Gardener's hand salve: a barrier formula for before the job and a repair formula for after
Two hand salve formulas by weight percent with grams: a fast absorbing barrier salve to wear while you work and a heavy repair salve for afterwards, plus fissure care and infusions.
Most hand salves are sold for one moment: the end of the day, when the damage is already done. That is half a product. Hands that dig, prune, sand or wash up all day are being stripped continuously, and there is a second, more useful moment, which is five minutes before the work starts. The two moments want different formulas, and this page gives both.
Make two salves. A barrier salve at 12 percent wax with lanolin, jojoba and light esters absorbs in a minute and survives several handwashes, so you can wear it while you work. A repair salve at 10 percent wax with 46 percent butters and lanolin goes on afterwards and stays put overnight.
What working hands are actually up against
Four separate insults, and each has a different countermeasure.
Water and detergent. Repeated wetting and washing removes intercellular lipid and swells then shrinks the stratum corneum. This is the main driver of dry, tight, cracking hands, and it beats weather by a wide margin.
Mechanical abrasion. Soil, grit, bark and tool handles abrade the surface and drive dirt into the skin's furrows. A pre-applied lipid film fills those furrows, so soil sits on the film rather than in the skin, and it washes off with less scrubbing.
Stain and sap. Plant pigments and resins bind readily to dry keratin. A film gets between them and the skin.
Flexion. Fingers bend thousands of times a day. Dry skin at a knuckle or fingertip splits along the lines of maximum strain, which is why fissures appear at the same three or four places on everyone's hands.
A salve deals with all four by physical means: it is an anhydrous film, and nothing more. The formulation logic behind that is set out in anhydrous formulation.
Two moments, two formulas
The reason one salve cannot do both jobs is a direct conflict. Barrier protection wants a film that stays on through washing but disappears from the fingertips fast enough that you can still hold a trowel or a phone. Repair wants the heaviest, tackiest, longest resident film you can tolerate. Optimising for one degrades the other.

Formula one: barrier salve, worn while you work
Percentages are by weight and total exactly 100. The grams column is for a 240 g batch, which fills four 2 oz (60 mL) tins at 55 g each (220 g) with 20 g of overage, about nine percent.

Rub about 0.5 g into dry hands, paying attention to the nail folds and the backs of the fingers, five minutes before you start. It is not slippery once it has absorbed, and it makes the post-job wash considerably easier.
Formula two: repair salve, for the end of the day
Percentages are by weight and total exactly 100. The grams column is for a 120 g batch, which fills two 2 oz (60 mL) tins at 54 g each (108 g) with 12 g of overage, ten percent.

