After sun balm: what an anhydrous product can honestly do once skin is hot and dry
An after sun balm at 5 percent wax on a high linoleic oil base, with a 60 ml tin, a 58 to 64 C pour, why aloe gel is absent and where the drug claim line falls.
Skin that has spent a day in the sun is hot, tight and short of water, and almost everything sold for it is a water based gel. This page sets out the anhydrous alternative: a soft balm at 5 percent wax on a linoleic rich oil base, what it can honestly do for that skin, and the exact point at which the wording on the label turns a cosmetic into a medicine.
Build it soft and light rather than rich: beeswax 5 percent, squalane 15, linoleic rich oils 60, dry esters 12. Melt at 70 to 75 C, pour a 60 ml tin at 58 to 64 C, fill weight 55 g. The polyunsaturated base limits it to roughly six months. It softens and slows water loss. It does not treat a burn.
What after sun skin is actually short of
Two things change in skin that has taken a lot of ultraviolet. It is warm, because the tissue has absorbed energy and blood flow to the surface has increased, and it loses water faster, because the barrier in the outermost layer has been disrupted. The second is the part a balm can address. Raised transepidermal water loss is a measurable quantity rather than a feeling, and it is why the skin reads as tight two hours after you come indoors and flakes four days later.
A balm is a lipid film. It slows evaporation from a barrier that is temporarily leaking, and it supplies fatty acids that the surface layers can use. That is the whole mechanism, and the three jobs a moisturising product can do are separated properly at occlusive, emollient, humectant. Nothing in a tin of wax and oil reverses ultraviolet damage, reduces erythema, or shortens the course of a burn. If your brief includes any of those, you are designing a drug and this is the wrong page.
The formulation problem specific to this product is that the usual answer to a leaking barrier is more occlusion, and here that answer is wrong. A heavy film on hot skin is what people describe as smothering. In truth a few micrometres of lipid does not change heat loss much, since most of that heat goes by radiation and convection from a surface the film barely insulates. But the perception is consistent enough to design around, and it points the formula in the opposite direction to a winter barrier balm: low wax, fast spreading oils, a thin application, and a finish that is gone from the fingertips inside a minute.
The claim line, before the formula
Sunburn is an injury. In the United Kingdom and the European Union, a product presented as treating or preventing a disease or injury falls under medicines law rather than the cosmetics regulation. In the United States, treating sunburn belongs to the over the counter drug monographs. The regulator reads presentation as a whole: the product name, the front of pack copy, the website, the photographs and the social media post, not just the ingredient list.

Two of those deserve expanding. Sun protection factor cannot be conferred on a product by putting oil in it. It is a number that comes out of a standardised test on human volunteers or an approved in vitro method, and the argument is set out in full at SPF in lip balm. And an anti-inflammatory claim is a drug claim even when the ingredient genuinely has that literature behind it, because the claim describes what the product does, not what a molecule does in a dish. Do not put this or anything else on blistered, weeping or broken skin, and do not aim it at a child with widespread burn. That is a clinical situation with fever and fluid loss attached, and a tin of oil has nothing to offer it. The limits of what this site can tell you are at the safety disclaimer.
The formula
All figures are weight percent of the total batch and add to exactly 100. The gram column is for a 250 g batch, which fills four 60 ml tins at 55 g with enough left in the jug to cover the losses.

The linoleic rich oils total 60 percent: sunflower 30, safflower 20, hemp 5, evening primrose 5. Everything else in the formula exists to make that 60 percent behave.
Why each number is what it is
Five percent beeswax is about the minimum that holds an oil phase together as a soft solid in a wide tin. Below roughly 4 percent the balm slumps in a hot car and oil separates on the surface. Above 8 percent you have a body balm, and it starts to feel like a film rather than an oil, which is the sensation this product is trying to avoid. Linoleic acid at 60 percent of the formula is the one substantive choice here. Linoleate is not merely an emollient: it is the acyl chain esterified to the ceramide species that organises the lamellar layers of the barrier, and skin cannot synthesise it. The classic evidence is that essential fatty acid deficiency produces scaly skin and raised water loss, and that topical linoleate rich oil corrects the scaling where topical oleate does not. On skin whose barrier has just been disrupted, that makes it a more defensible base than a high oleic one. Codex Alimentarius gives conventional sunflower oil a linoleic range of roughly 48 to 74 percent and high linoleic safflower roughly 68 to 83 percent, so the finished balm lands somewhere near 33 to 40 percent linoleic acid by weight depending on the batch of oil you bought. Squalane at 15 percent and coco-caprylate at 12 do the sensory work. Both spread fast and finish dry, and squalane is fully saturated with an iodine value near zero, so it adds stability rather than costing it, as set out at squalane. Together they are 27 percent of the formula and the reason this reads as a light balm. Cut them and put sunflower oil back in, and you get the same chemistry with a greasy afterfeel and a reader who says it feels hot.
