Macadamia oil: the palmitoleic oil that feels like skin lipid

Macadamia oil carries 16 to 23 percent palmitoleic acid, 55 to 65 percent oleic and an iodine value of 70 to 80. Use at 10 to 40 percent and the cushion it adds.

Macadamia oil earns shelf space for one compositional reason: it carries 16 to 23 percent palmitoleic acid, a monounsaturated C16 that almost no other pressed seed oil supplies in quantity. The rest of it is ordinary, an oleic-dominant, low-polyunsaturate oil of medium weight. Which macadamia is in the bottle

Commercial macadamia nuts come from Macadamia integrifolia, the smooth-shelled species, from Macadamia tetraphylla, the rough-shelled one, and from hybrids of the two grown in Australia, South Africa, Kenya, Hawaii and Guatemala. The kernels hold roughly 72 to 78 percent oil, which is why the oil is a byproduct of the edible nut trade rather than a crop in its own right: undersized and off-grade kernels go to the press.

The label complication is that the INCI name you will most often see is Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil. M. ternifolia is a third species with small, bitter kernels that is not pressed commercially at any scale. Both Macadamia Integrifolia Seed Oil and Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil are listed cosmetic ingredient names, and the ternifolia entry is largely a historical naming artefact carried forward on data sheets. Ask the supplier which species the certificate of analysis declares and put that name on your list rather than copying whichever one appeared in a formulation you found. The fatty acid profile and the number that matters

No Codex identity standard covers macadamia, so these are the bands that supplier specifications and published analyses agree on, not a legal spec. Index is linoleic plus twice linolenic, a proxy for oxidation-prone bis-allylic sites.

Read that table as a stability statement first. Between 75 and 85 percent of the oil is monounsaturated, and monounsaturated chains have no bis-allylic hydrogen, the position that starts an autoxidation chain. That is why macadamia keeps like a high-oleic oil while feeling nothing like one: the C16:1 fraction is shorter than oleic, so the oil stays fluid and spreads further before it thickens, but it brings no extra oxidation risk with it. Identity values worth checking on a certificate

Typical commercial specification values for cosmetic grade macadamia oil. These come from supplier specifications and published compositional work rather than a pharmacopoeia or Codex monograph, so treat them as the range a good batch falls in, not as pass or fail limits.

The iodine value is the one to ask for. At 70 to 80 macadamia sits below olive and below high-oleic sunflower, and roughly half the figure for standard sunflower. If a batch arrives with an iodine value near 90 it is not macadamia, or not only macadamia. The reason that number tracks shelf life is set out in rancidity and oxidation.

Palmitoleic acid and the sebum argument

The claim you will read everywhere is that macadamia oil resembles human sebum because both are rich in palmitoleic acid. The first half is true, the second half is not quite, and the difference is worth understanding because it changes what you can honestly say on a label.

Human sebum is unusually rich in a C16:1 monounsaturate, but the dominant one is sapienic acid, cis-6-hexadecenoic acid, made by a delta-6 desaturase acting on palmitic acid in the sebaceous gland. Sapienic acid is essentially unique to human sebum, and it makes up a substantial share of sebaceous fatty acids in adults. Macadamia's C16:1 is palmitoleic acid, cis-9-hexadecenoic acid. Same chain length, same single double bond, different position on the chain. They are positional isomers, and a gas chromatograph that is not set up to resolve them reports one C16:1 peak, which is how a genuine resemblance in bulk composition became a claim of identity.

Note

Sebum is not barrier lipid. The stratum corneum's permeability barrier is built from ceramides, cholesterol and long chain free fatty acids in ordered lamellae, none of which macadamia supplies. So what can you say? That macadamia's fatty acid distribution is closer to skin surface lipid than most vegetable oils are, that it spreads and sinks in quickly rather than sitting as a film, and that it is stable. What you cannot say is that it replaces, restores or mimics your skin's own oil, or that being sebum-like is a benefit in itself. It is not obviously a benefit: sebum is the substrate that Malassezia and the skin's resident bacteria feed on, which is why the sebum-similarity framing points in the wrong direction for anyone following malassezia safe balms. How it feels, and how much to use

Macadamia is a medium weight oil that behaves lighter than its viscosity suggests. It spreads easily, wets the skin quickly and leaves a soft, slightly cushioned residue rather than a slick one. It is not dry like squalane and not tacky like castor. In a blend it is the component that stops a fast, dry oil feeling thin without adding the heaviness that avocado or olive bring.

The sensory shift across that range is real and worth testing rather than guessing. At 10 percent of a balm you get a slight rounding of the feel and nothing else. At 20 to 25 the product has an obvious cushion on application. At 40 the balm reads as rich and slow, which is what you want in a winter body balm and not what you want on a face. Refined against cold pressed

Cold pressed cosmetic grade is pale yellow to gold, sometimes with a faint green cast, and carries a soft nutty, buttery odour that survives into the finished balm at anything above about 20 percent. It keeps more of the tocopherols, tocotrienols and phytosterols, though macadamia was never a rich source of any of them. Refined grade has been neutralised, bleached and deodorised: near colourless, near odourless, marginally longer lived because the free fatty acids and any early oxidation products have gone with the processing.

Choose cold pressed when the nutty note suits the product, when you are selling on minimal processing, or in a fragrance-free balm where a faint natural odour is preferable to nothing. Choose refined when you are building a precise fragrance, when the balm is pale or tinted and a gold cast would read as discolouration, or when you need batch-to-batch colour consistency across a range. Do not buy culinary roasted macadamia oil for a balm: roasting drives the odour somewhere far stronger and darker than any fragrance will cover, and the material is specified for food, not for cosmetic use.