Method, for either batch
- Melt the solids. Beeswax, lanolin, shea and cocoa butter in a water bath, held at 75-80 C (167-176 F) for ten minutes. Shea needs every crystal dissolved and cocoa butter needs a full melt or it sets with pale streaks.
- Add the liquid oils. Return to 75 C and stir until there is no separate glossy lanolin layer on the surface.
- Cool to 58-60 C (136-140 F) off the heat, stirring slowly so you do not fold in air.
- Dose tocopherol and any essential oil at 58-60 C. Ten seconds of stirring, no more.
- Pour at 60-65 C (140-149 F) to 55 g per 2 oz tin. Fill in one continuous pour so the top sets flat.
- Cool fast. Twenty minutes in the fridge, not the freezer.
- Cure 24 hours before judging. Both salves read a grade softer on pouring day than they will be.
How to adjust either formula
One change per batch, rebalanced against the liquid oils so the total stays at 100.
- Barrier salve too greasy to work in: lanolin 18 to 14 and shea 7 to 4, adding the 7 points to caprylic/capric triglyceride.
- Barrier salve rinsing off too fast: lanolin 18 to 22 and castor 10 to 13, taking the 7 points from jojoba.
- Repair salve too tacky overnight: lanolin 20 to 14, adding 4 points to shea and 2 to the infused oil.
- Firmer tin for a hot workshop: beeswax up 2 points in either formula, or hold the beeswax and add 1.5 percent carnauba.
- Softer, scoopable in a cold shed: beeswax down 2 points, cocoa butter down 3, both given back to the liquid oils.
- Vegan version: candelilla at 0.65 times the beeswax weight, and see the lanolin section below, which is the harder substitution. Conversion arithmetic for the wax is in vegan beeswax substitutes.
Test the barrier salve the honest way. Apply it to one hand only, work for an hour, then wash both hands once with ordinary soap and compare how the skin feels twenty minutes later. It is the only comparison that tells you anything, and it takes a morning.
Lanolin, and what to use instead
Lanolin is the reason a hand salve survives a wash. It is a mixture of wax esters, sterols and lanolin alcohols with a melt range of 38-44 C, it is tacky rather than slippery, and it clings to keratin in a way triglycerides do not. Nothing plant based reproduces that behaviour exactly. It is also a genuine, if uncommon, contact allergen, so patch test on the inner forearm for 48 hours before you commit to it.
The nearest vegan approximation is a blend rather than a single material: for each 10 points of lanolin, use 5 points of castor oil, 3 points of a hard butter (kokum or cocoa) and 2 points of meadowfoam, then add 1 to 2 percent extra wax to compensate for the lost body. Expect it to wash off one handwash sooner. The material detail is in lanolin.
Calendula and plantain infusions
Both plants have a long history in hand and skin preparations, and both are simple to infuse into a stable base oil such as high-oleic sunflower or jojoba. Be clear about what you are buying: an infusion changes colour, scent and story, and the clinical evidence for topical calendula and plantain in humans is limited and mostly low quality. The salve still works because of its lipids.
The formulation risk is water. Plant material that is not bone dry carries moisture into the oil, and once there is water in an anhydrous product you have created something that can grow mould, no antioxidant will help, and it needs a preservative it does not contain. Dry the material completely, infuse warm at 40-60 C or cold over two to four weeks, strain through cloth, and let the oil settle so you can decant off anything that sinks. Fragrance restraint on hands that touch food
Hands are the highest exposure site on the body for a leave-on product. They go to the face, to food, to a child's skin, and they carry whatever is on them into the eyes. They are also the commonest site of irritant and allergic contact dermatitis, and the skin is already compromised in exactly the people this product is aimed at.
The Trebalm position is 0.5 percent essential oil maximum for a hand salve used repeatedly through the day, against 1-2 percent for an adult body balm, and zero for any version intended for cracked or fissured skin. Citrus oils in particular are a poor choice here because some are phototoxic on skin that then spends the day outdoors. Material by material limits are in essential oils in balms. If you sell an unscented version alongside a scented one, most gardeners buy the unscented one twice.
Hand fissures and when a salve is the wrong answer
A salve helps a fissure mostly by mechanics. Sealing the split and keeping the surrounding skin pliable means the crack is not pulled open again with every grip, which is what stops it closing. Applied at night under thin cotton gloves, the effect is much larger than the same salve applied and then immediately used.
Stop and see a clinician if a fissure is deep, bleeding repeatedly, hot, spreading, discharging or painful out of proportion, or if there is a red streak running up the hand. Persistent itchy, scaling, blistering or weeping hands may be irritant or allergic contact dermatitis or eczema, which needs diagnosis and often prescription treatment: a salve is supportive care at best. Where to start
Make the barrier salve first, in a 240 g batch, unscented, and carry a tin in a coat pocket for two weeks. It is the formula people have never tried, and it is the one that changes how their hands feel at the end of a season rather than at the end of an evening. Make the repair salve second, sized small, because a 54 g tin used nightly lasts three months and you want it fresh. Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a barrier salve and a repair salve?
Timing and speed. A barrier salve goes on before work: it is lighter, absorbs in about a minute, leaves enough film to resist soil and washing, and does not make tools slippery. A repair salve goes on after: heavier, higher in lanolin and butters, slow to absorb, and intended to sit on the skin overnight.
Does a barrier salve replace gloves?
No. Gloves are the only real protection against thorns, chemicals and prolonged wet work. A barrier salve reduces how much water and detergent strip the skin, makes soil easier to wash off, and keeps the skin flexible while you work. Treat it as a supplement to gloves, never a substitute.
Why lanolin in a hand salve?
Because it is the most substantive occlusive available: it clings through several handwashes where plant oils rinse away in one. It is also a known contact allergen for a small minority, so patch test before you commit, and label it clearly if you sell the product.
Will a salve fix cracked fingertips?
It helps a lot with the comfort and the reopening. A sealing film keeps a fissure from being pulled apart every time you flex the finger, and it keeps the surrounding skin pliable. It does not close a deep split on its own, and a fissure that is hot, spreading, or discharging needs a clinician.
How much fragrance should a hand salve carry?
Very little, and none at all is a defensible choice. Hands touch food, faces and eyes, and they are the most common site of irritant and allergic contact dermatitis. Keep essential oils at or below 0.5 percent of batch weight for a product used many times a day, and leave them out entirely for cracked skin.
Is calendula infused oil worth the trouble?
As a base oil it is at least as good as the oil you infused it in, and the traditional evidence for calendula in skin preparations is long standing while the clinical evidence is limited. Infuse only in bone dry plant material, because any residual water in a jar of oil is what turns an anhydrous salve into a mould problem.
How do I stop the salve going rancid in a shed?
Choose oils by stability rather than by fashion: jojoba, meadowfoam and caprylic/capric triglyceride last for years, while sunflower and grapeseed do not. Add 0.5 percent mixed tocopherols, keep tins capped and full, and store them indoors. Heat cycling in a shed roughly halves the useful life of any oil blend.
