
All percentages are weight percent of the finished batch and total exactly 100. This 300 g batch fills five 2 oz (60 mL) tins at 54 g each (270 g), leaving 30 g of overage (10%) for what stays in the jug and for topping up centre dips. Multiply any percentage by 3 for grams. Mixed tocopherols sit at 0.1% because the measured optimum for alpha-tocopherol in an oil is about 100 parts per million, above which it turns pro-oxidant. Method
- Weigh everything cold. Beeswax, both butters and all four liquid oils into a heatproof jug on a scale reading to 0.1 g. Hold back the starch, the tocopherol and the essential oil.
- Melt at 75 to 80 C. In a water bath. Shea is polymorphic, so hold at 75 to 80 C (167 to 176 F) for five minutes after the last wax fleck disappears. Every crystal has to be destroyed or the balm will grain. Do not exceed 85 C.
- Sift in the starch. Straight into the hot melt, through a small sieve, stirring until there is not a lump left. Tipping it in unsifted gives permanent white specks.
- Set test. A teaspoon on a saucer from the fridge, two minutes, then press it. Too hard, add 6 to 9 g of almond oil. Too soft, add 3 to 6 g of beeswax and remelt.
- Cool to 55 to 60 C, then scent. Off the heat, stirring. Add tocopherol and essential oil and stir thirty seconds. Anything added above 60 C loses its top notes.
- Pour at 60 to 68 C. Into dry tins on a level tray. Too hot and the centres dip and crack as they shrink, too cool and the surface goes lumpy.
- Cool fast, cure slow. Cold water bath or twenty minutes in the fridge, not the freezer, then room temperature for a few hours before capping. Warm lids trap condensation.
Formula 2: whipped body butter, 300 g
Same fats, different physics. This one has 3% beeswax, which is enough to slow the collapse without killing the aeration. Because whipping cuts the density to roughly 0.75 g/mL, 300 g fills about three 4 oz (120 mL) jars at 90 g each rather than the 105 to 112 g a poured product would take.

Melt and hold at 75 to 80 C exactly as above, sift the starch in, then chill fast to 18 to 22 C until it is opaque and thick with the edges setting. Whip on medium in two or three bursts of two to three minutes, resting five minutes between, and add the scent in the last burst. One long continuous whipping run warms the bowl by friction, melts the crystals you are trying to trap air against, and produces a dense greasy paste instead of a mousse.
Why whipped products grain and collapse
Both faults come from the same source: shea butter is roughly 30 to 45% stearic acid and it is polymorphic, meaning the same fat can crystallise into several different forms. Melt it partly, cool it slowly, and the stearic fraction migrates and grows into large crystals you can feel as sand. That is why the hold at 75 to 80 C and the fast chill are not optional, and it is the whole subject of grainy shea butter. A whipped butter is more vulnerable simply because it is 45% shea rather than 22%.
Collapse is mechanical. The air is held by fat crystals that soften long before the butter reaches its 32 to 38 C melting range. Somewhere around 26 to 28 C the network loosens, the bubbles rise out, and the volume drops by up to a third before it resets as a dense solid. It is still usable. It is just no longer whipped, and no amount of reformulating within the butter-only category prevents it. The only real fix is wax, which is to say making a balm instead. How to adjust it
- Too firm to scoop: drop beeswax from 8% to 6% and add the 2% to the almond oil. Below 5% expect slumping in a warm room.
- Slumps in summer: raise beeswax to 10 or 11%, out of the liquid oil, or swap it for 6 to 7% candelilla.
- Greasy for too long: replace the almond oil with caprylic/capric triglyceride or squalane and raise the starch from 4% to 5 or 6%.
- Grainy after a week: cut shea from 22% to 12% and take mango up to 22%, or use kokum, which is the most uniform of the common butters.
- Not rich enough for very dry skin: take butters from 34% to 40% total, out of the liquid oil, and add 3% lanolin if tack is acceptable.
- Vegan and beeswax-free: 5.5% candelilla replaces the 8% beeswax, with the 2.5% difference going back into the oil phase.
Absorption, greasiness and the starch question
Greasiness is a function of the liquid oils, not the wax. Fast oils spread thin and sink quickly: caprylic/capric triglyceride, squalane, apricot kernel and jojoba all leave the surface within a few minutes. Slow, heavy oils sit: olive, avocado, castor and to a lesser extent almond. If a balm feels like it never absorbs, swap 15 to 25% of the formula from the second group to the first before touching anything else. Carrier oils compared sets out the trade-off, which is real: the fast oils are usually the more expensive ones.
Starch is the second lever. At 2 to 5% of the total, a fine starch absorbs oil at the skin surface and converts a greasy finish into a silky one. Tapioca starch has the finest particle and the driest, most powdery slip, and it is what most commercial "dry touch" balms use. Arrowroot is close behind and easier to buy. Cornstarch works but has a slightly larger particle, can clump if it is not sifted, and some makers avoid it on cosmetic-grade grounds. Above about 6% any of them start to feel chalky and can drag. Always sift into the hot oil phase and stir until smooth.
Scent loading, and the limits
Total essential oil goes at 1 to 2% of the batch for healthy adult skin, 0.5 to 1% for over 65s and sensitive skin, and lower again for young children. In this 300 g batch, 1.5% is 4.5 g. That is the general ceiling, not a per-material one: several individual materials are restricted well below it in leave-on products under the IFRA standards, so check each one rather than assuming the blend is fine because the total is. Add below 60 C, since anything hotter drives off the volatile top notes you paid for. The detail is in essential oils in balms.
Melt in a water bath and keep the jug below 85 C: hot fat burns badly and sticks. Patch test any new formula on the inner forearm for 24 hours. Citrus oils can be photosensitising unless they are the furocoumarin-free grade, so keep them out of a product used before sun exposure. A body balm is a cosmetic. It moisturises and it supports the skin barrier physically, and it does not treat eczema, psoriasis or any other condition.
Scaling to 500 g for gifting or a market stall
Multiply every percentage by 5. A 500 g batch fills eight 2 oz tins at 54 g (432 g) and leaves about 68 g, roughly 14%, for pot losses and for topping up dipped surfaces. That overage is deliberately higher than the 10% on a 300 g batch, because at larger volumes more product clings to a bigger jug and the melt cools while you are still pouring.
Three things change at this scale. The melt takes noticeably longer to reach 75 C, so allow a real hold at temperature rather than trusting the clock. The pour window closes fast, so line all the tins up first, work from a jug with a spout, and reheat gently rather than pouring at 55 C into the last few tins. And cooling is slower in a large mass, which raises the graining risk, so get the filled tins into the fridge promptly. What to make first
Make the poured formula at 8% wax, in tins, and live with it for two weeks before changing anything. Most people then find they want one adjustment, not five: usually faster oils, occasionally 1% more wax. Whipped butter is worth making once, mainly so you understand what you are giving up, and it is a poor product to sell in summer or to post.
