Formula converter: parts, cups and ounces into weight percent
Convert parts, tablespoons, cups and ounces into weight percentages, and resolve the ambiguous folk recipes that produce a different balm depending on how you read them.
Craft recipes are written in parts, spoons and cups. Formulas are written in weight percent. Converting between them sounds trivial and is not, because the traditional recipes mix units in a way that makes the same sentence mean two quite different products. This page converts, and it shows you exactly where the ambiguity is.
Weigh everything and work in percent of the total batch weight. The classic "1 oz beeswax to 1 cup of oil" salve is 11.6% wax if the ounce is by weight, but only 7.5% if it is read as a fluid ounce of pastilles, because pastilles are about 40% air. That single ambiguity swings the structurant by more than half.

"One ounce of beeswax to one cup of oil" is the most repeated instruction in the salve world, and it resolves four different ways depending on how you read the ounce. This is not a nitpick: the readings span a soft ointment to a firm salve.

Why the mixed-unit problem matters
Take three widely published salve instructions. One says "1 oz beeswax (1/4 cup)". A quarter cup of pastilles is 35 g, which is 1.235 oz, so following the volume gives 23% more wax than following the weight. Another offers "roughly a heaping tablespoon" as a substitute for the ounce, when an ounce is actually a little over three level tablespoons, so that substitution delivers under half the intended wax. A third publishes both "1 part wax to 3 to 5 parts oil" and "a 1:8 ratio, 1 oz beeswax to 8 fluid ounces of oil" on the same page as if they were the same product, when by volume 1:4 is 14.0% wax and the ounce-per-cup version is 11.6%.
None of these are typos. They are the predictable result of measuring one ingredient by volume and another by weight, then describing the result as a ratio. A 0.01 g scale costs less than a set of measuring spoons and removes the problem entirely.
If you inherit a family recipe in cups and spoons, make it once exactly as written, weigh every ingredient as you add it, and record the percentages. From then on you have a formula that scales, and you never have to guess what the original author meant.

Why can the same recipe give two different balms?
Because most craft recipes measure oil by volume and wax by weight in the same sentence. Read "1 oz beeswax to 1 cup of oil" as an ounce by weight and you get 11.6% wax. Read it as a fluid ounce of pastilles and you get 7.5%. That is the difference between a firm salve and a soft one.
Why not just convert with the density of beeswax?
Because solid beeswax has a density near 0.96 to 0.98 g per cubic centimetre, but a jar of pastilles is roughly 40% air. Its bulk density is about 0.59 g per millilitre. Using the solid figure overestimates the wax mass by around 1.65 times.
How much does a tablespoon of beeswax pastilles weigh?
About 9 g level, and a cup about 140 g. That means one avoirdupois ounce of wax is a little over three level tablespoons, not the single heaping spoonful that some recipes suggest as an equivalent.
Is 1:1:1 wax to butter to oil a good lip balm?
Not really. By weight it is 33% wax, and measured in spoons it is about 24.5%. Both are far above the 5 to 12% beeswax that published industrial formulas use, and the result is closer to a beard wax than a lip balm.
Does it matter which oil I use for the conversion?
Barely. Common carrier oils sit between about 0.90 and 0.92 g per millilitre, so switching from olive to almond moves the final percentage by well under one point. Wax is where the ambiguity lives.