Jojoba is a liquid wax ester rather than a triglyceride and is nearly immune to the oxidation that will eventually finish this product off. Evening primrose is the one arguable inclusion: it buys gamma linolenic acid at 8 to 10 percent of the oil, costs several times what sunflower costs, and is among the least stable materials you can put in a jar. Five percent is a deliberate compromise. Leaving it out and raising sunflower to 35 costs you very little.
Vegan version
Sunflower wax gels oil far more efficiently than beeswax, so the substitution is not one for one. Replace beeswax 5 with sunflower wax 2.5 and add the 2.5 points back to the sunflower oil. Expect a slightly firmer, cleaner break and less of the cushion that beeswax gives. Substitution factors for every plant wax are at vegan beeswax substitutes.
Why there is no aloe vera in it
Aloe vera gel is water. Fresh leaf gel and the commercial single strength liquid are both around 99 percent water, and stirring either into an oil and wax base does one of two things: it refuses to combine and drops out as a layer, or it disperses under high shear and then splits within days. Worse, you have introduced free water into a product with no preservative, and low water activity is the entire reason an anhydrous balm does not need one. The material sold as oil soluble aloe extract is a different thing again. It is aloe solids extracted into or dispersed in a carrier oil, often at a very low solids figure, and frequently without the polysaccharide fraction people associate with aloe. It will go into your oil phase happily. What it will not do is give you the cool wet feel of a gel, because that feel is water evaporating. Buy it if you want the ingredient on the label and you have read the supplier's solids figure. Do not buy it expecting gel behaviour.
The same logic rules out glycerin, panthenol, hyaluronic acid and every other humectant people reach for on dehydrated skin. In a base with no water, a humectant has no phase to live in: glycerin beads out above a few percent and panthenol separates as a syrup at the bottom of the tin. What is deliberately left out
No menthol, no camphor, no peppermint oil. The cooling from menthol is a receptor effect rather than a temperature change: it activates TRPM8 and the brain reads cold, while a thermometer on the skin reads what it read before. On intact skin that is a harmless illusion. On skin that is sunburnt and possibly abraded it is an irritant applied to a compromised barrier, and it removes the one useful signal the wearer has, which is the discomfort telling them to leave the area alone. No essential oils, which is stricter than the usual advice. A disrupted barrier absorbs more of what you put on it, sensitisation is more likely on damaged skin, and citrus oils carry furocoumarins that are phototoxic on exactly the skin you are aiming this at. If you want a scent on a sun exposed product, the honest answer is that this one should have none. Both points are covered at fragrance allergy and citrus photosensitivity.
No lidocaine, benzocaine, hydrocortisone or anything else from behind a pharmacy counter. Adding an active with a monograph makes your product a drug in every jurisdiction that has the concept, with all the registration and manufacturing consequences that follow.
Method, containers and the pour
- Weigh phase A into one jug. Wax first, then squalane, then the oils, taring between each. Use a scale reading to 0.01 g: bisabolol at 0.3 percent is 0.75 g on this batch.
- Melt at 70 to 75 C. A water bath, not direct heat. Beeswax is fully clear well below this, so the hold is about certainty rather than cooking the oils. Do not go above 80 C with a base this polyunsaturated.
- Cool below 55 C, then add phase B. Tocopherol, rosemary extract and bisabolol all lose something to prolonged heat. Stir until uniform.
- Pour at 58 to 64 C. Warm enough to flow flat across a wide tin, cool enough that the shrinkage dip stays shallow. Poured at 75 C you get a crater and often a hollow centre.
- Cool uncovered and level. Room temperature, undisturbed, lids off until the surface is firm. Do not use the fridge to speed this up: fast cooling on a low wax formula gives a matte, slightly rough top.
- Cap, then leave 24 hours before judging it. A 5 percent wax balm keeps firming for a day or more as the crystal network completes.
Sixty millilitres is the right size. A 60 ml aluminium screw tin fills at about 55 g using 0.92 g per millilitre as the working density of set balm, holds enough for several applications to shoulders and back, and survives a beach bag. The alternative is an LDPE squeeze tube: better hygiene, because sunburnt skin gets touched by hands that have been in sand and sea, and worse dosing, because a 5 percent wax balm is reluctant to leave a tube until it warms up. General melt and pour windows are at pour temperatures.
