Tattoo balm: a light unscented formula, and what does not belong on a fresh tattoo
A light fragrance-free tattoo balm in weight percent and grams, a richer maintenance version, and an honest account of what belongs on a fresh tattoo and what does not.
Tattoo aftercare is the one area of balm making where the formula is the least important part of the page. A fresh tattoo is a wound produced by thousands of needle passes through the epidermis into the upper dermis, and the instructions that matter come from the person who made it and from clinical guidance, not from a recipe site. What a balm can honestly claim is a role that begins later, and it is a real one.
A balm is a healed-tattoo product, not a day-one product. Follow your artist's aftercare while the skin is still open. Once it has closed, a light unscented balm at about 6 percent wax keeps colour looking saturated by slowing water loss and smoothing the surface. It does not prevent fading.
What a fresh tattoo actually is
The needle deposits pigment in the dermis, but to get there it has to breach the epidermis several thousand times per square centimetre. For the first two or three days the area behaves like a superficial abrasion: it weeps plasma, it is inflamed, and it has no intact barrier. Over roughly the next one to two weeks the epidermis re-forms and sheds, which is the familiar flaking stage. Dermal remodelling underneath continues for months. Those timings are typical ranges, not guarantees, and they vary with placement, size, technique and the person.
The consequence for a maker is that skin permeability differs completely at each stage. Intact stratum corneum lets very little through. An open or freshly closed tattoo does not, which changes the calculation for every optional ingredient in the pot. The underlying mechanism is in moisturisers and the skin barrier.
Signs that a tattoo needs medical attention rather than a balm: pain, redness or swelling that increases after about day three instead of settling; redness spreading outward from the tattoo or red streaks running from it; heat; yellow, green or foul-smelling discharge; a fever or feeling generally unwell; an area that reopens, blisters or ulcerates. Allergic reactions to ink can also appear weeks, months or years later as raised, itchy, scaly patches confined to one colour, most often red. None of these are formulation problems. See a doctor, and tell your artist afterwards.
Why heavy occlusion too early is discouraged
Occlusion itself is not the villain. Modern wound care is broadly in favour of a moist environment. The problems are specific to putting a thick, home-made, anhydrous film on a weeping surface.
First, quantity. A heavy layer over a wound still producing plasma holds that exudate against the skin, and prolonged wetness macerates tissue. A thin film does not; a glossy 1 mm layer does. Most complaints about heavy aftercare products are complaints about how much people apply.
Second, cleanliness. A balm is anhydrous, so its water activity is too low to support microbial growth, which is why it needs no preservative. That is not the same as sterile. Low water activity suspends growth, it does not kill, and spores and dried-down organisms persist in fats indefinitely. Dipping fingers into a tin and then touching an open wound is a contamination route that a sealed sterile dressing does not have. The full argument is in do balms need preservatives.
Third, authority. Artists give aftercare instructions partly because they are responsible for the result and usually for the free touch-up. Substituting an internet recipe for those instructions is a bad trade.
The petrolatum question, honestly
Tattoo forums have circulated two claims about petroleum jelly for decades: that it suffocates the skin, and that it pulls ink out. Neither survives scrutiny. Skin does not respire through its surface in any way that occlusion interferes with, and pigment sits in the dermis where an ointment cannot reach it. Ink loss during healing comes from pigment held in the epidermis being shed with the scab and the flakes, which is a consequence of how the tattoo was applied and how it was handled.
The evidence, such as it is, points the other way on barrier repair. Petrolatum applied to damaged stratum corneum accelerated barrier recovery rather than impeding it in the classic study on the question. What is fair to say is that the comparative evidence between aftercare products is thin, that petrolatum is very heavy and easy to over-apply, that it stains fabric, and that some people simply prefer a plant-based product. That is a preference argument, not a safety one, and it is set out properly in natural versus petroleum and in petrolatum and mineral oil.
