Pre shave balm: a thin occlusive film that survives the lather laid on top of it
A pre shave balm at 6 percent wax and 35 percent castor oil, in a 30 ml tin poured at 58 to 64 C, formulated not to clog a razor or collapse the lather above it.
A pre shave product has a constraint no other balm on this site has: something else goes on top of it, and that something is a soap foam it can destroy. Most home made pre shave recipes ignore this and produce a thick oil film that flattens the lather, clogs the cartridge and leaves the face greasy after rinsing. This page gives a formula built around the interaction, a way to test it with a bowl and a brush, and the dose in tenths of a gram that makes it work.
Beeswax 6 percent, castor oil 35, jojoba 20, fast spreading esters 20, squalane 10, high oleic sunflower 8.8, tocopherols 0.2. Melt at 70 to 75 C and pour 30 ml tins at 58 to 64 C, fill 27 g, cure 24 hours. Warm 0.15 to 0.2 g in the palms for a whole face, on skin that is already wet.
What the film has to do, and what it must not do
Cutting a beard hair is a mechanical problem, and the single biggest variable in it is water. A hair soaked in warm water for two to three minutes swells and softens, and the force needed to cut it falls sharply; the figure quoted in shaving research is often around a halving, which is worth treating as an order of magnitude rather than a constant. Nothing you can put in a tin comes close to that effect. So the first rule of a pre shave film is that it must not get in the way of the water.
That gives four requirements, and two of them pull against each other. The film has to reduce the friction between the blade edge and the skin, so the razor glides rather than catching. It has to stay on the skin through the lather, the pass and the rinse, which means cling. It must not stop water reaching the hair, which means thin, and applied to skin that is already wet. And it must not kill the foam sitting on top of it, which rules out several materials that would otherwise be obvious choices.
Put another way, this is the one balm on the site where a heavier film is straightforwardly worse. The properties being traded, and the levers that move each of them, are set out at balm texture science.
The formula
Weight percent of the total batch, totalling exactly 100. The gram column is a 250 g batch, which fills eight 30 ml tins at 27 g with roughly 12 percent left for the jug, the spatula and the thermometer.

Why each number is what it is
Six percent beeswax is the whole structural budget. It is enough that the product sits in a tin as a soft solid rather than a pool of oil, and little enough that a fingernail's worth softens in the palms in about ten seconds. Push it to 10 percent and two things go wrong: the film reads waxy and the lather sits on top of it rather than wetting it, and users start taking more product because the small amount will not spread.
Thirty five percent castor oil is the load bearing choice, and it is chosen for the lather as much as for the skin. Castor is around 85 to 90 percent ricinoleic acid, with a viscosity commonly reported near 950 to 1,100 mPa s at 20 C, roughly twenty times that of a typical liquid oil. High viscosity and high polarity are exactly the properties that make an oil droplet bad at entering and rupturing a foam film. It is also a standard ingredient in traditional shaving soaps, at 5 to 20 percent of the fat charge, because ricinoleate soap builds a dense, stable, slick lather. Putting castor under the lather is putting in something the soap already contains.
Twenty percent jojoba oil does two jobs: it is a liquid wax ester rather than a triglyceride, so it is very stable and adds shelf life, and it thins the castor enough to spread. Castor on its own at this dose drags rather than glides, which is the fault described at drag and poor glide.
The 20 percent ester block is the compromise in the formula, and it is worth being honest about. Coco-caprylate and C12-15 alkyl benzoate are low viscosity and fast spreading, which is precisely what makes them good at cutting the greasy afterfeel and slightly bad for the lather. Twenty percent is where the film stops feeling oily without measurably flattening a good soap. Push it to 30 and the lather goes thin; drop it to 10 and the complaint becomes shine, for the reasons at greasy heavy afterfeel. The spreading values for the esters worth knowing are at cosmetic esters. Ten percent squalane is there because it is bland, saturated and dry, and 8.8 percent high oleic sunflower is a cost line rather than a performance one.
The lather problem
Oils destroy foams by a well studied route. A droplet at the surface of a foam film can enter the air and water interface and spread across it, bridging the two sides of the film and rupturing it. How readily that happens depends on the spreading and entering behaviour of the oil, and low viscosity, low polarity oils are far better at it than thick polar ones. The effect gets dramatically stronger when hydrophobic solid particles are present alongside the oil: an oil plus particle mixture is the classic commercial antifoam, far more destructive than either component alone.
Two practical rules fall out of that. Silicones and mineral oil are the worst things to put under a lather, and any hydrophobic powder is worse still. That means no dimethicone, whatever a commercial pre shave oil claims, and no silica, starch, clay, zinc oxide or mica in this formula at all. The behaviour of those two families in balms generally is at silicones in balms and starches and silica. It also explains why the wax has to stay low: wax crystals are hydrophobic particles, and at high enough loading they act like one.