The fridge, and what cold does to it
People will put this in the fridge, because cold on hot skin feels better and because that is what they do with aloe gel. It is worth knowing what happens.
At 4 to 6 C the balm goes hard: not brittle, but firm enough that a fingertip lifts very little, so people compensate by digging and wreck the surface. Two or three minutes out of the fridge and it is workable again. Chilling harms nothing chemically, and it genuinely slows the oxidation that limits this formula.
The real risk of fridge storage is condensation. Open a cold tin in a humid bathroom and water condenses on the balm surface, which is exactly how free water gets into a product formulated to have none. If you store it cold, let the closed tin reach room temperature before opening it. The symptoms of water that got in anyway are at water contamination in balm.
Shelf life: this is a six month product
A base that is 60 percent linoleic rich oils, with hemp and evening primrose in it, is among the least stable things you can build. Oxidation rate scales with the number of bis-allylic positions in the blend, which is why linoleic acid oxidises roughly an order of magnitude faster than oleic, and linolenic faster again. The mechanism and the smell each stage produces are at rancidity and oxidation.
Practically: date it six months from the pour for a cool cupboard, and treat anything longer as optimistic unless you have tested the batch. The tocopherol and rosemary extract slow that clock, they do not stop it, and more tocopherol is not better, since above roughly 0.2 percent alpha tocopherol in an oil the protective effect flattens and can reverse. The honest limits
This product does one thing well: it puts a light, fast absorbing, linoleate rich lipid film on skin that is losing water faster than usual, without the sealed feel of a winter formula. That is a real job and it is a small one.
What it cannot do is cool. Anyone who wants the wet cold hit of a gel from the fridge will be disappointed every time, because that sensation is water evaporating and there is no water here. Sell it for the evening and the two days after, not for the first hour. It will not prevent peeling, will not shorten the redness, and should not be the product anyone reaches for on blistered skin. It is also short dated by construction, which makes it a poor fit for a range that has to sit in a box until next summer. If you need shelf life more than you need the linoleic argument, build the same structure on high oleic sunflower or safflower and take the trade.
Frequently asked questions
Can I put aloe vera gel in an after sun balm?
No. Aloe gel is around 99 percent water and an anhydrous balm has no phase to hold it, so it either sits as a separate layer or splits within days. It also introduces free water into a product that has no preservative. Oil soluble aloe extract will blend in, but it is aloe solids in a carrier oil and it does not give the cool wet feel of a gel.
Does an after sun balm treat sunburn?
No, and saying that it does turns a cosmetic into a medicine in the UK, the EU and the US. A balm slows water loss from a barrier that has been disrupted and softens flaking skin over the following days. It does not reduce redness, shorten the burn or repair ultraviolet damage. Blistered, weeping or extensive burn is a clinical matter rather than a formulation one.
Why does my after sun balm sting?
Two common reasons. The skin is abraded or broken, in which case almost anything stings, including plain oil. Or the formula contains a fragrance, essential oil, menthol or botanical extract that is mildly irritant on intact skin and strongly irritant on a damaged barrier. Strip the formula back to wax, squalane and plain oils and test it again on the same person.
Can I add menthol or peppermint oil for a cooling effect?
You can, but it is the wrong choice here. Menthol activates a cold receptor, so the skin feels cooler without actually being cooler, and it is an irritant on a barrier that is already compromised. It also masks the discomfort that tells someone to leave the area alone. Menthol and camphor both carry concentration caps and age limits that are worth checking before you use either.
How long does a high linoleic after sun balm keep?
Around six months from the pour, stored cool and dark. A base that is 60 percent linoleic rich oils oxidises quickly, because linoleic acid carries a reactive bis-allylic site, and hemp and evening primrose oil go faster still. Mixed tocopherols and rosemary extract slow it without stopping it. Swapping to high oleic oils roughly doubles the shelf life.
Should I keep it in the fridge?
You can, and cold storage does slow the oxidation that limits this formula. Expect two things. At fridge temperature the balm is firm enough that a fingertip lifts very little, so give it a few minutes out before use. And let the closed tin warm to room temperature before opening it, or humid air will condense water onto a product designed to contain none.
Is an oil based balm too heavy for skin that has been in the sun?
It depends entirely on how you build it. A 20 percent wax balm on heavy butters will feel like a seal on hot skin. A 5 percent wax balm with 27 percent fast spreading squalane and dry esters absorbs in under a minute and does not read as heavy. Dose matters as much as formula: a thin film, not a layer.