Fragrance and essential oils on broken skin
This is the one place where a home formula can do real harm. Sensitisation, the process by which the immune system learns to react to a material, happens far more readily through damaged skin than intact skin, and occlusion increases how much of an applied material penetrates. A tattoo combines both, over a large surface area, applied repeatedly for two weeks. Fragrance materials are consistently among the highest-scoring allergens in patch-test series.
So the rule for a tattoo balm is simple: no fragrance, no essential oil, no botanical extract with a strong aromatic fraction, at any percentage, on healing skin. On a fully healed tattoo you may scent a maintenance balm at ordinary body-balm levels, 1 to 2 percent total essential oil for adults and 0.5 to 1 percent for older or sensitive skin, but there is still no benefit to it beyond smell. The formula: light unscented tattoo balm
Percentages are by weight and total exactly 100. The grams column is for a 120 g batch, which fills four 1 oz (30 mL) tins at 27 g each (108 g) with 12 g of overage, about 11 percent, for what stays in the jug and on the spatula.

The tocopherol level will look low to anyone used to craft recipes quoting 0.5 or 1 percent. Measured concentration optima for protecting an oil sit near 0.01 percent for alpha-tocopherol and around 0.03 percent for mixed tocopherols, above which alpha can flip pro-oxidant, so 0.1 percent is already generous. Higher levels are a skin-directed vitamin E claim, not oil protection.
- Sanitise the equipment. Wash, dry, then wipe contact surfaces with 70 percent alcohol and let it evaporate fully. This balm may touch recently healed skin, so start with a low count.
- Melt the hard phase. Beeswax and refined shea in a water bath, held at 75-80 C (167-176 F) for ten minutes. Beeswax melts at 61-65 C, but shea needs the margin: the beta clear point of its stearin is 41-43 C, so melting it until it merely looks liquid leaves seed crystals behind.
- Add the liquid oils. Jojoba, caprylic/capric triglyceride, high-oleic sunflower, meadowfoam and squalane. Return to 75 C (167 F) and stir until uniform.
- Cool to 55 C (131 F) off the heat, stirring slowly so you do not fold in air, then stir in the tocopherols.
- Pour at 60-65 C (140-149 F) to 27 g per 1 oz tin. Pouring hotter gives centre dips and tunnelling.
- Cool fast. Twenty minutes in the fridge, not the freezer. Below about 18 C the shea favours the unstable alpha form, which marches toward beta anyway.
- Cure 24 hours, then cap, date and label. The balm reads firmer on day two than on day one.
The richer maintenance version
For a healed tattoo in winter, on shins and forearms and anywhere the skin runs dry, the light formula is thin. This is a proper body balm with a tattoo in mind: more butter, more cling, still unscented by default. Grams are for a 240 g batch filling two 4 oz (120 mL) jars at 110 g, with 20 g overage.

Method is the same, except that the shea and cocoa butter together make crystal control the main risk. Hold at 75-80 C for a full ten minutes, pour at 60-65 C, and chill for twenty minutes. Slow bench cooling of this blend is the standard route to a gritty jar, as set out in shea butter.
How to adjust it
One change per batch, always rebalanced against the liquid oils so the total stays at 100.
- Thinner film, hot climate application: beeswax 6 to 5 and shea 10 to 7, adding the 4 points to caprylic/capric triglyceride. Below about 4 percent wax the balm slumps in a warm room.
- Firmer tin for a bag or pocket: beeswax 6 to 8, taking the 2 points from high-oleic sunflower. Or swap 1.5 points of beeswax for candelilla, which is harder at equal weight, and expect to test it.
- Vegan: replace the 6 percent beeswax with 4 percent candelilla and 2 percent extra shea. Candelilla melts at 68-73 C so raise the melt hold slightly. The 0.6 to 0.7x substitution factor is a workshop rule of thumb, not a measured constant, so make a test batch.