Testing it with a bowl and a brush
You can rank materials at home well enough to make formulation decisions, provided you keep everything else constant.
- Fix the soap and the water. Weigh 3 g of the same soap into the same bowl every time, and add 6 g of water at about 40 C. Water hardness matters, so use the same tap.
- Fix the brush. Soak it, then shake it the same number of times. A wetter brush makes better lather and will hide a real effect.
- Build for a timed 60 seconds. Mark the lather height against a line on the bowl, and note whether it is still standing at three minutes.
- Run the blank first. Then smear 0.2 g of the test material around the inside of the bowl and repeat, which stands in for the film on your face.
- Anchor the scale. Include one known destroyer, a drop of dimethicone, so you know what total collapse looks like against a mild thinning.
Be honest about what this gives you. It is a ranking, not a measurement. The standardised method for foam height and stability is the Ross-Miles column (ASTM D1173), which needs a metre of glassware and a temperature bath, and even that measures a surfactant solution rather than a shaving lather on skin. The bowl test is reliable for telling apart the three categories that matter: no effect, thinning, and collapse.
Razor clogging, film weight and rinsing
The gaps between the blades of a multi blade cartridge are fractions of a millimetre and hold cut whisker, soap and product by capillary action. Once a cartridge is loaded, the blades ride on a pad of debris instead of the skin, and the shave gets worse in exactly the way people blame on a blunt blade. A viscous pre shave film adds to that load, so the two levers are viscosity and dose.
The dose lever is the effective one. A film has a weight per unit area, and the useful comparison is a moisturiser: the European safety committee's notes of guidance take the face and neck as about 565 cm2 and a daily face cream dose as roughly 1.54 g, which is about 2.7 mg per square centimetre. A pre shave film wants to be a fraction of that.

Rinsing behaviour between passes matters as much as the dose. Rinse the razor under hot running water, not in a still bowl, because a bowl deposits the film you just rinsed off straight back onto the head. An open comb safety razor clears in one pass under a tap and tolerates roughly twice the film weight of a five blade cartridge before it starts to hold product.
Weigh the dose once, on a scale that reads to 0.01 g, so you know what 0.15 g actually looks like on a fingertip. Almost everyone's instinctive dose is three to five times that. Warm it between the palms until it turns fluid, press it onto skin that is already wet from the shower or a hot towel, then lather straight over the top without drying off. Why more product makes the shave worse
Three separate mechanisms all push the same way. A thick lipid film is a barrier to water, so the hair gets less hydrated and the blade has to work harder on it, which is the opposite of the intended effect. More lipid on the face means more transferred into the razor head on the first pass. And more lipid means more of it reaches the lather, and the destabilising effect of an oil on a foam is dose dependent, so the same material that is harmless at 0.15 g flattens the foam at 0.6 g.
There is a fourth, slower consequence. A heavy occlusive film on skin that is then abraded by a blade is a plausible route to the small papules along the jaw and neck that people report as shaving breakouts. Whether it happens to a given person is not predictable from an ingredient list, and the untraceable comedogenic charts are no help, as explained at will a balm break me out.
Method, pour and cure
- Weigh phase A into one jug. Beeswax first, then castor, jojoba, both esters, squalane and sunflower, taring between each addition.
- Melt at 70 to 75 C. In a water bath. Hold only until the liquid is completely clear, which takes a few minutes once the wax has gone.
- Cool below 55 C, add the tocopherol. Stir gently rather than whisking; a low wax formula that has been aerated sets with pinholes.
- Pour tins at 58 to 64 C. Below 58 C the surface sets matte and ridged, above 64 C a 30 ml tin develops a deep centre dip.
- Cool level and undisturbed. Lids off for an hour at room temperature. Do not chill, which frosts the surface at this wax level.
- Cure 24 hours before judging. A 6 percent wax product finishes crystallising slowly, and a soft set assessed at twenty minutes will be assessed wrong.
The target is a soft set: a thumb should dent the surface with light pressure, and a fingernail's scrape should give you a dose that goes fluid in the palms in about ten seconds. If it is harder than that in a cold bathroom, drop the beeswax to 5 percent rather than raising the temperature of the room. The reasoning behind pour windows generally is at pour temperatures.

