Calendula salve: getting real extract strength out of the petals, then setting it

Two calendula salves made to the same wax percentage can differ by a factor of five in how much calendula they actually contain, and nothing about the finished tin will tell you which is which. The wax stage is arithmetic anyone can copy. The infusion is where the product is made or wasted, and it is the part most recipes cover in a sentence.

Short answer

Infuse dried calendula petals at 1 part to 5 parts oil by weight, either at 40 C for 14 days or at 70 C for 4 hours. Strain and settle, then set 74 percent of that oil with 12 percent beeswax and 13.9 percent shea butter, plus 0.1 percent tocopherol. Pour 60 ml tins at 70 to 76 C and cure for a day.

The infusion is the formula

A salve is a structure: liquid oil held in a wax network. Change the herb and the structure does not notice. That means every decision that affects potency happens before the beeswax is weighed, and the wax level only decides whether the result is a soft scoop or a firm one.

The formula below runs the infused oil as the whole liquid phase, at 74 percent, and that is deliberate. The calendula ingredient page estimates the marker compounds, the faradiol monoesters, down the chain from flower to finished product: roughly 0.02 to 0.05 percent in a 1:5 infused oil, which lands a balm using 20 percent of that oil at something like 40 to 100 parts per million. Running the infusion at 74 percent multiplies that by close to four, to around 150 to 370 parts per million on the same assumptions. It is the largest single lever available, and it costs nothing but the discipline of infusing enough oil.

None of those numbers are measurements of your batch. Nobody sells calendula against a faradiol specification, there is no pharmacopoeial assay for it, and cultivar, plant part and harvest year swing the flower content several-fold. Treat the estimate as a scale, not a reading.

Dried flowers only, and the moisture number that matters

Fresh calendula heads are roughly 80 to 85 percent water, and the resinous receptacle at the base holds that water long after the petals feel crisp. Water under oil neither dissolves nor evaporates. It separates into droplets at the bottom of the jar under a lipid layer that keeps oxygen out, which is the environment that makes herb-in-oil preparations a microbiological hazard rather than merely a spoilage risk. Target below 10 percent residual moisture. In a dehydrator at 35 to 40 C, loose petals take 2 to 4 hours and whole heads 8 to 12; on a mesh rack in a warm, dark, moving airflow, allow 7 to 10 days in a single layer. Petals should shatter rather than fold and the receptacle should snap.

Try this

The bench test that beats guessing: weigh 20 g of dried material, put it back in the dehydrator at 40 C for two more hours and weigh again. A loss under about 1 percent means it was dry; a loss of 4 or 5 percent means you were about to infuse wet flowers. It is the only moisture check available without laboratory equipment.

1:5 by weight, and what the ratio actually buys

One part dried herb to five parts oil by weight is the working standard, and the phrase "by weight" is doing real work. Dried calendula petals are extraordinarily light: 60 g of loose ray florets occupies of the order of a litre. Any recipe that measures a cup of petals into a cup of oil is producing an unknown and unrepeatable strength, which is the main reason two home-made calendula salves rarely match.

Extraction into oil approaches a plateau. Once the oil has taken up what it will from a charge of herb, extending the time only oxidises the oil, which is why a second charge beats a longer steep every time. Choose the base oil for stability rather than romance: olive and high-oleic sunflower survive a warm infusion and keep for one to two years, while grapeseed and hemp are half spent before you finish the tin, as ranked in carrier oils compared. Buy ray florets rather than whole heads, because the triterpenoid content of the petals is commonly two to four times that of the whole head.

Two schedules: 40 C for a fortnight, or 70 C for four hours

Both reach the same plateau. They differ in what they cost you along the way.

The mechanism is worth understanding, because the obvious arithmetic gives the wrong answer. Reaction rates roughly double per 10 C, so 70 C runs something like eight to thirty times faster than 40 C; but the hot route lasts 4 hours against 336, so on total thermal dose the long warm route should be the worse one. It is not, for two reasons. Carotenoid degradation accelerates disproportionately above about 60 C, where thermal isomerisation and cleavage join simple oxidation. And oxygen supply differs: a closed jar with little headspace runs out of oxygen early, while an open, stirred bath replenishes it continuously.

The practical consequence is that most of the penalty is avoidable. Run the hot infusion in a covered vessel filled close to the top, stir sparingly, and hold 70 C rather than letting it drift to 90, and the oil comes out much closer to the warm-macerated version. Hold the tocopherol back until straining either way, because adding an antioxidant before four hours at 70 C mostly consumes it, as explained in vitamin E and antioxidants.

