Kitchen oils in balms: which cupboard oils actually work

Olive, sunflower, rapeseed, sesame, coconut and butter: which kitchen oils make a decent balm, which ruin it, and how fast each one turns.

Most people who want to make a balm already own three or four usable oils. The kit lists that insist on sweet almond, jojoba and rosehip are selling shopping, not chemistry. A fat is a fat, and the questions worth asking about a bottle of supermarket oil are the same ones you would ask about a cosmetic-grade one: how stable is it, what does it smell like, and what happens when it fails.

Short answer

Yes, you can make a good balm with kitchen oils. Olive, high-oleic sunflower, rice bran and avocado all work well. Standard sunflower and grapeseed go rancid too fast to be worth it. Coconut oil softens a balm rather than hardening it. Butter is unsafe because of its water content, and ghee smells wrong.

What actually decides whether a kitchen oil works

Three properties matter, and only three. The first is oxidative stability, which tracks the polyunsaturate content: the more linoleic (C18:2) and linolenic (C18:3) acid an oil carries, the faster it turns. The second is odour, because a balm has no water, no fragrance budget to spare and no way to hide a strong base note. The third is body, meaning how heavy or slippery the oil feels once it is held in a wax matrix. Everything else, including most of what appears on the front of the bottle, is irrelevant to you.

Nothing in a kitchen oil makes it unsuitable in principle. The same refined sunflower oil sits in both a chip pan and a moisturiser. What differs is provenance and freshness, and those are worth a section of their own further down. Oil by oil: smell, feel and the failure mode

Olive

The most common question we get is whether olive oil belongs in a lip balm, and the answer is a qualified yes. Its oleic content puts it near the stable end of the table, and it carries roughly 0.5 percent squalene, which is a genuine skin lipid. In a finished balm it is noticeably heavy, sits on the lip rather than sinking in, and tastes faintly peppery. Extra virgin oil brings a green, grassy top note that some people read as salad. Use a light or refined grade if you want the balm to smell of nothing much. Failure mode: the smell dominates, and at high percentages the balm feels greasy rather than cushioned.

High-oleic sunflower

If your cupboard happens to hold a bottle labelled high oleic, you have the best kitchen oil for balm making. It is close to odourless, thin enough to feel light in a lip balm, cheap enough for body balm, and stable for a year or two. Failure mode: none worth naming, except that supermarket bottles rarely say which type of sunflower they are, and the standard type is much worse.

Standard sunflower and grapeseed

Both feel excellent. Grapeseed in particular is the lightest, driest oil in most kitchens, and it makes a balm that absorbs beautifully. Both are also 55 to 75 percent linoleic acid, which means the finished balm is on a clock of months, not years. Failure mode: you make a batch in autumn and it smells of old crayons by spring. Rapeseed and canola

Better than its reputation. The oleic content is high, the odour is mild, and the feel is between olive and sunflower. The problem is the 8 to 11 percent alpha-linolenic acid, which is the fastest-oxidising common fatty acid. Failure mode: the fishy, painty note that linolenic oils develop, which appears in the jar before you would expect it from the oleic number alone.

Sesame

Toasted sesame oil is not a candidate. Pale, cold pressed or refined sesame is, and it is more stable than its 35 to 48 percent linoleic content suggests, because it contains sesamol and sesamin, natural antioxidants that are part of why the oil keeps well in hot climates. Failure mode: the smell. Even pale sesame reads as nutty and savoury in a lip product.

Avocado and rice bran

Avocado is the richest of the cupboard oils and works well in a hand or foot balm where a heavy film is the point. Cold pressed avocado is dark green and will tint the balm. Rice bran is lighter, faintly cereal-scented, and carries gamma-oryzanol, which contributes some oxidative resistance. Failure modes: avocado stains and can smell vegetal, and rice bran has enough linoleic acid to need an antioxidant if you want a year out of it.

Coconut

Coconut oil is the one people most often misuse, because it is solid in the jar and they assume it hardens a balm. It melts at 24 to 26 C, so above room temperature it behaves as a liquid oil, and a balm built on it will be soft in summer. It is very stable, being mostly lauric and myristic acid, and it is the classic reason a balm turns grainy after slow cooling. The detail is covered in coconut oil in balms.

Why butter and ghee are the wrong answer

Dairy fat comes up constantly, usually framed as an ancestral option alongside tallow. Butter is around 80 to 82 percent fat, 16 to 17 percent water, and the remainder milk protein, lactose and salt. Those last three are a growth medium, and the water gives them the water activity to use it. A butter balm is not an anhydrous product at all: it is a wet emulsion with no preservative, which is the classic route to mould in a balm.

Ghee solves the water problem, since clarifying drives off the moisture and removes the solids. Two problems remain. Butterfat carries short-chain fatty acids, notably butyric acid, and when those hydrolyse the result is not the neutral cardboard smell of an oxidised seed oil but a sharp cheesy, sick-making note. And butterfat melts at roughly 32 to 35 C, so it contributes almost no structure. A plant butter does the same job better: see the plant butters.

Safety

Any ingredient that carries water into an anhydrous balm changes the risk category. Butter, milk, honey, aloe gel, fresh herbs and undried infusions all do this. If water is present, the product needs a real preservative system, which is a different discipline. See do balms need preservatives.

Food grade against cosmetic grade: the real difference

Chemically, refined sunflower oil for cooking and refined sunflower oil sold for cosmetics are the same substance. Both are usually degummed, neutralised, bleached and deodorised. The differences are in specification and handling rather than in kind.