Head shaving
A scalp is a curved, mobile surface with no beard growth pattern to work with, and the pass is longer. Raise castor to 40 percent and cut coco-caprylate to 7, keeping the total at 100, which slows the film's drainage without adding wax. Dose goes to 0.25 g for the scalp alone. Keep the wax at 6 percent, because a stiffer film on a warm scalp is harder to spread, not easier. Scalp specific considerations are at scalp balm.

Sensitive neck, no menthol
Drop both esters to 10 percent combined and put the 10 points into squalane, giving a blander, slower film for skin that reacts. No fragrance, no essential oil, and no menthol. Menthol does not cool anything, it activates the TRPM8 receptor, and it is an irritant on skin that is about to be scraped by a blade. The limits and the mechanism are at menthol, camphor and other actives. If the neck reacts to the balm itself, the ester fraction is the first thing to remove.

Where a pre shave balm does not help
The honest limit is that this product is a third order variable. A blade that has done fifteen shaves, three passes where one would do, and shaving against the grain each cost more comfort than any pre shave film can return. If the shave hurts, change those first and treat the balm as the refinement it is. It also does nothing after the fact: what goes on the skin once the blade has removed part of the surface lipid is a different formulation problem, worked through at aftershave balm.
Two groups should be careful. If you are prone to seborrhoeic dermatitis or Malassezia driven folliculitis, the ester block in this formula is the wrong choice, since esters with fatty acid chains in the C12 to C16 range feed the organism; the substitutions that work are at Malassezia safe balms. And if the problem is persistent inflamed bumps and ingrowing hairs rather than transient irritation, that is pseudofolliculitis barbae, a diagnosable condition, and no cosmetic can be sold as a treatment for it. The decision rule is simple. Make this if you wet shave with soap and a brush and want less blade drag on a specific area, usually the neck and the jawline, and you are willing to use a dose you can barely see. If you shave in the shower with a cartridge and canned foam, a pre shave balm will clog the razor faster than it improves anything, and the better investment is a fresh blade.
Frequently asked questions
Will a pre shave balm ruin my lather?
It will if you use too much of it, or if it contains a silicone or a powder. Oils destabilise foam by spreading across the film and rupturing it, and hydrophobic particles like silica or starch make that far worse. Castor, jojoba and squalane are close to harmless at a sensible dose. Keep the dose to 0.15 to 0.2 g for a whole face and the lather survives.
How much pre shave balm should I use?
About 0.15 g for a face and neck with a cartridge razor, and 0.2 g with a safety or straight razor. That is roughly a tenth of the dose you would use of a face moisturiser over the same area. Weigh it once on a 0.01 g scale, because almost everyone's instinctive amount is three to five times too much, and excess is what clogs a razor.
Should I put pre shave balm on dry or wet skin?
Wet. A hair soaked in warm water for two to three minutes softens considerably and needs much less force to cut, and a lipid film applied to dry skin slows that water down. Shower or use a hot towel first, apply the warmed balm to skin that is still wet, then lather straight over it without drying off.
Can I use a pre shave oil instead of a balm?
Yes, and mechanically it does the same job. The advantages of a soft balm are that the dose is easier to control, the wax adds a little cling so the film survives the lather better, and a tin does not leak in a wash bag. The disadvantage is that a balm has to be warmed in the palms, which some people find fussy at seven in the morning.
Why does my razor clog when I use a pre shave?

Is menthol a good idea in a pre shave?
No. Menthol does not cool anything; it activates the TRPM8 cold receptor so the brain reports cold while skin temperature is unchanged. On skin that is about to be scraped by a blade it is an irritant with no mechanical benefit, and it masks the discomfort that would otherwise tell you the blade or the technique is wrong. It also carries concentration limits that most recipes ignore.
How long does a tin of pre shave balm last?
Two ways to read that. In use, a 27 g tin at 0.15 g per shave is roughly 180 shaves, so six months of daily shaving. In storage, shelf life is set by the least stable oil: on castor, jojoba, squalane and high oleic sunflower with 0.2 percent mixed tocopherols, plan on 12 to 18 months in a closed tin kept out of the bathroom window's sunlight.