Note

What is lost to heat is the colour, not the constituent the herb is used for. The faradiol monoesters are triterpenoid esters and are markedly more stable to heat and light than the carotenoids in front of them. A hot-infused oil that looks a shade duller has lost pigment, not potency. This is the same fact that makes colour a useless quality control check, and it comes back below.

Straining, marc loss, and sizing the infusion for this batch

The formula below needs 222 g of strained infused oil. Work backwards. Spent herb retains roughly 15 to 25 percent of the oil you put in, so a charge of 60 g of dried petals in 300 g of oil returns something like 230 to 255 g strained, which covers the requirement with a little to spare. That is the arithmetic the infusion calculator does if you would rather not.

Strain through muslin and squeeze the cloth hard, because the squeezed fraction carries most of the colour. Stand the strained oil for 24 to 48 hours and decant off the top, leaving the fines behind. A distinct heavier layer at the bottom is water, not sediment, and that batch does not go into a tin. Add the tocopherol here and label the jar with the herb, the base oil, the ratio, the schedule and the date: without those five facts you cannot reproduce a good batch or diagnose a bad one, which is the whole argument for batch records.

The salve: 300 g, five 60 ml tins

All percentages are weight percent of the finished batch and total exactly 100. Three hundred grams fills five 60 ml tins at 55 g each, leaving 25 g of overage for what stays on the jug, the spatula and the thermometer.

The wax to liquid oil ratio here is 36:222, about 1:6.2, firmer than the traditional 1:8 salve rule set out in herbal salve. Two reasons. The shea is doing part of the structural work already, so the wax and the butter have to be counted together rather than separately. And a 60 ml tin is a thing people carry, which means it needs to hold a clean, level surface in a bag at 25 C rather than merely sit on a shelf. For a softer scoop in a cold house, take the beeswax to 10 percent and put the 2 points into the infused oil. For a firmer tin in a hot climate, go to 14 percent the same way. Two percentage points of wax is a noticeable step in either direction, and the diagnosis for overshooting is in balm too hard or too soft.

There is no preservative because there is no water. That holds only as long as the process stays dry: undried flowers, a damp tin or a wet finger all put water into a product that has no defence against it, which is the reasoning in do balms need preservatives.

Method, and why this one pours hotter than most tins

  1. Weigh cold. Infused oil, shea butter and beeswax into a heatproof jug on a scale reading to 0.1 g. Keep the tocopherol aside if you did not add it at straining.
  2. Melt and hold at 75 to 80 C. In a water bath. With shea butter present, hold 75 to 80 C (167 to 176 F) for five minutes after the last wax fleck vanishes, so every fat crystal is genuinely melted. Do not push past 85 C.
  3. Run a set test. Drop a teaspoon onto a saucer from the fridge, wait two minutes and press it. Too hard, stir in 5 to 10 g more infused oil; too soft, add 3 to 5 g more wax. Three minutes here saves the batch.
  4. Pour at 70 to 76 C. Into dry tins on a level tray, working straight down the row without pausing.
  5. Chill fast. Move the filled tins to a cold bench, a cool water bath or twenty minutes in the fridge. Not the freezer, which cracks the surface.
  6. Top up and cure. If a dip has formed in the centre, pour a thin second layer over it once the first has skinned. Leave uncovered until fully opaque, then cap and cure 24 to 48 hours before judging the texture.

Seventy to 76 C is deliberately hotter than the 60 to 68 C this site gives for tins generally, and the reason is the shea. At almost 14 percent, the risk that dominates is not a shrinkage dip but a slow drift down through the crystallisation range, which is exactly how shea grows the coarse stearic crystals that read as sand a week later. Pouring hot and chilling immediately drives the whole tin through that range quickly. The price is a deeper dip and sometimes a slightly rougher edge, both fixable with a top-up pour. If you drop the shea and run the salve at 86 percent infused oil with 14 percent wax, that reason disappears and you should pour at 62 to 68 C instead, as set out in pour temperatures. The grain mechanism itself is in grainy shea butter.

The orange: what it is, why it goes, and why it is not potency

The colour is carotenoid: principally lutein and zeaxanthin esters, with some beta-carotene and flavoxanthin. Those are the compounds that make a good infusion look like apricot jam, and they are also among the least stable things in the jar. They photo-oxidise, so a salve in a clear jar on a bright windowsill can visibly pale within weeks. The mechanism and the packaging response are covered in tinted balm colour fading; the short version is that the opaque tin specified above is already most of the answer, and the rest is a cupboard.

Three consequences follow, and they are the reason this section exists rather than being a note about appearance.