  • What each is optimised for. Food refining targets flavour neutrality, smoke point and frying performance. Cosmetic refining targets colour, odour, a low free fatty acid value and a low peroxide value on delivery, because those drive how a cream or balm ages.
  • Documentation. A cosmetic supplier gives you a certificate of analysis with peroxide value, free fatty acids and often the fatty acid profile of that batch. A supermarket bottle gives you a best-before date that refers to eating it.
  • Time in the chain. Cosmetic oils are usually bought closer to pressing and stored in nitrogen-flushed drums. A supermarket bottle may have spent months on a warm shelf under lights.
  • Additives. Some food oils carry added antioxidants, and some frying blends carry anti-foaming agents such as dimethicone. Neither is dangerous on skin, but if you are selling, you must declare everything, which you cannot do from a nutrition panel. That is one of several reasons sourcing changes once money is involved.

Cold pressed against refined

Cold pressed oils retain more tocopherols, more phytosterols and more colour and smell. Refined oils lose some of the minor components but start with a lower peroxide value and a cleaner odour. For a balm, refined is usually the better technical choice and cold pressed is the better marketing choice. Cold pressed oils are not automatically more stable, because the unsaponifiable fraction that protects them is partly offset by residual chlorophyll and metal traces that catalyse oxidation.

The opened bottle problem

The single most common cause of a balm that smells wrong within a month is an oil that was already halfway through its life. Every shelf life in the table above starts when the seal is broken, and it is spent by three things: oxygen in the headspace, heat, and light. A bottle stored above a cooker for a year has had all three.

There is no home test for peroxide value, but your nose is a serviceable instrument. Pour a teaspoon, let it come to room temperature, and smell it neat. Fresh oil smells of the seed or of nothing. Oxidising oil smells of crayons, putty, old nuts, cardboard or paint. Any of those means the batch will be worse in the jar than it is in the bottle, because you are about to heat it, aerate it while stirring and give it a large surface area. Workshop tip

Decant. Buy the smallest bottle you can, transfer it to a full, dark glass bottle with as little headspace as possible, and keep it in the fridge if it will tolerate the cold. Halving the headspace does more for shelf life than any antioxidant you can add.

A worked example with cupboard ingredients

The old herbal salve rule is one part wax to eight parts oil by weight. All percentages here are weight percent of the total and add to 100.

  • Beeswax at 11 percent = 6.6 g.
  • Olive oil at 89 percent = 53.4 g.
  • Total 60.0 g, which fills two tins with roughly 6 g left in the jug.

Melt in a water bath at 70 to 80 C, stir until clear, then pour tins at 60 to 68 C. If the set balm is too firm for your hands, drop the wax to 9 percent and add the difference in oil. The behaviour of the structurant is covered under beeswax, and the method itself under how to make lip balm.

What none of this changes

Kitchen oils do not make a balm less effective. Occlusion and emolliency come from the fat film and the wax, not from the price of the bottle. What kitchen oils do change is predictability: you are working with an unknown peroxide value, an unknown storage history and a smell you did not choose. If a batch is for you and you will use it in three months, the cupboard is fine. If you are giving it away, buy a fresh, high-oleic oil and write the date on the tin. The one line worth keeping: choose the most saturated or most oleic oil that gives you the feel you want, and buy it in the smallest bottle you will actually finish.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use olive oil in lip balm?

Yes. Olive oil is 55 to 80 percent oleic acid, which makes it one of the more stable cupboard oils, and it sets into a soft, cushioned balm. The drawbacks are its own peppery, green odour, which survives into the finished product, and a heavy feel on the lips. Use a mild refined or light olive oil rather than a strong extra virgin one.

Is cooking oil the same as cosmetic grade oil?

Not quite. The plant and the fatty acid profile are the same, but food refining is optimised for flavour, frying stability and cost, while cosmetic refining is optimised for colour, odour and a low free fatty acid content. Food grade oil is safe on skin. It is simply more variable in smell, colour and how long it has already been sitting in the supply chain.

Which is better for balm, olive oil or sweet almond oil?

Sweet almond feels lighter and smells almost of nothing, so it is the better choice for a balm you want to be neutral. Olive lasts longer once opened, because almond carries 20 to 30 percent linoleic acid against olive's 5 to 20 percent. If neutrality matters, choose almond. If shelf life matters, choose olive or high-oleic sunflower.

Can I use butter or ghee in a balm?

Butter is a bad idea: it is roughly 16 percent water plus milk protein and lactose, which is exactly what mould needs. Ghee is clarified and effectively water free, so it will not spoil the same way, but its short-chain fatty acids break down into a strongly rancid, cheesy smell, and it makes a very soft balm. Use a plant butter instead.

My oil has been open in a warm cupboard for a year. Can I still use it?

Smell it neat on a spoon at room temperature. If there is any crayon, putty, old nuts or paint note, it is already oxidising and the balm will smell worse within weeks. A balm inherits the oil's remaining life, not a fresh clock. Heat and headspace air are the two things that spend that life fastest.

Does adding vitamin E fix an old kitchen oil?

No. Tocopherol slows oxidation that has not happened yet. It cannot reverse peroxides and aldehydes already formed, and it is not a preservative against mould or bacteria. Add it at 0.1 to 0.5 percent to a fresh oil, below 50 to 60 C, and expect it to buy weeks or months rather than years.