Storage, oxidation and how long it really lasts

With an index of 2 to 6 and an iodine value of 70 to 80, macadamia is in the stable tier. An 18 to 24 month vendor claim is achievable from delivery if the oil is kept below about 20 C, in the dark, in a container that is close to full. Headspace is the variable most makers ignore: an oil decanted down to a third of a drum is oxidising against several times the oxygen of a full one, so decant into smaller bottles rather than opening the same large one repeatedly.

Antioxidants help at the margins and cannot rescue oil that has already turned. Mixed tocopherols at 0.05 to 0.2 percent of the oil phase and rosemary extract at supplier rates are both reasonable insurance, with the caveats in vitamin E and antioxidants. Date the bottle on arrival, not on opening. The life of a finished balm is set by its shortest lived component, which will rarely be the macadamia, and what a turned batch smells like is in rancid balm.

Comedogenic ratings, traced

Macadamia oil is usually quoted as 2 or 3 on the five point comedogenicity scale, which places it in the middle of a list where nobody can point to the measurement. That scale descends from rabbit ear assays run in the 1970s and 1980s, in which test materials were applied to the external ear canal of albino rabbits and follicular hyperkeratosis was scored histologically. The rabbit ear is far more reactive than human facial skin, materials were often tested neat rather than at use concentration, and the published tables never covered the full list of oils that now carry numbers. Where a rating for macadamia appears, it has usually been carried over from a compilation rather than measured.

The practical evidence for that is in the disagreement itself: the same oil is listed at 2 on one chart and 3 on another, which tells you the numbers are being copied, not read off an instrument. Human comedogenicity is assessed properly by a use test on the backs of acne-prone volunteers over several weeks, which almost no individual raw material has been through. Tree nut allergen status and what the label must say

Careful

Macadamia is a declarable tree nut in food law in the UK, the EU and the US. Refining reduces residual protein but does not reliably eliminate it, and lip products are swallowed. Keep macadamia out of lip balms and children's products where you cannot have a conversation with the buyer, and use one of the alternatives in nut free balm.

The regulatory position is narrower than most makers assume. Macadamia appears on the food allergen lists that require declaration in the UK and EU under the food information rules and in the US as one of the tree nuts named by FDA, but cosmetics are not covered by food allergen labelling. What applies to a balm is ordinary cosmetic ingredient labelling: the full INCI list in descending order of weight under the EU and UK Cosmetic Products Regulation, and the ingredient declaration required for a cosmetic in the US. There is no mandatory "contains nuts" statement on a cosmetic in any of those jurisdictions.

That is a floor, not a standard of care. A person with a diagnosed macadamia allergy scanning a lip balm ingredient list will recognise the botanical name, which is a good argument for declaring the species accurately rather than using an unfamiliar synonym. Cross-contact in a shared workshop is a real risk if you also handle almond or hazelnut oil, and the specific risks of nut oils in cosmetics, including the residual protein question and the low protein limits regulators have discussed for refined nut oils, are set out in nut oil allergy. If you sell in the UK or the EU, the oil also has to be addressed in the product safety assessment, so tell your assessor the species, the grade and whether the pressing line handles other nuts.

Cost and the closest substitutes

Macadamia sits in the upper middle cost band: several times the price per kilogram of sunflower or rice bran, roughly comparable to sweet almond and avocado in most markets, and well below argan, marula or squalane. It is rarely the ingredient that decides whether a formula is viable, but at 40 percent of a body balm it is a visible line on the costing.

If the goal is the palmitoleic content specifically, the honest substitution is none of these: only sea buckthorn pulp oil carries more, and it cannot be used above a few percent without colouring the product. If the goal is the feel, apricot kernel oil gets closest at a lower price and removes the nut declaration, at the cost of some shelf life. Where macadamia is the wrong choice

Three situations rule it out regardless of how it feels. Anything for children, anything sold where you cannot warn a buyer about tree nuts, and anything for someone with a known nut allergy: the residual protein question is unresolved enough that the sensible answer is to reformulate rather than to reassure. A fourth situation is subtler. If your product needs to feel fast and dry, macadamia works against you above about 20 percent, and the fix people reach for, adding a light ester on top, usually just makes the balm bigger rather than lighter.

The decision rule is straightforward. Use macadamia when you want a stable oil that feels cushioned rather than dry, at 20 to 40 percent in body and face products where a nut declaration is acceptable. Use high-oleic sunflower when the budget is the constraint and apricot kernel when the allergen is. Do not choose it for the sebum resemblance, which is real in bulk composition, wrong at the level of the specific isomer, and not a benefit even where it holds.

Why do labels say Macadamia ternifolia when the oil is from another species?

Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil is a long established cosmetic ingredient name that stuck on data sheets, even though commercial oil is pressed from Macadamia integrifolia, Macadamia tetraphylla or hybrids of the two. Both names are valid ingredient nomenclature. Ask what your supplier's certificate declares and use that on your label.

Is refined or cold pressed macadamia better for balms?

Neither is better in general. Cold pressed keeps a soft nutty odour and a gold colour that show up above roughly 20 percent of a formula, plus slightly more tocopherols. Refined is near odourless and near colourless, which is what you want under a precise fragrance or in a pale tinted product. Never use culinary roasted macadamia oil.