  • Fading is not spoilage. A salve that has gone from apricot to cream has lost pigment. Whether it has also gone rancid is a separate question with a separate test, and the test is smell, not colour. Crayon, putty or old nuts means the base oil has oxidised, and that is a reason to bin the tin.
  • Colour is not a strength reading. The faradiol esters are colourless. A pale oil from good petals can carry more of them than a vivid one from a cultivar bred for pigment, and an oil that has been coloured with annatto or paprika oleoresin carries none at all beyond what the flowers gave it.
  • Customers will read fade as failure. If you sell, say so on the label or in the listing before someone asks. A line explaining that the colour comes from natural pigments and lightens with time costs nothing and prevents the complaint.

What you may put on the label

Calendula sits closer to the medicines line than most cosmetic botanicals, because it genuinely has a regulatory position elsewhere. The European Medicines Agency's committee on herbal medicinal products has adopted a European Union herbal monograph for Calendula officinalis L., flos, on the traditional use basis. That monograph applies to registered medicinal products using named preparations. It does not apply to your macerate, and citing it for a cosmetic is citing a medicine's paperwork for a product that is not that medicine.

In the United States, wound care and first aid claims fall under the skin protectant monograph at 21 CFR part 347, and calendula is not a monograph active. In the EU and UK, a product presented as treating inflammation or aiding healing is a medicinal product by presentation and sits outside the cosmetics regulation entirely.

Careful

"With calendula infused oil", "for dry, rough-feeling skin", "comforting" and "rich and protective" are cosmetic. "Healing", "anti-inflammatory", "antiseptic", "repairs damaged skin", "for wounds", "for burns", "for nappy rash" and "for eczema" are not, whatever the herbal tradition says and whatever the trial literature reports for pharmaceutical preparations. The claim-by-claim treatment is in cosmetic versus drug claims, and where the evidence for a named condition actually stops is in balm for eczema evidence. Separately, calendula is an Asteraceae: anyone who reacts to ragweed, chamomile, arnica or feverfew may react to it, so patch test before general use and see arnica, comfrey and salve herbs for the family.

The honest limits, and the decision rule

What this page gives you is a reproducible process, not a guaranteed strength. The two schedules are controllable and repeatable; the flower going into them is not. Cultivar, plant part, harvest year and drying conditions move the triterpenoid content of the raw material several-fold, no supplier tests for it, and no home method can check it. Two batches made identically from different sacks of petals will differ, and the only defence is to buy petals rather than heads, from a supplier who states the harvest year, and to keep the ratio and the schedule constant so that at least one variable is pinned down.

The second limit is what the finished salve does. At an estimated 150 to 370 parts per million of the marker compounds it is a mild traditional preparation with a plausible mechanism behind it, several orders of magnitude below the concentrations at which isolated faradiol esters were assayed. It is an occlusive fat film with a botanical in it, and the film is doing most of the work you can feel.

So the decision rule. Use the 40 C fortnight if you want the best-looking oil and can spare the equipment, and the 70 C four hours in a covered vessel if you want the product this week, knowing that the difference between them is mostly pigment. Run the infused oil at the whole liquid phase rather than at 20 percent, because that is the one change that multiplies content rather than adjusting texture. And if you want a stronger product rather than a stronger colour, add a second charge of flowers to the same oil before you touch the wax.

Store capped, cool and dark, and scoop with clean dry fingers. A strong herbal aroma will mask early rancidity, so smell for crayon or old nuts rather than trusting the colour.

Why has my calendula salve lost its orange colour?

The orange comes from carotenoids, mainly lutein and zeaxanthin esters, and they photo-oxidise. In a clear container on a bright shelf they bleach within weeks. This is not spoilage and it is not a loss of the constituents calendula is used for, because the faradiol monoesters are colourless and far more stable. How much beeswax does a calendula salve need?

Twelve percent of the total gives a firm tin salve that holds a level surface in a bag, when it is paired with around 14 percent shea butter as in this formula. Without the butter, the traditional one part wax to eight parts oil, about 11 percent, is the right starting point. Move in 2 percent steps and test a spoonful on a cold saucer before pouring.

Can I say my calendula salve is healing or anti-inflammatory?

No. Those are medicinal claims, and making them takes the product out of cosmetics regulation in the EU and UK and turns it into an unapproved drug in the United States, where first aid and wound claims fall under a monograph that does not list calendula. The European traditional-use herbal monograph covers registered medicines using named preparations, not a home macerate. Cosmetic wording such as "with calendula infused oil, for dry, rough-feeling skin" is available and accurate.