- Deeper apparent colour: add castor at 5 to 8 percent from the sunflower allowance. Castor is highly structuring as well as glossy, so the balm will read noticeably firmer at the same wax level.
- Scenting the maintenance version only: 1 percent total essential oil, added below 50 C, taken from the sunflower. Never in the healing-stage balm.
What a balm does for long-term colour
Three mechanisms, in descending order of how much they matter.
Occlusion. A hydrophobic film slows transepidermal water loss so the tissue underneath rehydrates from within. Hydrated stratum corneum is more pliable and less prone to the fine surface scaling that dulls a tattoo. The vocabulary is in occlusives, emollients and humectants.
Emolliency and optics. A dry skin surface is a field of lifted corneocyte edges that scatter light diffusely. Fill those gaps with oil and the surface reflects more specularly, so contrast rises and lines look sharper. Same reason a wet pavement looks darker than a dry one. Real, entirely superficial, and it lasts as long as the film does.
Sun protection, which a balm does not provide. Ultraviolet degradation of pigment is the main driver of long-term fading, and no oil or wax at these levels gives meaningful protection. An SPF claim requires a formulated, tested sunscreen, which in the United States is regulated as a drug rather than a cosmetic. Do not put an SPF number on a balm, and do not imply one. The boundary is in cosmetic versus drug claims. Cover the tattoo or use a proper broad-spectrum sunscreen on healed skin, and use neither on a healing one.

Where to start
Make the light formula, keep it unscented, and use it from the flaking stage onwards and then two or three times a week indefinitely. Judge it by whether you reach for it, because consistency does more for the tattoo than any ingredient in it. Read jojoba oil before you substitute the largest line in the formula: most of the reason this balm keeps for two years without smelling stale is that a quarter of it has no bis-allylic hydrogens to lose. And leave the first two weeks to your artist. That is the correct division of labour, not a hedge.
Frequently asked questions
Can I put balm on a brand new tattoo?
Follow the aftercare your artist gave you, and any clinical advice if the area is inflamed. A fresh tattoo is an open wound for the first several days, and a home-made, non-sterile, heavy balm is not the right dressing for one. Most balms are a product for the flaking stage onwards and for the healed tattoo after that.
Is petroleum jelly bad for tattoos?
Not inherently. Petrolatum does not draw ink out and it does not suffocate skin: the studied effect is that it accelerates barrier recovery rather than impeding it. The real objections are practical. It is heavy, it is easy to apply far too thickly over an exuding wound, and it stains bedding. Thin films, not thick ones.
Why no fragrance or essential oils?
Because sensitisation happens most readily on damaged skin, and a tattoo is damaged skin over a large area, often kept under an occlusive film that increases how much of any material gets in. Fragrance materials are among the most common contact allergens in patch-test data. There is no formulation upside that justifies the risk here.
Does a balm stop a tattoo fading?
No. Fading is mostly ultraviolet degradation of pigment plus slow macrophage turnover in the dermis, and no emollient touches either. What a balm does is optical and superficial: smooth, well-hydrated stratum corneum scatters less light, so lines read crisper and blacks look denser. Sun protection is a separate, tested product.
How much wax should a tattoo balm contain?
Six to nine percent. A tattoo balm has to spread in a thin film over a large area without dragging on tender skin, which rules out the 12 to 20 percent wax levels used in lip and heel products. Six percent gives a balm that melts on contact and can be spread almost to transparency.
Can I use the balm on a peeling tattoo?
Once the surface has closed and is flaking rather than weeping, a thin film of a bland unscented balm is reasonable and it reduces the tightness that makes people pick. Do not lift or pull the flakes. If any area is still open, wet or scabbed thickly, it is too early.
Does the balm need a preservative?
Not while it stays anhydrous. There is no free water for microbes to grow in, which is the basis of the ISO 29621 low-risk criteria. It is not sterile though: dormant organisms and spores survive low water activity. Use clean fingers or a spatula and keep water out of the tin.
